I recently got the bad news that my graphics card is fried, and it's about another 300-400 to replace it and it's pretty hard to find the part.

So I was wondering if anyone had any advice... I would not mind keeping the computer at all, but do you guys think it would be a better idea to just try and sell it? (It works fine for web browsing/word editing but it has other issues as one can imagine).

If I did sell it, does anyone know what I might be able to get for it?

    Thanks all.

I'm not too worried, I still have a year and a few months left on the 3 year warranty I got, I actually hope it fails soon so I can get a new one!

Psst, are you sure you have a parts + labor warranty and not simply labor warranty?

To be honest, selling it might not get you as much as you hoped.

What are the specs on it?

If it's a WUXGA and a decent CPU,HDD,RAM and in excellent condition, probably about 400-550 at best [the gpu will cost about 250 or more), since one can buy a new one (8800M GTX) with no warranty from Ebay and upgrade it to a decent condition for about 800 [550 base price (after BCB + new CPU (150) new HDD (40) new RAM (60)]

I have a nVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GTX 256MB GDDR3 card in it, the inverter had fried first, and so we replaced that not noticing the graphics card, which was probably the thing that did it in in the first place.

Problems = can't run any games that use more advanced features, 3d et cetera, which was the main reason i got it.

Also, it just refreshes very slowly when you move anything... like just moving a window is a chore, or scrolling down while browsing the internet.

Lastly its got the lines in bios. But not in windows.

If anyone has any advice I would really appreciate it. Thanks for replying.

Thats sad about the reselling price, but I mean I guess it's worth it to me to get some cash for it now, and get a new laptop with a new warranty et cetera.. anyone have any advice for selling it? Like should I go the ebay route or is there a better way to sell?

I was in the same boat. My vid card died for some random reason. I was out of parts warrenty, and when I sent it in, I was told it would cost 600 bucks to replace the graphics card. So I bought one off of someone on the forums, replaced it myself, and saved 300 bucks sans shipping.

Thanks for the links to parts. I think I am still going to just sell whats left of my laptop though. It's too much of an investment to keep this one going.

300-400 euros might aswell be spend on a new laptop. If it was like 100 euros i'd let someone repair it and definitly keep it as a backup.

Contact Nvidia to give a price to repair the vga, or try to get a other vga that fits. Maybe Nvidia can make you a deal on a 8800m or so! ;)
