Random Crashes on P870KM1-G

Hi guys,

today Iam seeking for help dealing with random crashes on my machine.
It's a coffeelake modded P870KM1-G equipped with:
8700k (stock [email protected] override), 1080@[email protected] (5300Mhz RAM) with latest driver via GF Exp.
2x8GB GSKILL DDR4-3000MHzCL16
Intel SSD 540s 256GB
Crucial MX500 512GB
1TB HDD
Win10 64bit with latest updates

Crashes occur during applications (mostly games) or even on desktop and they are usually joined by a 0.5s blackscreen with artifacts. Mostly I can continue from desktop and rarely the computer reboots.
On some days, everything runs normal without crashes, even demanding games like BF5.
Iam pretty sure, that I suffer from these problems since I modded the machine to mount the TM cpu heatsink. But I also adjusted the 1080 voltage curve at the same time.

The tool 'whocrashed' gave me the following information. Does anyone have an idea, but this could be related to?

Sorry for what's happening with your laptop. Artifacts most of the time related to bad GPU's. Try to remove any OC or undervolting, and reset the bios and see if it still the same. Monitor all temp sensors and see if there is any unusual temps.

Temperatures are just fine, CPU around 75°C max and 70°C max for GPU at Battlefield after hours of gaming. I don't think its temperature related since it sometimes occured while idling at desktop.

Is it correct, that I no Intel GPU is listed on the hardware manager?

Something else I recognized is, after having this blackscreen with artifacts that not necessarily leads to a reboot, the wattage count at HWinfo64 turns grey and doesn't show any recent values anymore.

 

What BIOS do you have? did you mode the CPU pins (Isolated and shorted)?. Very strange to have the Intel graphics card to be appeared in the device manager, it should not happen at all.

 

It's a dsanke bios and the pins are isolated.

The pre-owner carried out the bios mod and also flipped the panel to a 144Hz G-Sync one.
As I heard this could affect Optimus and the dump files mentioned a potential driver issue. I checked driver details in the hardware manager and recognized the Intel gpu is not listed but at the same time I am not sure if it was also missing before these crashes occured.

 

The IGPU is not powered so is not expected to be visible.

So Optimus is not working in general with these machines?

 

It wil never work as it needs a hardware mux to be able to shift the signal from Igpu to PEG. On all P870 series this hardware mux`s does not exist, meaning that this machines are pure PEG machines. No signal is routed psychically to the IGPU. Your problem likely comes from a dying GPU

 

Optimus does not need a switch to work, it can just have the internal panel hard wired to the igp but that would remove g-sync as an option and make enthusiasts mad for a variety of reasons.

Today hours of BF5 gaming with no faults.

 

Worth also checking they have the thermal pads on the heatsink properly and that all the vrm chips are making good contact.
