So my gpu fans spin up cause the gpu is being used... even though nothing is running. then about 20 seconds later my system freezes up and blue screens... i updated the 7970 to the lateset drivers clevo has put out a few weeks ago if that helps anything (installed correctly too, wiped previous intel+AMD ones before installing) please help me prevent this problem from happening in the near future, I don't need this bs happening during the semester.

    Thanks guys

Its a bug by driver there is solution for that :

There are two simple ways to completely avoid restart/start BSODs:

    1) Unplugging when restarting(meaning if booting or restarting your latop make sure its running on battery let windows run and after log-in to your screen just plug power clabe back and you can take battery or leave it)
    OR
    2) setting powerplay "plugged in" mode to max battery. AND afterwards setting it back to max performance (or games wont work as intended).

With any of those simple tricks i completely forgot about BSODs.

I agree its something ATI must fix, but its a problem entirely and easily avoidable right now.

That happens to me once every 20 restarts or so, I am with 12.11 latest beta drivers (clean install). And even if it happens, the next time I boot it (after the BSOD) it works just fine. Have only done the unplugging method once and it sure worked, but don't really see the need, unless, like in your case it happens every time? Does it? If so, I would mess around with drivers a bit more, try different ones. Anyway, let's wait for new official drivers from ATI, I've heard they are coming soon (hell, it's been almost 1,5 month since the latest beta!)

The 13.1 WHQL is being released today, so that will most likely be an end to any remaining BSODs.

yeah pretty much, for now i'll just let my laptop run through the night.

i'm sceptical for obvious reasons, so what is WHQL anyway?

WHQL are the official release drivers, compared to Beta drivers.

WHQL means the drivers are certified by Microsoft, meaning they have gone through Microsoft's testing. Betas are also official in the way that they are released and tested by AMD (as compared to modified drivers).

Oh, thanks guys for clearing that up. So where should I keep checking for the release of these official drivers? AMD or Clevos website?

I am looking forward to 13.1, but something tells me that it won't be great news for the 7000M series. If this driver still gives us BSODs, all we would have left to say is that it isn't tweaked by our manufacturers, making them "at your own risk" for us laptop owners. At least Clevo is putting out a Windows 7 version of their latest 7970M driver for us soon.

Well, WHQL simply means Microsoft officially verifies the driver software as stable per OS functionality. Any development issues from game developers is outside the umbrella of Microsoft's thumb up.

It is still possible (and even likely) that it will resolve most known issues, but just in case you run into the same problem OP, let us know so we can help you find a workaround.
