Does the 460m Run Cataclysm and Rift on highest settings? If i went with a 8130 how long would the 460m last me gaming wise (playing mostly MMOs)

    Hello xrawxtalentx,

I have an 8150 on order with a 460M, but haven't received one yet. So, I can't give you a first hand recount on this subject.

However, since most MMOs (except a few outliers such as FF series) try to cater to a larger portion of the public (so they can generate their monthly revenue), I'm quite certain the machine with an 460M will run MMOs for 2-3 years at the very least, albeit maybe not at the highest settings.

For current MMOs, I think it should be able to run at highest or near that setting (at least WoW). I must admit, I am not familiar with Rift's requirements though, so I'm not sure on that. :(

Right now for RIFT using my old 8700M GT card I have it set to Low Quality Render and am pulling 45-60 FPS. When I turn off Low Quality and put it on Medium it runs 13-24 FPS. Needless to say im running in Low Quality Render mode... which still looks great but I know im missing out. Also for WOW I used to run everything at the Highest Settings and had no problems.. since Cata Released my machine is running everything different, some aspects are still high but now I have low and mediums with no option to even try for higher graphics (they grey it out on the sliders)

^ Exactly. I had the GTX 280m, few leagues below the 460m and I was already running WoW on highest settings, although not so smooth in raid instances, still playable though. I had a fair share of Lord of the Rings Online too, and that too ran partly ultra-high settings, and that was even more taxing than WoW.

I would expect the 460m to be a finer GPU than the 280m.

Anyone with this card and these games? please!

The reason im asking this is because im torn between going with the 8130 or the 8150, its a couple hundred dollar difference for the setup i want. If i go with the 8130 i can order now, if i go with the 8150 i think i should be able to order within a month or so.

The short answer is that the 460m runs fine with warcraft (everything maxed out), and should be fine with rift.

wait a bit, then see if you can add a 6970m :D shouldn't be near as much as the 485 with similar performance. wish i had the time to wait for one, but i no longer do

The 6970 is the new ATi graphics card stated to come out soon (with an ETA anywhere from ~1-2 months). It seems this card will perform just under the 485 while being quite a bit cheaper (~$200 for the upgrade).

The prices and ETA is not set in stone, but we're all hoping...

I wish I had the time to wait for this card to come out, but my old laptop died about a month ago. I'm sitting on a loaner laptop from my friend, so I can't really wait any longer too. :(

I already asked him for a favor to loan me his 5 yr old macbook, so I can wait for these SB lappys, lol.

I have the 8130 and it can run Crysis on all high settings with 2x anti-aliasing at 50+ fps according to Fraps. It was also playable at ultra settings. Unless Rift is the new video card killer then I have a hard time believing the 8130 wouldn't play it fine on highest settings. If there were performance issues in Rift then I'd suspect it's more related to server lag or bandwidth issues or Hard Drive read times.

    Hi guys,

What's the difference between the plastic finish on the 8130 vs the rubberized finish on the 8150? Like what does the plastic finish "feel" like compared to the rubberized surface on 8150? I like it when my laptop 'feels' smooth since my hands do get sweaty and if the surface is "rubberized"--which seems to imply more friction on the surface, it doesn't feel comfortable.--anyone who has the np8130 can tell me what the laptop surface feel's like?

The rubberized finish, with its friction, holds your wrists in place when you're typing, and it is somewhat more comfortable than the plastic in the Macbook I have.

I can't explain these in words, as it is a matter of personal taste.. If you were to move around your wrists, I'd say it would be unpleasant, but it's definitely not a factor you would consider against the NP8150, as it has its gives and takes.

But the plastic is just a smooth surface right? Since even if i get the NP8150, I will still get same specs, so I might get the 8130 anyway, since it is cheaper.

If you're not planning on upgrading to the 485m ever then yeah, just get the 8130.

The 460 can handle WoW on ultra with vsync off and fullscreen (windowed). It'll get 110FPS in AV and 60-70FPS in raids with updated drivers.

As for Rift, I expect it to be similar.

Rift is a different engine than WoW so it's not going to be directly comparable

And FWIW, if you are willing to wait a bit, wait for the 6970M... benches peg it at only 5% or so slower than the GTX 485M and if the rumors are correct, it won't cost anywhere near the 485M's pricing
