I've only understood bits and pieces of what people have posted on this forum. Granted, it's because I only read about half of what's posted, but it's left me wondering about several things.
-- The 8700M is CONFIRMED or NOT CONFIRMED for upgrade? And why wouldn't it be? If it's MXM-IV/HE wouldn't it just pop right in with some unscrewing and possibly ungluing?
-- Penryn IS or IS NOT supported with the P Socket (assuming that's the socket it has; I believe Gophn said that)?
-- This IS or IS NOT an awesome notebook? I've only heard that it is awesome, but people on these forums seem quite one-sided. (Hint: there's a correct answer to this question, and it's the first choice.)
So, to sum up, is this a hardcore future-proof notebook? I mean, if you can put in an 8 series, possibly even a 9 series, along with a Penryn processor, that's an entirely new notebook with an old look. The reason I'm asking is that it doesn't seem right at all. It's more like a desktop than a classic notebook.
Thanks in advance!

Well, considering that the M570RU is available to buy with an 8700GT, it's pretty much as confirmed as it's going to get. Whether or not there will be 256-bit 8m cards available is entirely up to nVidia, however I suspect that their will be. I do not think that it has been confirmed either way for Penryn on the 965 mobo, though I suspect that it won't happen, personally. However, all in all this is an extremely upgradeable notebook, though not quite so much so as the true desktop replacement, the Clevo D900c. However, considering it's lighter weight, it's an awesome choice in the 17" gaming sector.

" For the Clevo M570RU (Sager NP5790), its definitely one of the most advanced gaming notebooks available... with future proofing written all over it:
- Santa Rosa platform
- Penryn ready.... Socket P
- up to 4GB DDR2
- interchangeable and standardized MXM-HE(IV) .... 3 cards available for it by Fall (7950GTX, 8700M GT, Quadro 3500M)
... and the amazing 8800M shold make its debut by Winter.
Only the D900C is the other notebook with this MXM slot... it can support MXM-II, III, and HE.... thats just 1337 !!!"
Pretty sure Gophn said that a few days ago... -

yeap, I read that too, gophn definitely wrote that.
-
yea too bad no info is released on the 8800 and its compatibility
-
Yeah, Gophn wrote that, but where are his sources? It's possible that he's wrong. And given by people not really hearing anything from anywhere else... I fear that he is
-
Nope, I just confirmed for myself that Penryn will be available on the Socket-P.

Hopefully we can find m88's for sale individually by the time that its worth it to upgrade to one. Or two, in my case. But anyway, those things ain't gonna be cheap when they come out, by any means.
-
I really like the 9260. Too bad it wasn't available (or announced) when I bought my 5760...I would have waited and spent the extra pennys for SLi 7950s.
-
Yeah, Gophn is wonderfully optimistic isn't he? Donald had to convince him that the Q6600 wasn't going to work in the D900C in the "official statement" thread. I was disappointed too.
But, even if this notebook isn't as upgradable as Gophn says, I'm liking it very much right now. I recommend it very highly in fact. Still, I hope it accepts an 8800m come this December and maybe a quad-core version of Penryn in 2008.
Anyone know what is up with the BIOS though? Whenever I plug in a USB harddrive it gets added to the boot order. It is bad for security and it makes the computer take longer to start booting. I'd really like this behavior to change. -
odin, yay! Thanks!
And I'm wondering more about 9 series. 8 series isn't all that great. The 8950mGTX is probably gonna be about 1.5 times better than a Go 7950GTX? Not worth the price, to be honest. Whereas maybe a 9700M would be better than an 8950. Yum.
And isn't nVidia planning to make all future graphics cards MXM? I remember someone saying that. -
Agent CoolBlue Notebook Deity NBR Reviewer
you're jumping too far ahead into the future now...lol.
-
No... I read somewhere about nVidia planning to bring back MXM. I just can't remember which thread it was in.
Also, I was seriously thinking of getting the Clevo 900 somethingorother, but I realized that I still wanted to save some portability and battery life. This thing is timed at 1.5 hours battery with 50% brightness. Would that be a lot considering its components? And will Penryn and/or newer GPUs which are more efficient change this or not, so I could have more battery? -

the 900c is a beast...but I don't think it would be 1.5 hours if you're running multiple hard drives along with multiple GPUs, the NP5790 is estimated at around 1.5 hours.
-
I meant the NP5790 has 1.5 hours, sorry.
So, I still don't get it. Penryn is confirmed. MXM to 8700GT is confirmed, past that it's unclear (as for why it's unclear, I don't understand). -

be patient my friend...we'll find out eventually.

This is what it says on the MXM Upgrade thing:
"2. State of MXM
MXM has always been a bit of a mixed bag. Some good, some bad and some "what the hell?" Some ODM's are leaving the scene, some are increasing their presence and some... erh...
Bottom line: MXM will be supported on DX10."
And I'm trying to be patient. But how can I be? I'm too excited! -
Double post, so sue me.
"I have lost track of how many times I had to explain that Clevo does not use MXM. That they use a mezanine card that has nothing to do with MXM... Only to see they now push " MXM Type IV" I don' know what this is. Neither does my source at nVidia. So what is it then? If I had to guess they just baptized their mezanine cards "Type IV" to make it sound more sexy. They were able to comfirm there is no compatibility between IV and the others. I have absolutely no idea what to make of this.."

that is an extremely old post.
I just went over this here:

Penryn will be available on socket-p
Dont get a 8700m, its 20%-30% slower than the 7950GTX. You'll be able to upgrade when better cards are released.
It is an awesome notebook, and for the price, its perfect!
I'm a computer engineering student and I'm very well informed about computers... I just bought a M570ru, waiting for it to be shipped (supposed to be shipped this week!) -
I'm wondering why you choose the Matte screen Idiamond?
-
that means: DO get an 8700, and dont pay the extra $ 100 or 100 or gbp 100 for the 7950gtx and buy a really good upgrade when it's available!
i mean, you don't want the 7950 because it's old, and you don't want the 8700 because it's underperforming... so save teh money. -
Depending on where you buy it, the 7950GTX can be cheaper... the 7950GTX was cheaper everywhere by 45-95$ up until about last week.
And the 7950GTX will last pretty long if you take it. -
-
Idiamond, I want to know where you got your 570RU for $1808 CAD o.o!
So I can get one too! -
Eurocom.ca
1999.00$ CAD for the basic one with T7300 WUXGA res, i got WSXGA+ Matte for -95$, 5% student discount, 1808$
You can buy wireless yourself for about 45$
bluetooth for even less.
Watch out for upgrades, they're overpriced
If you want the T7500, u might be better off taking the T7100 for -100$ and getting a T7500 somewhere else for around 380$ -
Most vendors have upgradeprograms and take back your old card or you have to sell it yourself. So you only pay the difference between the 2 cards.
