Starting to consider a Sager NP8170 as a desktop replacement for my old (now dead) Dell Dimension E510.

For those of you who own a Sager, or owned one in the past .... How do you like them?

    Are they durable? Reliable?

Any words of wisdom concerning the pros and cons?

Any known issues with this make or model?

    Info and opinions welcome.

    Thanks

I just bought my second Sager to replace my first without hesitation if that tells you anything.

So far I have owned 2 Sager laptops and I have a third on order. I have never owned such well built and reliable laptops before and highly recommend them. I only have a new one on order because I was too enticed by the performance increases of Sandybridge technology coupled with the GTX 485M.

I just got mine on Thursday, but already I can tell you that it's definitely higher build quality and sturdier than my previous Dell XPS m1530, and that'd been the best build laptop I've ever used previously. I can't speak to the long term yet, but I plan to have this for a few years.

Speaking of NP7280 - the laptop is spectacular, not to mention the keyboard which is ridiculously cheap and the stock lcd panel which is, at best, mediocre.

Apart from the keyboard, the build quality is fascinating. Not a single slightest glitch ever as well, so I'd say it is very reliable, solid machine, if not the best there is.

(Worth keeping in mind that I use an external keyboard all the time, as well as an external monitor.)

Thanks for all the input, guys .... but what about all this talk I've been reading about random freezing?

I don't want to have my first experience with a laptop to be faulty and have known problems right out of the box. You know?

Has this issue been addressed and fixed yet?

    Thanks

It's not a widespread issue. Most of us haven't ever had any issues. It's happened on other Sandy Bridge based laptops by other manufacturers as well. It's hard to say if it'll happen to you, but it's a remote chance. I wouldn't worry about it. Most resellers give you a 30 day money back guarantee if you're that worried.

I see. So the issue is relegated to the Sandy Bridge processor?

    Thank you for the insight.

Well, it's the SATA controller on the Sandy Bridge based motherboards. The chips are fine (that we know of).

When (if) I order my NP8170 what paces can I put it through to find out if I'm going to have a random freezing problem with the unit?

At this point it seems to be kinda random unfortunately.. Just make sure all your ports are functioning, maybe run prime to stress test the CPU, furmark for the gpu, memtest for the Ram, scroll through a slide show of different colors to look for stuck/deal pixels, make sure all keys/fn features work, audio ports, optical drive, if you get a ssd bench it to make sure it's around it's rated specs, and just use it how you're going to use it regularly for a while. Hopefully you'll be in the clear and won't have any malfunctions or freezes :)
