So I should get my P170 shipped to me soon and it'll have a 6990m. I have heard some say that it is extremely loud and hot. Is this an accurate statement? Also this is just a general gaming questions. Most laptops seem to reach 70-80c easily... This seems like it would burn you if its even on you. Can this cause injury?
My next question is what performance I should expect from this laptop. Will I be able to connect this computer to my 32" TV and play battlefield 3 or other games on Ultra settings with atleast 45+ FPS? Will this thing compete against desktops in performance? I just want to know what I can expect from this machine as it is a pretty valuable investment.

Loud and hot are up to your definitions of both. It's not much louder than a whisper at idle/light browsing. However, gaming will cause the fans to ramp up and it will get to be a bit louder. There are a ton of reviews on this model in the Owner's lounge index if you want owner opinions:

As for your TV, if it's a 1080p model as most are, then performance should be identical to playing on your machine. I'm not sure how BF3 will run as it's still not released, but MrMysterious included a good link with benchmarks.

The 6990m competes directly with the desktop 6870 (with slightly slower clocks), which puts it around mainstream levels of desktop cards. A desktop is still going to offer much faster cards at lower prices though. It's really an apples to oranges comparison as you have so much less space/power/cooling to work with in a portable notebook :)

So will I max games out easily? What fps?
I was looking for more of reviews with the 6990m not just the p170

This is correct, it isn't as if they are affiliated with any one of the company and hence the main goal of the review is to review the product the way a consumer would use it.

And even if the laptop is at 80C internally, the temperature of the exterior is far lower. :)

I don't think putting a +90c laptop while gaming on your lap is the greatest idea, I'm not sure if you're a man, but putting hot things on your testicles is pretty bad for you, not making a joke here :)
If you really need to put a laptop on your lap while gaming invest in something like this...

So which video card results in the lowest testicle temp - 580M or the 6990?

Is there a review for that one?
