They called it the refresh I think. And I don't think the x7200 will be with Sandy Bridge, just because the desktop 990x can outperform any sandy bridge processor, so it would essentially be a downgrade, right?

Thats been on the cards for sometime

A refresh would be including a new mobo, new sandy bridge CPUS

This was to be expected, just a new bios that supports the 990X

So 32 threads which means 16 cores I presume that desktop has 2 quad core xeons in it.

    2 quad cores does not equal 16 cores...You'd need 4 of them - 4x4 = 16 cores x2 (HT) = 32 threads

I wonder if the emergence of the SB successor of x7200 will mean the end of life of real GPU upgrades for the current x7200.

Yeah it would, without replacing motherboard at least.

X7200 runs LGA-1366 socket - which is to be phased out as the SB replacement most probably require unseen LGA-2011 socket.

That said, mobile SB is good enough for most. :)

looks like what happened with the D901C 'upgrades' after D900F with a new socket appeared.
from the snapshot it seems the new LGA-2011 socket requires 150W for the lower consumption Xeon cpus, therefore it should be a single GPU system.
they will not be able to sell that laptop if the current x7200 gets further GPU upgrades.

the replacement of the x7200 will be a laptops based on the "desktop" chipset lga 2011, and sandy bridge CPU.

That cpu will be 8 core 16 thread monster (with hyperthreading). And quad chanell memory support.

That screenshot is from a desktop board featuring 2 such cpus, and 4 dimm per each cpu, meaning 8 dimms.
The 32gb ram in the screenshot means each dimm is fitted with a cheap 4gb memory module.
However, by the time this configuration hit the succesor of the x7200, there will be cheap 8gb dimm.

Basicaly the succesor of the x7200 will be
    1)8 core 16 thread 32nm CPU
2)quad chanell memory support with 4 dimms available
    3)4x8=32gb ram support
    4)Dual Gpus

Considering the current x7200 has at best:
    1)6 core 12 thread 32nm CPU
2)tripple chanell memory support up to 24gb ram (considering 8gb dimms)
    4)Dual gpus.

The upgrade is gonna be a notch up, still the best laptop in existance, best performing laptop that is, as is the x7200 now.

Hopefully they will add 18" screen, and some more gaming related improvements.

That. my dear friends is how the x720 succesor is gonna be.

hope there is a 450W psu come out with lga2011 x7200
and old x7200 can use it

More like 500W, the same size as the x7200 brick (due to technological advancements)
500 cause its a rounder number.
