    Hi,

This is my first post but I have been lurking and learning from the forums for a while. This was the reason I choose to buy a Sager in the first place.

Anyway, I just wanted to ask how high is the operating temperatures on you Sager np8690 with i7 procs?

I just received my np8690 yesterday and almost finished setting up last night. I left the CPUID HwMonitor run in the background so I can see the temps while working. This morning I just noticed that the max temp on the proc was set at 78C degrees. I only left it to run windows update that night.

Call me paranoid, I was just concerned that I might have gotten one of those units with a little amount of IC Diamond 7 Therm Paste (I added this option as I was expecting the i7 to be a bit hotter). On the bright side the unit I received now has the i7-740QM instead of the i7-720QM I originally ordered. =)

That is higher than I would want. Something is not right?

for me the CPU temp idles at around 40-50C, and reaches a max of 78C on prime95 when all cores are used at 100%. I doubt you have any problem, fact is you left it overnight, you have no idea what was running in the night, could be some routine anti-virus scan you are doing or something that is using the CPU at 100%.

If you want to confirm if there is any problem with your cooling system, just do a prime95 bench and see how high it gets to.

Check to see if the notorious CPU vent sticker is still on the inside of the backplate as always. That temp is fine although my temps never go beyond 72 - 73C during gaming but that depends on your ambient too. Before I removed the sticker temps would hit 82C.

I bet you still have that sticker... I had the same problem, CPU temp was 78°C during games, now it's 67°C. Even when it was about 30°C, that's why I didnt bother to replace the themal paste. Whatever mySN applied, it seems to do the job.

I agree that the CPU sticker may still be intact. Try removing it first then kindly post your temps so we can comment on what could be causing your observed temperatures.

I should chime in here - after seeing so many people reporting lower temps after yanking that sticker, we got curious and asked Sager about it - specifically why they were leaving it on if temperatures improved so much without it (Sager is all about controlling heat as much as possible, so it seemed odd that they would leave anything that made the system run hotter).

Sager tells us that the sticker is actually used to help direct airflow, and that with it gone, less air may be getting to other components, meaning the net benefit of removing the sticker may not actually be there - it lowers the CPU temp a few degrees, but it may be raising temperature's elsewhere as a consequence.

All that said, as everyone else has mentioned, 78C is not a bad temperature, by any means, and with as much as Windows does while idle, there's no telling how much load the processor actually had while you thought it was just installing updates.

You'll see a huge variance in reported temperatures, because they depend as much on environment and usage as they do the computer's cooling assembly, but 78C is perfectly safe. Even up into the mid-90s, your CPU is perfectly safe, and it is designed to shut itself off before it hits critical temperatures.

So does Sager put the sticker there, or is it designed like that from Clevo? If Clevo doesn't put the sticker on, then I'd be more inclined to take it off, since they are the ODM.

As far as I know, Clevo puts the sticker there, and Sager believes it a good idea to keep it there, if that helps any :)

    It does, thanks.

Although now I'm torn on whether or not I want to remove the sticker, if I end up buying the NP8690.

I'd suggest just monitoring your temps for a while before making the decision to remove it or not. You may be perfectly happy with your temp readout, anyway :).

Some resellers remove the sticker themselves before shipping out their systems. I am very sure that they wouldn't do that if they expected it to cause any issues, particularly since they have 2 year warranties on them.

Some have a theory that the sticker was kept on the 15'' models but removed from the 17'' models so there would be a bigger difference in temperatures between the two leading you to believe that the 17'' model ran a lot cooler (potential better CPU performance).

Also bare in mind that leaving the sticker on could limit the potential of your CPU's performance. With regards to removing the sticker only reducing temps by a few C. I wouldn't call a 10C reduction in CPU temps under load a small amount.

Not removing the sticker to improve airflow in other component is a lame excuse I would say, I doubt Sager even confirmed with Clevo why the sticker is there in the first place, and probably read up the forum HERE, and read some possibility of it improving airflow and went with that excuse. Because what are the "other components"? The only thing in between the CPU and GPU fan is... nothing? Except for the ram further on top which I'm not sure the air will even reach, even given the benefit of doubt that the air will reach the ram, if MBP/Envy could have their ram in that tight chasis without fan cooling, why do Clevo need to do so?

And yes, it's best to keep your CPU cool, preferably below 72C, not for safety, but for performance, because the turbo multiplier drops at around 72C.

This sticker is absolutely rubbish. I got mine with my Nexoc attached, they had used the notebook before with the sticker and told me to keep it.
Despite this advise, it had to move from a clean laptop to a dirty trash bin.
Right now, my CPU idles at 40C with 18W avg, max 75C after hours of gaming.

Thanks for the reply guys. I have been monitoring the temps for a while highest I got yesterday was 84C. But I believe it was just for a while. I have finished setting up my system.

I'm now using my old cooler. Temps hasn't been above 64C today. I will try to see that particular sticker and check if I really need to remove it.

    Thanks again! =)

If you are worried, there is nothing stopping you from keeping the sticker somewhere safe just in case you (are crazy enough) want to put it back on. Some also removed the foam on the GPU side.

I am sure your temps will drop noticeable, yours 45W CPUs themps are higher than mine 55W.

Is there any reason to remove the foam? It does not inhibit the airflow and prevents the notebook from rattling when moved?
