It's hard to observe on first sight, you need to use laptop non stop to see it hangs unexpectedly or not. For example yesterday my Clevo P170HM didn't freeze. But today after upgrading firmware to SD24 i had 1 freeze after leaving laptop for 30 minutes in IDLE. Tomorrow I'll clone current installation of Windows 7 to another HDD and I'll check if this Momentus XT caused problems or not. I hope so...

Has anyone gotten one of these freezes while just using a text editor etc? something with no graphics but not idle?

I just want to make sure I don't get one during an exam, and those are done on a locked down vm that you can't log out of without handing in the exam...

The Momentus XT has some freezing problems in the past. Even with SD24, there are still users having that problem.

Got my 8130 last night and am experiencing freezes. So far 3 during use and 1 during shutdown. Also some really strange stuff is going on with the USB 3.0 slots. Anything I plug in them goes dead after some time (~10-30 minutes) A reboot clears them, but right now i'm keeping my external hard drive away :).

I've intalled all the latest drivers and am on Windows 7 SP1. Also I have the latest 128 X25-M intel SSD.

Pretty bummed about the lock ups. Windows event log isn't helping me in the least, it locks so hard before an error or a BSOD.

*sighs* hope to see issues fixed soon or this thing is going back where it came from...

This is a really strange issue because there are inconsistencies. Some people with the exact same configs in the same models have freezing, even with the same drivers and software. Other people have no problems. It even carries over models..

Is it possible you all have the same software installed that could be causing issues, and it's not at all hardware or drivers?

I'm not sure what else to guess at this point, because SP1 + new drivers don't help everyone, and not everyone is running the hybrid drives.

I'm just stumped as to why we *all* don't have the issues.

The MacBook Pro's are all receiving freezing problems as well. So that further throws a wrench into some of our theories. Seems the only consistent variable is Sandy Bridge. The article says one of the complainers on the Apple Forums was able to go into a Apple Store and reproduce the freeze on every single new MacBook Pro they would let him touch.

Here's the link to the article I got this information from:

Any idea on what he did that recreated the freeze on the Mac, it might not help here but its worth a shot.

Any idea if this could create a 2nd recall if the issue is Sandy Bridge? It appears that software updates aren't helping in anyway, so does that mean it might be a Sandy Bridge hardware issue? (yay more waiting)

I read somewhere that is heat related. GPU or CPU overheats because cooling is not adequate.

Wouldn't be surprised, Apple always engineers their heat a bit too high, what's the software fix going to be? Throttling the GPU?

Once i get my notebook (Still waiting xD ) i could do some simple tests to see if it freezes.
The salesperson i was in contact with replied mentioning they got the updated SB chipset Clevo's by the 20th and then the AMD card by the 24th.
But if i get the fabled 6970 ES that pops up as a 6990 im gonna cry tears of happiness. :p

I'm still getting freezes with my Clevo P170HM. I found running wow or SC2 in the background helps but that is not a long term solution. Hopefully when I get the new board it should fix my problems.

I've found that all my issues so far are related to USB. Things start to go whacky with whatever I stick in those USB 3.0 ports. I've verified I have the latest USB 3.0 drivers and Intel chipset drivers. Basically it goes like this
    1. I reboot the machine
    2. USB devices look "ok" initially
    3. Start to use USB device (eitehr memory stick or smart card reader) and things start out ok, then get CRAZY error mesages
    4. System says they no longer see the device (although it still shows up in device manager)
    5. I click resources in Device Manager and Explorer hangs
    6. A few minutes later the system hard locks

    Reproed this 3 times tonight....

Today I moved all my data and system from Seagate Momentus XT 500GB on new Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500GB (ST9500420AS) and after working on it 10 minutes I experienced FREEZE! So Seagate Momentus XT it's not a source of our problem. What I can do more ?
I wrote to Clevo about this problem and they sugessted only:

    "Dear Sir,
Could you please just test with your original driver CD without any
    update?

Well for anyone watching this thread, I'm sending my laptop back to Sager. From my debugging my freezes are actually related to the USB ports. Specifically the USB 3.0 ones really blow up. Here are my repro steps.

