    Hi!

I have a question about the limitation of the amount of ram that I can put in to my Sager 5760. I have read that I can only put in a maximum of 2GB, but is this because of windows XP or are there some hardware constraints?

XP actually supports about 4GB max, so I'm fairly certain that the 2GB limitation is a hardware design constraint of some sorts.

Even with Vista + gaming, I can't see a reason to get more than 2GB right now anyway. What are planning on doing that requires all that RAM?

    Untrue, the Sager 5760 is a re-branded Clevo M570U.

The Clevo M570U does support 4 gigs of DDR2 (2 slots).

Sager is an OEM that does not give the option to get the 4 gigs because the price will add 10-15% to the price.. not worth it.

You can look at the same notebook from HyperSonic-PC, they call it the Aviator CX7. They give you the option to put 4 gigs in it.

Windows OS can see only 2.8 gigs of RAM, so it might not be worth it to get the 4 gigs unless if you are using another OS (such as Linux) that will take advantage of the 4 gigs.

The thing was that I saw a program about Vista and they said that the ram limitations that comes with XP will not be there for Vista.

But I remembered back in my head that it was not possible to add more than 2 GB of RAM when I bought the computer from discountlaptops.com. And I was thinking about the future, I don't think that 2 GB is a lot of memory. But as Gophn said it seems like there are no hardware restriction.

Windows Vista will get past the 2.8gb limitation.

32-bit Vista will support up to 4 gb.
64-bit Vista will support up to a whopping 128 gb.

The 64-bit is the way to go, gaming is finally at the point where 64-bit processors can finally get some life breathed into them. Just looking at news for DX10 games' requirements (ex. Crysis), 64-bit will be a definitely plus for gaming.

So when I get Vista I will be able to put 4 gb, that is awesome.
    A question that is OT.
When I bough my computer I have the Core Duo CPU. Is that CPU 64-bit or 32 bit? Or is the Duo 2 Core 64 bit?

    Core Duo's are 32 bit.
    Core 2 Duo's are 32-bit and 64-bit compatible.

actually, vista restricts how much ram you can use based on which version you buy:
    http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/winvista_ff_x64.asp

"For the most part, the x64 support in each edition is identical. One exception is that they support different amounts of RAM. Vista Home Basic (and Home Basic N) with support up to 8 GB of RAM, compared to 4 GB for all 32-bit versions of Vista. Home Premium, meanwhile, will support 16 GB. And Business (and Business N), Enterprise, and Ultimate will all support 128 GB or more of memory."

but for those with business, enterprise and ultimate do get 128 GB of ram, and up to 16 TERABYTES of virtual memory. thats like having a few hundred hard drives in virtual memory! sweet
