    Questions about the Clevo P270WM

    Heya,

So I'm considering upgrading from my MacBook Pro pretty soon and I've been eying the P270WM. Looks like it's fairly recent, given that I can only find a few resellers...

    Malibal

    OriginPC

Anyway, first question: anyone have experience ordering from OriginPC? I've seen a lot about Malibal around here, and it seems very positive, but I can't dig up anything on Origin. I'll probably be going with Malibal as their prices are a tad cheaper and they have faster shipping dates, but Origin is tempting because they offer 3D displays. Any other resellers to look into?

Second, how locked-down is the BIOS, on average? I ask, because I'd like to be able to over/under clock the CPU every once in a while. Mostly underclocking to get a bit better battery life. I work in web development so CPU horsepower is less important than battery life, on average (NOTE: I'm getting a high-end laptop for work AND gaming/other things that would benefit from the power). Listed battery life puts it around one hour, but I'd like to be able to get a bit more than that... Spoiled by my MBP's 2-4 hours on average.

Third, I notice the laptop doesn't have a DisplayPort/MiniDP on it, only DVI and HDMI. Coming from my MBP, I am using MiniDP to connect to my Dell U2711b (2560x1440). My research has shown that Dual-Link DVI will work for this, but I'd just like a bit of confirmation as I've never used DL-DVI before.

Fourth, I know they list the GPUs as "user-upgradeable" but are the CPUs as well? Since they're normal desktop CPUs I'd like to think I'd be able to upgrade it a bit further down the road instead of having to get a completely new laptop. I build desktop PCs and have done repairs/upgrades on laptops before, so I'm comfortable with working on it and (possibly) voiding my warranty, I'm just wondering if it's even possible.

    Anyways, thanks for any info.

The CPU is upgradeable as well, as long as you use a Socket 2011 chip... which I think there are only about 3, currently available.

Mythlogic sells these as well Nyx 7212, which is what I've ordered.

    Hey

Just to let you know, that the 3D screen Origin lists has the extended lead time, that we'll all get in a few months, we just choose not to list it until its at least close, or we at least have a decent date =) Rather than "soon"

Also, the P270WM does have a display port, (Full size) in addition to the HDMI/DVI on it, so you should be good

For the BIOS OC'ing, you have to use the XTU software in windows to OC, there aren't really any options in the BIOS to OC, which is unlike the AW machines where you do it all via BIOS. The XTU software just changes some hidden knobs in the BIOS for you

Finally yea, the CPU is upgradable. And if you get a laptop from us and you upgrade the CPU, you won't void the warranty on the rest of it, unless you set it on fire OC'ing, then its yours :p

And yes we do sell those laptops also :)

Ah, that makes sense. Was wondering why it increased the lead time so much.

I noticed you only had one glossy option for the screen, will you be offering a matte screen? I love the quality of glossy displays but the glare has been a huge pain on too many occasions :/

Great to hear! I've been mostly going by the (I think) X7200 spec sheet since most places don't even have an about page up yet for it (Malibal just goes right to the configuration page).

I figured it'd be a utility OC or something like that, which is fine by me. I don't plan to do any crazy OCs on a laptop, just minor stuff.

Awesome. Good to know you have a lenient warranty about that too.

Indeed you do. I definitely like your parts selection. I'll be adding you guys to the list of places to get my laptop from. Thanks for the info :D

Yes, you must pay customs and all applicable fees.

Legitimate businesses here will not.. (should not..) mark the item as gift/used to prevent fees as it is fraud.

You may be better off buying from a reseller in EU to prevent import fees.
