    1) Is the 5790 too much to move around in college? Like from dorm to library or to classroom? I have always used a 17 inch or bigger screen with my desktop, so I originally just completely ruled out the 2090. Now I'm having second thoughts!

    2) Where is the fingerprint reader on the 5790? I really want this device but I need my laptop before mid august (college starts). I guess I could buy it without, but it would really suck to buy something costing $3,000 and not get what you want... so I could almost wait for it to be available, but I cant wait till September.

Anyone care to share some wisdom?
    Thanks!

A 17" is pretty hard to lug around, a lot of people would agree with me in that if you plan to take a laptop to class regularly, a 17" isn't the best choice, but if you plan to keep it on your desk, then 17" would be acceptable.

Keep in mind that a laptop is portable and a desktop is not, a 17" desktop screen might be fine, but a 17" laptop is something people take around with them and offers portable computing.

There are delays on the 5790's fingerprint reader, the NP2090 does have a fingerprint reader however, if that interests you.

Its going to be a complete desktop replacement (obviously). It doesn't seem like a 17inch is going to be that BIG of a deal, maybe a little extra weight, but I'm not a small fry. Is it completely out of line to bring it to class often or will everyone have dinky 13 to 15 inch screens?

It's a matter of convenience, I'm sure there's no silly rule in your classroom that prohibits 17"s. It's just that it might be problematic for portability and weight wise, along with limited desk space, but if that's not a problem, then by all means get a 17".

Well, I personally wouldn't want a 17" for college. Most college students will probably have 13-15" laptops.

The NP5790 is sweet. At 8 lbs. and less than 2" in thickness it's very do-able in terms of portability. 17" screen is the ideal real estate, in my opinion. Perfect marriage of gaming and portability.

i got the 15.4" the 2090 and i think that its pretty big..
all my friend have 15 and less and they all say its a pain in the a** to carry around..
    so its all your choice..
carrying around 8 pounds around campus have fun..

depending on the campus you could walk like 2 miles+ depending on where you go to school..

I carried around 15"/15.4" machines for years before getting my 12" ThinkPad. I never found them easy to carry around, no matter what bag I had. I can't find myself recommending a screen that large to anyone with daily travel needs. A 17" is definitely too large.

Unfortunately you are most likely stuck with a 15.4" if you want to game. A 15.4" is most definitely more portable than a 17" but still not easy to travel with in my opinion.

True... I feel the same way when I carry my 15.4" around the campus. I thought there used to be a few Asus 14" ones where they offer the same gpu that was in 15.4"...

Aww, is 8 lbs. TOO heavy for ya? Young'uns these days! They're such wimpy wooses! Would I be revealing my age if I tell y'all that the first portable computer I had was the 34 lbs. Compaq Portable entrusted to me by my boss at Dow Chemical.

At 34 lbs. there was nothing lap fitting about it. That thing was a monster! Lugging it around from airport to airport, to and fro from work to home, was quite a work out! It had an 8086 with a math co-processor. Seems ancient now, doesn't it?

    Thanks for the cookie.

I take it back. It had an 8088 with a math co-processor. But I vividly remember it being a 30+ lbs. behemoth.

I think it's the AC adaper (which seems pretty big from the video/pictures) is pretty big. I also think that the 5790, is bigger than most 17" consumer/mainstream laptops.

Huh? Man, it was over 20 years ago...one tends to not remember the fine details between 8086 vs. 8088. I believe the math co-processor was the 8087. I think that oldcomputer.net has it wrong. That thing was definitely a 30+ lbs. behemoth. I'm pretty certain of it.

Oldcomputers.net has it wrong I believe. According to the old-computer.com museum,

    http://www.old-computers.com/museum/computer.asp?c=547

the first generation Compaq Portable PC was indeed a 30+lbs. behemoth. Fresh out of chemical engineering school, I lugged that thing around for several years at my first job until the 286 series came out. My shoulders remember it well.

if your not a small fry you probably wouldnt notice the weight, and if you prefer a larger screen, by all means you should get it. I carry a 50lb ;) backpack around school all day, but by all means, im not a small man.

Good news and bad news for you. :) :(

    :) The Good News: :)
The 5790 is now being made available with a fingerprint reader embedded.
    http://www.xoticpc.com/product_info.php?products_id=2023

    :( The Bad News: :(
If you want the 8700 graphics card, or the white trim (oooh... looks nice) then you'd have to wait until mid-August for it to come out.
Also the 8lbs would probably be a pain to carry around every day.

(I have an old Dell Inspiron 8000 -weighing 9 lbs- and it was a pain to carry around. Of course I used a single strap bag that came with it. The backpacks of today make the weight more manageable, or so I hear  ).

If you're going to be carrying around books and other school supplies then the 8lbs laptop might be going a little to far. If you're not going to take it every day (and to every class) it might be tolerable. Do you plan to take it to class everyday? :p

Another question I feel is worth asking is: Do you really need it your first day of school? (Or your first week for that matter?)

Even if you do need it for classes you can probably get through the first week (or two) without it, and be sure you get a notebook you are confident and happy with owning. Most classes don't ramp up until the second or third week, and if you have computer related class you should be able to make due with a flash drive, and the class/lab computers until your notebook arrives.

Let us know what you decide and why. I'm debating between the 2090/5790/C90s myself. ;)

Yup, I'm buying a 5790 tomorrow. Its the best deal for the hardware you get. I really dont think I will need a laptop at every class. And if I find I do, I'll get a backpack for it and it will be no prob. Its not that heavy to me. I know I'll enjoy that 17inch workspace and movies/games will be great!

I dont want the 8700, the 7950 seems much better. I have the option of upgrading to a DX10 card if I really feel its necessary (I'll get a 8800+).

If you can wait it out until around november or so, it's rumored that the 8800 series will be released for notebooks. rumor mills, take it for what it's worth. but if you need a lappie now, jump on it. sager's next shipment includes the integrated fingerprint reader, yay! for the classy white trim, ETA is mid-August. the clevo 570RU/sager NP5790 is the best bang for the bucks out there.

oh how i wish they would offer a lighter version (under 9 lbs) of the clevo 901C/sager 9260 with SLI GPU's and dual HD's.

Heh, I don't see how they can make a laptop that powerful smaller or lighter.

That's for people who don't mind weight and want all performance in a laptop. :)

I like the 9260's performance, who doesn't? Daggum, it IS the MOST POWERFUL NOTEBOOK ON EARTH! Makes me salivate every time I read the reviews on it. Holy cow, broke the 10k barrier on 3DMark06!!! But it's a big ol' 12lbs. box that is portability prohibitive. Beauty's in the eye of the beholder but it looks pretty fugly to me. Do we really need 3 HD's in a notebook? I would be happy with just 2.
