Hi guys, first time poster but i've been lurking for a while.. I'm looking to buy a 15 inch gaming laptop, and the np8662 and m15x fit the bill.. but I know the m15x is due for a refresh so I'm mainly looking at the sager HOWEVER

there seems to be a HDD heat issue that almost every 8662 user experiences... is it that bad and debilitating? I see tons of posts regarding this issue and I wonder if I should stay away completely.. I can't afford to get an SSD, and this laptop looks great apart from this issue...

what I'm asking is.. is it worth getting regardless of the horrible HDD heat problems?

    Thanks.

It is still worth getting and you can do things to lower the hard disk temperatures. I used to get idle temperatures of 50-55C and 60-62C under load.

Both idle and load temperatures dropped by 10C after I installed the Intel Matrix drivers and for other people, they got a 5C drop. My HDD now idles at 40-42C and under load does not go past 50C (so far in testing).

I recommend that you get a 320-500GB Seagate Momentus 7200.4 RPM drive, you disable indexing and make sure the drive is defragged. I also recommend you get a Zalman NC2000 cooler which although not a necessity, is definitely highly recommended.

This laptop is the best and most powerful 15'' I have ever owned, the build quality is solid, the style is low key and professional, the keyboard is responsive, it runs perfectly with Windows 7 and even recent games can be played on high settings, for example Batman Arkham Asylum (with Physx enabled can be very demanding), Ghost Busters, Prototype, GTA IV (I have a Q9000), Red Alert 3 etc.

    I recommend the NP8662 without a doubt.

For an even cooler system, I plan to test out some of those little VGA RAM cooling heatsinks made of copper on the GPU/CPU.

alright, thanks. I was really tempted by the m15x even though its a bit outdated, but I guess I could try all those fixes once I get the 8662. Is there a chance I WON'T encounter any HDD heat issues?

firstly i would rather have a hot running laptop over the nightmare m15x any day.

there might be quite a lot of posts about heat but what youve got to remember is people that are happy with their temps dont come to forums that are for techy help and the happy campers outnumber the not happy by a long shot. also as this is a worldwide forum the ambient temperature in various parts of the world will also have a big effect on heat issues as well.

imo my nexus/m860tu/8662 is a beast of a 15" and the best laptop ive ever owned.

as Laptopnut mentioned you can add software like the intel matrix that brings temps down by 5-10c and also a cooler helps a lot as well even though i dont use one and my temps are a steady 50c doing general surfing and 53c on load after intensive gaming.

after the reports ive seen seagate seems to have slightly more heat problems than the western digital black which im using.

go for it, you will not be dissapointed. where would you be ordering it from if you decide to go for it nyczlegacy.

As for the HDD heat issue - I was not really concerned about it till I started to read about it here haha.

I have installed intel matrix driver and made few small holes at the bottom of laptop to allow some airflow to/from HDD as there were none.

Running hard disk sentinel to monitor the temps - which averages daily @ 46-47, running defrag or other hard drive intense work can reach 59-60. Regural notebook usage, playing mp3 and such - temps are about 48-52. Gaming doesn't stress the HDD as much as defrag and similiar and temp is usually in the fifties.

On the Seagate website it states the Seagate momentus 7200.3 max operating temp is 60C. So I should be fine - yet running close to this temp at times makes me feel uneasy
