Are any owners of the 8130 or 8150 experiencing random freezes with their laptop? Some owners of the 8130 reported random freezes during gaming, running non-intensive apps, or just idling.

I was wondering whether these freezes were limited to the 8130 or whether 8150 owners were also experiencing them.

    Thanks.

    +1

This is the kind of thing that my HP did that drove me nuts. No amount of re-formatinng, driver updating, or troubleshooting would get the thing to run or sleep perfectly.

Nope never encountered anything like that and I do leave my laptop on idle for quite some time, come back and it is as responsive as ever.

You gotta wonder is this why the sandy bridge recall was all about.

Sandy bridge was recalled because of a faulty sata controller. Nothing more. And that which eventually would die out shouldn't have any effect like freezing the system, it would just stop working. Unless of course the main system HDD is connected to the faulty sata controller but with the way clevo have their laptops setup the main HDD is not connected to it.

I have no clue, didn't happen once with me. Could someone please elaborate more on the issue? Does it freeze after resuming from sleep mode or what?

I've experienced these symptoms. I have the 8170 and it's doing the same thing. I've even started keeping a log of my freezes.

What happens to me is the computer just locks up. No error screen, just complete lockup with the last thing I saw on the screen frozen. It has been happening to me a few times a night (daytime I'm at work so cant tell). I have the same problem, it doesnt matter what I'm doing, browsing webpages, no apps running, just sitting idle staring at desktop it will occasionally freeze. On a good note, I've only had it freeze during heaving gaming once. The shortest time between freezes was 15 min at the worst however.

I have also noticed I have one hell of a time getting it out of hibernate. it seems maybe 50/50 it will actually come out of hibernate. The other times I can hear the hd spinning up and the fans kicking on but the screen stays black. I eventually have to hold the power down for 4 sec and do a reboot that way.

Incase anyone was wondering I ran HWmonitor and my temps are all great. On idle my temps range from 34-38 Celsius and under heaving gaming they get up to about 58 degrees. So I'm not sure what could be causing the freeze.

ehhh, that's not good. I'm glad I canceled my 8130 order. I might just look elsewhere. Having some random freezing issue would not be good for my sanity after waiting 2 months.

Mine froze on me while I was watching a blu-ray the other night. It froze about 2 hours in, which was what I had my sleeping setting set to. I changed that and turned off most of my other power saving settings, so we'll see if it happens again. That was the first time I've had it freeze on me and I've used it quite a bit....

What is in the Event Log? There has to be at least a Kernel-Power critical error from when you force it to shut down, but there should also be something before that.

Were you guys running on battery during the freeze? Were the components overheating? Its pretty odd that so many of you have this problem with such different specifications.

I was just playing a blu-ray so I doubt it over heated. My temps stay really low even when I'm gaming, I don't overclock or anything. Had it plugged in.

I'll check the event log when I get home.

I will wait... until then anyone with a "repaired" chipset suffered a freeze?

There are no repaired chipsets yet. All of us that have these machines got them shipped before the recall was announced. Some people have freezes and others dont. Not sure what the problem is.

I havent ran it on battery yet. As I started earlier my temps were very cool when it happens.

I'm seeing symptoms very near what Marvin is. (crashes every few hours, sketchy wakeups from hibernate)

Doing some investigation of the event log, immediatly preceding nearly every freeze is a little log underneath it with the following text in it.

File System Filter 'Avgmfx64' (6.0, ‎2010‎-‎09‎-‎06T18:49:14.000000000Z) has successfully loaded and registered with Filter Manager.

Since it is consistently there, it good place to look into the cause of the crashes. Further looking into that entry, it appears that that little entry is created by AVG anti virus. I'll uninstall it and see it it sits around overnight without problems.

EDIT: After further investigation, it turns out that AVG was not the culprit. After uninstalling, the problem persists.

The original post on xotic pc forums said that there were problems in both windows and ubuntu which would seem to indicate that it isn't specifically related to software/drivers, but perhaps more related to hardware. Has anyone else had issues in other os's?

You could try running a system file check:
    start button
    type cmd in search box
    run cmd as administrator
in cmd window type in sfc /scannow

    run chkdsk
same as above except type: chkdsk x: /f /r
[replace x with your hdrive letter]

Then try burning memtest86 to a disc, and running it a few passes

EDIT: also, which companies did you guys get your laptops from?

It would be nice to hear from some of the resellers, I'm surprised not one of them has commented in this thread to let us know they are at least watching the issue. I'm a little bothered if this is becomes another issue related to SB hardware kinda glad I'm on the preorder and can cancel if it starts to look bad.

Hello, I have been lurking this for a while and have decided on purchasing the 8150, but this thread is scaring me a bit.

However, I just had one question for those of you experiencing freeze issues. By chance, are you guys using SSD drives?

I read on another section of this forum (think it was the owner lounge for 8150) that SSD on ahci mode may cause intermittent hang ups of the system.

NP8170 here, been using it quite a bit for lots of things and no lockups. I don't hibernate, only sleep, but I did have ONE instance where the screen would not come up after sleep. But it hasn't done it since.

No Blu-Ray viewing yet though. But been playing Bad Company 2 quite a bit for a couple hours a few days a week and solid as ever.

If there is an issue hope it's resolved so they can fix it when I send in my laptop for the mobo replacement for the SATA controller.

It doesn't seem to be a widespread issue, and those who have it seemingly had it show up after some length of time which is why I was thinking hardware issue over software..

Here's the list of previously suggested options by others:
-if using ssd, try switching to IDE mode
    -uninstall AVG if you have
    By me:
    -run system file check
    -run chkdsk
    -run memtest86

I am pretty sure it has to do with the "incompatibility" between ssd and ahci. I myself have experienced bsod during boot (mostly) and freezes (i remember a couple of them now that i am thinking about it) but they are totally gone after changing sata from ahci to ide and reinstalling Windows. Please try it!

I'm not sure about it recently, but I had to make a lot of tweaks on my last laptop to get an SSD running properly. From what I understand Windows 7 supposedly does a lot of that for you now, but there are still some things that are better done manually as soon as you get Windows installed. I read all of those things off of the OCZ forums where it is neatly organized into a guide.

I've also had issues with my Desktop where I didn't properly load RAID drivers prior to installing the OS and it caused Windows 7 to freeze and hang intermittently until I fixed it.

I think that you all may be experiencing the woes of newly customized systems that don't have the driver suite fully figured out/compatible. It's probably a safe bet to clean install the OS following every precaution meticulously and see if that helps. Then I would try getting newer/older/third party drivers for various components. If you're using an SSD/RAID/Momentus XT it could be a hardware problem with your storage options (fairly new technology and by no means 100% reliable, check Newegg feedback).

I believe so, yes. From my recent experience with P150HM, my laptop had problems only when i was using SSD. The last 3 days, i have used 3 different discs -2 hard drives and one SSD- and 2 different versions of Windows 7. Changing AHCI to IDE solved everything. I just didn't have enough time to check the "freeze" issue, which, unlike BSOD which just takes a few reboots to show, is harder to experience, it needs more time.

If it is related to ahci, if users could download the latest Intel RST drivers and see it helps.

Otherwise I think the default Windows drivers are loaded. The Intel drivers also help performance in general.

Yes, the RST drivers boost the speed of the SSD by a lot.

I got increased 4K reads and writes after installing RST, and TRIM also seems to be working.

    Usual questions:

Are you using an SSD? And if so, what brand?

Were you running on batt when the freezes occurred?

    Etc

You can try running some of the tests that previous posts had mentioned.

I was using a HDD while the laptop was plugged in, so this may be more pervasive issue than we currently thought.
