I've been looking at the Alienware m9750 and it natively supports the ability to plug in front, middle and surround speakers directly to the laptop. I was wondering if 5793 and the 92xx model had this ability, hell what about the 2090?

Furthermore, I see that more advanced audio devices can be purchased in the drop down menus for all, however, will these devices be internal in the laptop or sticking out the smart bay like a PCMCIA device?

    Thanks for a speedy response.

"Advanced" devices would be modular (either expresscard or USB based), but the NP5793 and NP9262 both natively support front, middle, and surround speaker plugins. Occasionally, the Realtek settings have to be tweaked a bit, but they generally auto-detect the speakers.

The 2092 will only support 4 channel surround (front and rear speakers). I THINK it will still auto-detect, but I've not tested it.

Thanks for the information. So if I were to get the 5973, i shouldn't have to plug in any external audio device to use my logitech 5.1 speakers, I should be able to plug all three jacks into the laptop just like the m9750?

Uhm,no. There`s only one headphone jack, but the onboard system is 7.1 if I`m not mistaken. So you can hook them up,you just need to adapt them somehow.

Eleron - the line in and mic-in jacks also function as a center-speaker and surround-speaker output. Generally, the Realtek driver software auto-detects the output/input, but the Realtek software can also be manually set to output through the jacks.

So that`s why I could plug in the headphones into them and still hear something? although it sounded like crap. I wonder if that`s the case for the 5.1 system also.

:D It sounded like crap because you weren't hearing the "main" audio channel (front speakers). side and surround speakers generally have a lot less audio going to them, unless the movie/game has positional audio going off.

I have used the 5793 to run my 7.1 speakers (upmixed from 5.1) and it worked fine (jack autodetection simply asks you what you've plugged in if you use the line in and mic ports) and the audio quality was fine
