I've have checked out so many laptop on this forum it isn't even funny. I have gone from the Dell XPS to the Sager NP8660 to the MSI-1651, and just yesterday I was actually in Best Buy ready to shell out the money for a Gateway P-7811, but (perhaps fortunately) they were out of stock.
Anyway I am dead set on getting the 5793...it has everything I need for a great price. The main thing I want to know is this--
Is it the general consensus that this is an all around reliable laptop? Are there any recurring issues I should know about such as heat problems or problems with the build quality?
One other thing I could use some advice on is the screen. For a 17 inch screen, which is better? 1680X1050 or 1920X1200?
Thanks

Great choice!
I would recommend the 1680x1050 screen. It has plenty of real estate, is bright, crisp, and beautiful, and allows you to game natively at a resolution that won't crap out your fps. If your getting the blueray player with it, you might consider the 1920x1200 screen. I'd save the money from the screen and put it toward a better CPU, GPU, RAM, or other accessory.
Just a question, why not go for the NP5796? There are quite a few differences on this system that I love compared to my old NP5793.
I don't think you'll find a more reliable laptop on the market. It runs very cool, is usually quite quiet, and is of solid build. -

Well, a similarly configured 5796 is about $500 more and doesn't have the blue-ray. The 5793 info page on XOTICPC's website actually says "SPECIAL: SAVE $500 on select configuration in comparison to a similarly equipped NP5796"
The Montevina platform with ddr3 memory and the LOSS of blue-ray doesn't seem worth $500 extra dollars to me. I think they actually just re-released the 5793 with a 9800gts.
lol I just had a humorous conversation with some guy at xoticpc -
me: "Hi, I was just checking out the 5793 on your website and I'm wondering if you currently have them in stock"
guy: "Actually that's been replaced by the 5796 which has a lot of upgrades over the 5793"
me: "oh...that's wierd because I'm looking at the 5793 on your website right now and it says I can save $500 on the 5793 in comparison to a similarly equipped NP5796"
guy: "oh...wow...I guess we do have them"
haha, I'm assuming this guy wasn't part of the sales team. Anyway he proceeded to put me in contact with Justin who was very helpful. -
Oh wow $500? Ya the advantages of the 5796 are not worth $500. Just make sure you get 4GB Ram and skip the turbo memory, if its using the 512 or 1GB model.

As for the screens, I have the 1900X1200 and it's absolutely stunning! But I only have it because it came as a free upgrade at the time I got my lappy. I don't think it's really worth the extra $100 over the 1680X1050.
Hope that helps. You've made a good choice. -
That is one heck of a deal!
All most at even buy, the 5793 would be hard to pass up due to the fact you can use setFSB to make the performance that much better. To throw in a Bluray drive and sell for $500 less, just makes that deal that much better. My 5793 was 600 Euros cheaper than the 5796 (1299 vs. 1899), so glad that was the case knowing what I know now about the two. Only thing is, mine didn’t come with a much preferred Bluray drive.
I’ve put this unit thru its paces, overclocking, tweaking, flashing and it has handled it all well without any problems. So as far as reliability goes, rock solid. The same could be said for the built quality. I’m packing and unpacking mine from my backpack several times a day, and it’s holding up with no blemishes thus far.
If you don’t feel or know you’ll need WUXGA, then save the cash and get 1680x1050. But since they are throwing in a Bluray drive, go for it and get the 1920x1200. I’ve seen a lot of black backgrounds on laptops and desktops alike, it’s truly amazing seeing a black background on this lappy. Little to no light bleed, and blacks look as if you painted it on the screen with a nice gloss finish. -

