    Hello,

I currently find myself without a proper rig (for gaming and work) after moving to a smaller apartment, which forced me to leave my desktop behind, and have been looking for a Clevo laptop to fill the void. The pricing on current hardware seem a little steep considering that Maxwell (and potentially Broadwell) will be arriving "soon". I have however just stumbled upon a deal for a refurbished P150SM (with 780m, 4700mq) which is approximately half off on price in comparison to buying the same setup new from the reseller.

I have been trying to find out whatever I can about the release of Maxwell technology and so far the sum of whatever speculations I have gathered seem to indicate that higher end laptop cards, replacement for the 780m, will most likely not be released this summer but rather later in Q4 of 2014.

The qustion is one that is probably posted several times a day here on the boards, is it worth getting this deal or should I wait for Maxwell?

I never understand these is it worth it posts. Everybody has different amounts of money, patience, and requirements. Also, it is easy to find a grouo that say wait, and another that say don't wait. It is luck of the draw.

Have you read the Maxwell posts in the Gaming section? So, is the potential increased performance worth paying the increased cost to you? Is waiting for more performance worth it? Will you need or want increased performance?

It's likely to be an 80% jump, the 780M is no slouch either, so it's up to you.

As originally posted I realize that it is a question that is asked over and over, and while every person has different preconditions and requirements I do believe that there are people on these boards with better general knowledge of Nvidias progress and of previous released technology which makes their input valuable to someone in my "position" :).

I could add that for me it is quite important to get my moneys worth when making a purchase such as this and that I do not have enough money to go and buy a new laptop every other year. But since I would buy this laptop half priced I could probably sell it when Maxwell is released without too much of a loss, considering that the laptop is without flaws and has new components within the chassi.

So when do you guys believe that the high end Maxwell cards will hit the market?

    Thanks for the replies!

If it truly appears to be a Q4 release (I do understand that this is all just guesses, but still guesses based on past experiences and expectations) then it does seem like quite a long time to wait without a proper gaming rig. The SNES games I can play on my Xps 10 tablet will only last me a few months ;). What performance can we expect from the mid range 8**m series? Was thinking that a W230SS could work, if it is released relatively soon.

Best guess for high end Maxwell is Q4. There is a good chance that they will work in the P150SM, since the power usage in Maxwell is so improved. So you could just sell the gpu and just upgrade it. Until it is officially announced, no one knows for sure. Even the Q4 is a leaked rumor.

Well the 28nm chip looks good so it will be interesting to see what the 20nm chips are like power wise.