When using USB 2.0 devices in the USB 3.0 slots the system will start to go really crazy. Initially, depending on the device, it will work. For example, for roughly 20-30 minutes the flash drives and hard drives I have used in those slots work as expected. After roughly 30 minutes, Windows Explorer will begin to report very strange errors such as “Folder XXXX is no longer available” even though clearly it is available.” Eventually Windows Explorer will hang and within a few minutes of that , the system will hang completely. No BSOD and no errors in Window Event Viewer other than the “Your computer restarted unexpectedly.

When using a smart card reader, I can repro the issue much quicker. Within a minute or two of the smart card reader plugged in, the device will no longer be blinking and it will start saying “No smart card reader installed” within a few more minutes the system will hang.

When reviewing the details in Device Manager without any USB devices plugged in, the Intel and USB 3.0 controllers are reporting they are working correctly nad are using the latest drivers. However, when devices are plugged in, often the “Driver” or “Resources” tab will lock the system.

Nope. Just got off the phone with Sager though. For folks wondering, their tech support has now responded immediately to my phone calls which is impressive. I'm sending it in with the devices that are failing. It sounds like we have a company that really wants to get to the bottom of this and make sure their machines are great for their customers!

Get the newest BIOS from Sager, and that might resolve these issues. We have seen a couple other customers with similar issues and this worked for them.

In response to the suggestion above from Malibal, Sager has requested that we ask you NOT to try the BIOS update. They want to see your unit come in just the way it is so that they can do proper analysis of it in its existing condition.

As for what we have seen we have not been provided any feedback in regards to freezing on the 8150 from customers. If you are waiting to pull the trigger on one continue to watch the 8150 Owners Lounge as many people are getting them now and are putting them through their paces. I personally haven't seen an email in regards to freezing as the user above reported with his 8130.

Feel free to PM me if I can help with anything. :)

I'm planning to purchase the Sager NP 8130 too, but, I'm quit worried about the random freezes issue.

What should I do? Is it OK to place an order now?

Hello, I still interested in this laptop model and I'm worried about this problem (I'm from Spain and I must buy to foreign resellers) so maybe we can put some order here.

I think the only way to solve this problem is to add all the affected system's specs, info and behavior.

    This must include:
    - Laptop Model
    - Laptop specs (full detail, including all hardware)
    - PC, VGA and HDD's bios version
    - S.O version
    - Full drivers description
    - Different events that freezes the PC (3, if possible)
    - Errors reported on HDD SMART+
    - Errors reported on system's log
    - Energy system configuration (this include the hardware that can be turn off to safe energy

Have you any other suggestions or any useful info to add to this tamplate?

All this info must be pointed on the first page of the thread as index to avoid searching through the thread.

    What do you thing about?

    Hi there,
I bought last week notebook Clevo P170HM with this configuration:
    ~ i7-2720QM | GeForce GTX 485m RAM | 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 | 1080p LED Glossy LG Display LP173WF1-TLC1 | 500GB Seagate Momentus
Microsoft Windows 7 x64 with SP1 (Installed with newest updates from Windows Update)

And after installing all drivers from Sager drivers category and from CLEVO official website I have experiencing random freezes of P170MH.
I also installed newest version of Intel Rapid Storage Technology 10.1.0.1008 (iata_enu.exe) and Intel® Chipset Device Software 9.2.0.1025 from Intel official website and problem still exist.
What happens to me is the computer just locks up. No error screen, just complete lockup with the last thing I saw on the screen frozen. There is no bluescreen on the screen but notebook just freeze even in IDLE (it's random). Sometimes when I'm surfing over internet, sometimes when I'm writing something in word (for example).
Any keys on keyboard are not responding mouse also. All what i can do it's hardreset. After hardreseting sometimes notebook can't go trough BIOS initialization and just freeze.
When I totally turn off computer and unplug for a quick moment AC Adapter and plug it in again everything works till next random when freeze arrive unexpectedly :(
Usually I have only mouse connected (Logitech Vx Nano) to USB 2.0 on left side of the laptop.Freezes occurs even when any external devices are connected, no camera use, any optical disc is inserted, no bluetooth)

