Does it make sense to purchase a Sager to use in my office? I will mainly be using MS Office suite (heavy excel work). I had my Dell die on me this week and am tired of shelling out for $500-$600 laptops only to have them die 1.5-2 years later. A friend told me about Sager and I am intrigued by the direct to manufacturer approach.
My budget is $1000 max. I am wondering if someone could point me in the direction of a particular model and reseller. Although I am on a limited budget, I was hoping to get an SSD (I know it is a stretch at $1k) - I have an NAS setup so won't need a whole lot of HD space. Is this feasible given that I won't need a whole lot of graphics performance? Many thanks!
Other Specs:
15" Screen
Internal CD/DVD Writer
Bluetooth
Wifi Card
HDMI Out

Doesn't sounds like you'll need anything high-end for graphics, I'd suggest checking out the NP5160. However it may be a little too high in cost for that budget after adding in an SSD, so maybe check out the NP3250 while you're at it

Sager NP5175 Custom Laptop (Built on the Clevo W170HR)
Sager NP5160 Custom Laptop (Built on the Clevo W150HN)
Sager NP3250 / Clevo W251HNQ
I would usually recommend Malibal or Xotic but Malibal seems to offer only 2 Sager/Clevo Laptops which are out of your 1k price budget. Check the ones I listed you. Also, you said a business laptop, so the ones I listed are not the best gaming laptops, but have everything you listed. -
How are the build quality on the NP5160 and NP3250? Pretty solid? I like the look.

I can attest to the NP5160 shell, which is pretty solid, especially in the palmrest areas (keyboard and screen flex can use some improvement).
-
I'd definitely try and squeeze in the SSD, it increases load time and productivity.

If you get the NP3250, make sure you upgrade to the 1920x1080 display. It makes the biggest difference for productivity, and the 1366x768 resolution of the stock screen is more suited to 12-inch laptops.
You don't need to be concerned about performance upgrades, so they will make no difference to you, but the screen upgrade makes a significant difference. Higher res = side-by-side windows, and more Excel cells.
If your eyesight is decent, look at the NP3250 / Sager NP5160 / Sager NP5175 with the 1920x1080 display
otherwise look at the Sager NP5160 with the 1600x900 display. -
I'm a huge fan of Sager, but in this situation...
I'd get an HP 8540p and stick some extra ram in it.
You can find these less than $1000 new.
The HP business line support is the best around (totally different from their consumer support), and lasts 3 years I believe.
Also the quality/durability of their laptop business line (elitebook) is a notch above. -
BenWah thank you for the suggestion. That 3 year warranty may be enough to convince me you are right however I can't find them online for less than $1300. Where do you get that 1k price from?
Recommend Sager for Business/Office?
