I made a little bit of a booboo. I got a little overexcited a few months back and after a ton of desperate attempts at workarounds thought the gpu on my p170sm-a was bad because the laptop would light up but do nothing else so I reflowed it but the problem was actually solved by reconnecting some display cables. Recently I had another issue where the laptop wouldn't start at all except for front indicator lights and I thought the GPU was done for but it was actually solved (at least for the moment by reconnecting the CMOS battery) Even though it seems the GPU is okay and has been for some months (aside from windows (but not linux) turning off by itself which I'm not sure is related) this brought my mind back to the issue of if the gpu could be trusted. On the one hand I could get a backup gpu since I reflowed it and that may make it untrustworthy. On the other hand the spare would be pricey and I've gotten it wrong a couple times already blaming the gpu.

Are your temps good? Any throttling going on? Does a game stable. If it's not doing it in linux it could just be some bad drivers from Nvidia (that would be a first, not ) perhaps try finding some GPU benchmarking software. See if it's VR load or temp related or another loose cable or solder point.

Check CPU thermals. Maybe your lucky and it just a bad batch of paste or something simple like another loose cable and it's just a coincidence that it happens in Windows.

Any other symptoms? Battery staying charged intermittent power connection anything weird that would help guide diagnostics?

Oh and maybe try resetting your RAM. My computer has the same symptoms anytime I pull a module and boot

Firstly don't amputate your leg if you get a small cut ;) Secondly check the seating of the gpu heatsink and specifically the VRM portion.

Reflow - repair question: anyone or shop in Los Angeles /OC who could attempt reflow of my Aorus? No thermal issues but the 1070 has to be underclocked to about 1100 or else I get occasional glitches.

I would check reviews of local shops. Typically reflowing is seen as a patch for a dailing chip that needs to be replaced.

I've always googled mine, then looked at reviews and the services they offer.

OK well, I guess I was expecting a more specific answer, given the focus of this entire forum, and the purpose being to help one another. No worries.

No, I'm actually based in the UK and the place I used was in Wales so I don't think that's so helpful lol.