I formatted even again my hard disks and I made clean install of Windows 7 Professional with SP1, after that I installed only drivers from original CD attached with Clevo P170HM.
I have received also this Clevo with fixed Intel Sata controller. And unfortunately problem still exist.
I experienced today again two freezes in IDLE mode. I just went away for 25-30 minutes from computer (I disabled sleep, dim display and turning off display in Power Option panel). I noticed also that those freezes occurs when computer is doing nothing just working without any cpu load. I also checked BIOS for any upgrade but i think i have newest. My BIOS Revision is: 1.00.02 , dated 11/12/2011 (link: ImageShack® - Online Photo and Video Hosting I guess this date is a mistake). In BIOS i have set to run hard drives in AHCI mode, maybe there is a hope that it will be ok with IDE mode, but I will lose performance.

I don't know really what is a purpose of those freezes because it's totally random thing, sometimes I'm working all day without freeze and another day I have unexpected 2-3 freezes.

I was suspecting before my hard drive Seagate Momentus XT 500GB but even I made firmware upgrade from version SD23 to SD24 still no solution.
I installed even Windows 7 on another hard drive Seagate Momentus 500GB 7200.4 and I also experienced freezes after some time :(
I ran HWmonitor and my temps are all great. On idle my temps range from 34-38 Celsius and under heaving gaming they get up to about 58 degrees.

I'm running out of ideas what to do further to resolve this problem.

Do you have any solution for this big problem ? I have still few days for return back Clevo P170MH. And I'm surprised that such a problem exists in this class of notebook.

    Any advices ? :(

LightningPL, sorry to hear about all your problems. Since you've already formatted your hard drive, maybe you could install a different operating system, like a linux flavor, and see if you have the same problems. that would rule out hardware failure, maybe it is just a windows drivers issue...? might be worth a shot...

This is a no brainer. If you are not getting the support you need to fix a major issue and you still have time to return the product, just return it. I wouldn't keep anything that was behaving like that. Who is your reseller? Many here report that they don't get any complaints from anyone, so are you just coming here to complain or have you reported it to your seller? I would personally prefer a working replacement, which I'm sure you would be able to get within the default 1 year warranty.

I'm writing every day to my reseller (its mySN.de Schenker Notebook) and they last suggestion was to check RAM modules and HDD. And they propose to me to return it for checking this problem. But situation is more complicated because right now I changed myself display, added better WLAN module, and second HDD. In worst case I return it, but it is sad that this problem not only I have. That's why I'm trying figure it out together in this thread or via e-mails with technical support. I wrote to Clevo, Sager and other reselleres without any effect.
Last hope I see right now I will try with Ubuntu, and also with IDE mode enabled in BIOS for Windows 7 installation.

That sucks man. I remember hearing you say who your reseller was now that you mentioned it again. Sounds like you have a real pickle considering that you bought all the extra stuff to go with it. Maybe they can just replace the non-working unit with a working one? Of course this would require you to take out your own personal stuff and put back in the factory default.

Yes I have real problem right now and I don't know what to do. I have installed right now on my Clevo P170HM Ubuntu 10.10 x64 with all newest updates and till now everything is great no freezes yet. Ubuntu detected all components correctly , WLAN module, Geforce GTX 485M, Audio, display brightness control etc.. I will test it in next few days and we will see it will hang unexpectedly or not.

    EDIT
Still no freezes on Ubuntu till now hurray :)

how weird if it would really turn out to be a w7 based problem with those freezes.... :confused2:

Why would it be weird? Operating systems have bugs and problems all the time...

well sure but w7 having such a hard time while ubuntu just doesn´t show the slightest problem, compatibility issue or freezing? that IS weird! normally id hear from people having to go waaaay out to get all their components running with a linux distribution, seeing as w7 just has the best compatibility concerning hard- and software. but if its really just a software issue i hope theres gonna be a fix for it soon...

I've had mine Np8130 for about 5 days now, been in and out of hibernate many times, never gotten a freeze. I love this laptop! :p

My only crash/freeze has been while gaming with modded drivers so I don't think that counts...

I started with a fresh install of Windows 7 SP1 and installed the latest drivers I could find for the hardware, I've yet to experience a single crash or lock up.
