    Hello!

I've got my new laptop a few days ago and after much installing and copying of files I've finally hooked up my external monitor and my 5.1 speakers. The problem is that randomly my laptop freezes. Happened twice already after I hooked up my speakers. Both times it was with Winamp playing. The first time the music slowed and then everything froze. The second time te music continued playing and the mouse was moving but that's about it. Both times I had to do a hard reset.

I've pretty much tested every part except the hard drive for bad sectors. And that's what I'm gonna do now. The temps seem stable around 50C.

Any ideas would be appreciated :)

Edit: Windows says the disk is fine. At least his partitions, as he can't see Ubuntu's. Seems this is caused by the external speakers as after I've wrote this post I haven't been playing any music and the computer is working fine. Also is it possible that plugging a mouse and a keyboard in the same USB hub causes this?

what spec lappy have you got. that will help more people give you advise.
try all the above without the mouse and keyboard plugged in and if everything works fine you know your lappy isnt powerful enough to run them
buy a 4 way powered usb hub which will stop the power drain.

Completely forgot about the specs :D I panicked a bit :p
    Power supply is 180W. The rest: i7-3610QM, GTX 670M, 8GB RAM at 1600MHz, 500GB hard at 7200rpm

At least for now all is OK after I've distributed the mouse and the keyboard across different USBs. Been playing music for more than an hour. Still I would love to know what caused this. And I hope it doesn't happen again :)

Let us know what HDD you have in your system, you should be able to do this by clicking on the Windows start orb (bottom left corner) and the type Device Manager into the search box and press Enter.

Once that comes up, click the arrow next to Disk drives and let us know what the first two letters of the drive are. If it is ST it is Seagate if it is WD it is Western Digital. Let us all know if it is something else like Samsung or Hitatchi.

I'd check event viewer to see if there's some spammed error messages or ones that correspond to crash times.

I've seen drive controller error messages there when my drive was dying and the system was periodically seizing for a bit

The quick scan from the Western Digital tools said everything is fine. Gonna do a full scan tomorrow as I don't have time right now. Also I haven't gotten any freezes for more than 24 hours. Everything seems to be working fine.

Okay, so use my links to download the WD tools above and you may need the .NET 4 framework as well.

Be sure to run the longer tests on the drive to be thorough with it and not the short (generic) one.

If it still happens, try installing intel rapid technology.
Did the trick for me. ;)

You know that's one of the 3 drivers I skipped during my install as I wanted to keep everything as clean as possible :p So far everything is working fine though so I'm keeping my fingers crossed :)

Is intel rapid technology for all models or just those with multiple hard drives?

It should be available on all newer models (HM and EM at the very least).