Thanks a lot for the help guys...I just ordered a 5793. I'll hardly be watching many movies on this thing so I went for the 1680X1050. I'd much rather be able to play games at the native resolution. Here's the specs:
--17" WSXGA+ Super Clear Ultra Bright Glossy Screen (1680x1050)
--T9300 2.5GHz w/6MB L2 On-die cache - 800MHz FSB
--512MB GeForce 9800M GTS DDR3 DX10 (User Upgradeable)
--4gb of ddr2 ram
--2X Blue-Ray Read/8X DVDRW Super Multi Combo Drive
--320GB 7200RPM (Serial-ATA II 300 - 16MB Cache)
--Internal 7-in-1 Card Reader
--Internal Bluetooth 2.0+ EDR
--Built-in Intel® PRO/Wireless 5300 802.11 a/g/n Wi-Fi Link
--Built in 1.3Megapixel Camera
--Basic Black Business Case
--Integrated Fingerprint Reader
--Windows Vista Home Premium 64-Bit
--3 Year Labor 1 Year Parts Warranty w/lifetime 24/7 domestic tech support
The grand total came out to $1,836...I am so psyched...can't friggin wait to get this thing. Thanks to everyone on this forum for helping me with the decision making process. I've learned a lot here over the past few months. -
Too bad about the 9800M GTS though. Just make sure you overclock it! Although there are less shaders on it, it will clock higher than the 9800M GT and GTX
-
The Bluray drive and 320GB 7200RPM hard drive makes that an outstanding price!
For them to discontinue that model, and then bring it back speaks volumes! It also means we will get continued support for the 5793. -
Because of the low shaders, the overclock doesn't bring much power as it does for the GT and GTX. Still, that's a great bang for the buck system at 1800 bucks! -

ok, this is just wrong...it's been no more than 3 hours since I ordered the 5793, and I just checked the site to discover that they no longer have the $500 discount...now they have a $600 DOLLAR DISCOUNT. The price for my exact configuration somehow dropped from $1,799 to $1,674! You guys think they'll refund the $125 if I call them?
-
yes, do it now!
-
-
SplinteredVision Notebook Consultant
well their office is closed, but I sent an e-mail
-
You'll get the price posted, don't worry about it. I believe you have 30 days to test the unit, so I know they'll give you the $125 back or else. LOL!
-
Man!... Now i feel like getting another one!! lol!
but seriously, its an offer worth considering! -
Wow that's a really nice deal.
-
SplinteredVision Notebook Consultant
I sent them an e-mail and received a very fast response in which they said they would refund it. Apparently pricing is guaranteed until the order ships unless the price goes up, in which case their is no change. I'm gonna call them tomorrow to see if I can add the D-Link Wireless N router to my order instead of taking a refund.
-
I am also just a few hours from ordering. But I have some questions.
~Intel® T8300 45nm "Penryn" Core2 Duo 2.4GHz w/3MB L2 On-die cache - 800MHz FSB
~Intel® T9300 45nm "Penryn" Core2 Duo 2.5GHz w/6MB L2 On-die cache - 800MHz FSB ( + 175 )
Is it worth 175 for the upgrade? How much difference is there really? I do not really want to upgrade.

Should I consider adding it?

there is no difference in cost between the two. what should I take?
hope you can help me. -
@SplinteredVision - Nice deal you got your self there mate !
Nice config you have
If its for gaming and regular pc work, yea just go with the 1680*1050. I got the 1920*1200 my self, a nice screen no doubt, but in some games I would have loved a little lower native res. Tho the 8800m GTX still handles almost everything ive thrown at it in native res and maxed out still
And sitting at a distance in 1920*1200, texts can get a little hard to read when tired
@Maedi - What will you be using the notebook for ?? If just gaming and regular pc work, the T8300 should be fine, but if your rendering much I would go for the T9300 (Which I would anyway, the more power the better imo). About TM, well I personally I dont got it, but ive thought about getting it, if im able to get the 4 gb module and creative and intel will get along driver wise. Others are saying it's actually is working and there is a difference that can be seen. See if there will be an oppinion from one that actually got it
Got the orange/black trim and i love it, very discrete apparence. About wireless I would say it really depends on your wireless usage. Do you at all ever connect to N-Draft wireless ?

