    Hey guys!

Can anyone help me with this? Basically everything was fine last night, but then I logged on today and a random horizontal tear appeared on my screen. It's not a massive deal but kinda annoying as it's of coloured. Restarting does nothing so not sure what's going on :S

can you post a picture for us as horizontall lines make us sweat as thats the first sines of a dying graphics card but horizontal tears could be something else like a driver issue.

also telling us what laptop you have, how old is it, and its full spec would help.

My laptop is a P170EM, its 5 months old. Specs are: 17.3" LED Full HD Intel Processor, 1600MHz DDR3, SSD + HDD, ATI HD 7970M 2GB GDDR5

I can't take a screenshot as the problem lies within the screen itself so won't show up. It does seem to look like a pixel issue and seems to come and go at the moment.

If it comes and goes it's hard to say that it's the screen. Usually dead or stuck pixels don't go once they come. Does the line appear different in color against different backgrounds?

thats a strange one. dont think pixels will fill up a whole line like that.

i would send a copy of that picture to your suppliers support to see if theve had any similar.

Could be a loose cable, or maybe the cable is bent, or too close to something else and you are seeing electrical interference. Does it always appear in the same place? Have you tried an external monitor? If it doesn't show on screen shots, and it is local display only, then contact your dealer for service.

It could also be a bad contact in the connection to the line driver in the circuitry of the panel, have a look at the display cable but if that does not fix it then the panel would need replacing.

Parts of it does disappear on certain backgrounds. For example on a white background only half of it appears.

Which cable do I want to look at and how do I find it?

Edit: Its getting worse, a second line has just appeared above the first. Exact same colours and all. This is horrible, barely 5 months old and this is happening...

Edit 2: This guy seems to have the same issues as me. They reckon he needs to repair the screen... http://s56.photobucket.com/user/climo204/media/IMG_5751.jpg.html

I don't have that model, so I can't point you to the cables. If you are not careful it is possible to damage the cables or connectors. Is getting service from your dealer not an option? Hopefully they can permanetly fix it.

No unfortunately that's not an option as I bought the laptop in the UK from a UK company, but am living in Hong Kong at the moment :(

Do a search for the service manuals. They should show how to open it, and might show the display cables that would need to be checked.

You will have to service it yourself then, replacement panels are pretty easy to source (and not that expensive) for this model so you can open it, check the cable and if it does not help fit a replacement panel yourself.

Yes but all you need to replace a panel is a phillips screwdriver and a panel which can be ordered anywhere.

Yes, so long as you leave plenty of time and don't rush it's usually one of the safer procedures even as a novice.

I've emailed Mysn.uk to order a panel. What's a normal price for a replacement panel? Is there anywhere else I could order from? Or could a computer repair do this for me? I've been reading some guides on how to replace a panel and not 100% sure I want to tempt it lol!

Since you mentioned you're in HK, could be worth having a look at which of the local computer shops are reputable and see if they'd be willing to do the panel replacement for you, if you're really uncomfortable doing this yourself. I left HK in 2005 so my memory is a bit fuzzy, but the Wan Chai Computer Centre (in Wan Chai as the name implies) and the Golden Shopping Centre (in Sham Shui Po) had lots of hardware outlets, so you might have some luck there.