Ok, I just re-ordered it with the D-Link router for about the same price
-
Very cool. Quite jealous of your price!
-

Pros:
Desktop performance in a portable package
Runs cool
Gorgeous widescreen display
Top notch build quality
Sleek looks
Available with Windows XP
Reasonable battery life
Cons:
Very loud cooling system
Odd keyboard/number pad layout
Feels sluggish on battery (Nvidia issue)

Anyone know if the Zalman NC2000 will work well with this laptop?
-
edit: I'm sure it'll work well too
Also, you can take apart the Logitech mice, sand them down and paint the case if you want it even MORE orange -
SplinteredVision Notebook Consultant
^^Ha too bad I didn't see your post a little earlier...I just ordered the Zalman NC2000 and a Logitech MX518 gaming mouse off of Amazon.com. I'm sure the Zalman will do fine, and the 5793 isn't supposed to have any heating issues anyway. After ordering the MX518, I realized that its orange symbols will match the orange trim on my 5793!...It's the little things
-
the zalman works fine dont worry about it.. seriously i need a new office system for my desk and im 100% considering one of these i cant believe how cheap they are now
-
SplinteredVision Notebook Consultant
so what's the best possible processor that's compatible with the 5793?
-
splintered have you checked the video on youtube about the jet engine that is in the 5793? its louuuuuuuuuuuud lol
-
SplinteredVision Notebook Consultant
Yea, I was reading in Chaz's review how that's really the only big issue with the 5793. I'm sure I'll get used to it.
-
Well IMO the sound isn't that big of a deal... Think its most comparable to a desktop, with no silent extras... As I write in my review, its still less noisy than my desktop with a Zalman cooler. So if your used to desktops, this shouldn't scare you off, tho if your comming from one of the ultra silent lappies, it might be a bit of a shocker. Anyone of you know the Xbox 360 ?? Would say its a level or two under that..
-
lol! PS3 fans make a hell lotta noise as compared to ne of the consoles!!
btw Zalman should keep the notebook temps down and as the notebook is cooler it'll run silently enough. Moreover ZM NC-2000 is quite silent itself, do it wont be much of a prob!
I mostly game on it with my headphones on! so i can easily leave the fans at full blast no probs!!
also, while working, most of the time i'm listening to music so agn not a prob! but thats me! -
SplinteredVision Notebook Consultant
I was actually thinking the exact same thing, if I can handle the noise from an xbox 360 I doubt the 5793 will be a problem.

for the same price?? does your system ship with the 9800gt or the 9800gts??
holy crap these even have the blue ray reader standard .. wowowow -
Shane@DARK. Company Representative
The T8100 is offered at the same price as the T8300, because according to Sager that processor was a "miss-print" on the price sheet, and should have never been offered. However, they will fulfill all orders with the T8300 submitted by 10/13 at 5:30PM PST.
And all NP5793 laptops only feature the 9800M GTS GPU. -
SplinteredVision Notebook Consultant
Looks like they're starting with the higher end parts and working their way down...my first order actually had the T9300 as the cheaper option with the other one being about $250 more. By the time I re-ordered, the T9300 had become the best option and the T8300 took second place. Now it looks like the T8300 will best option with the T8100 taking second place.
I'm guessing these will be out of stock pretty soon...BUY BUY BUY!!
edit: nvm, DarkSmiley negated my entire theory haha -
man. i wish i had the money for this. that is a most excellent deal. that definitely competes with gateway's bang for the buck rigs.

This is painful...my laptop is sitting int a UPS hub 25 miles away and there's no way I can get it until monday. I was kind of hoping I could have the whole weekend to mess around with it.
-
Lol, don't worry. There is always next weekend
I remember I almost couldn't sleep the night before my M860tu arrived.
Ready to buy the 5793 today...just one (maybe two) question
