since owning my ( SAGER NP8658) clevo p650rs-g i7-6820hk (per-ordered for the release of gtx1070), i haven't re-pasted it lel.
was so caked on, was like a biscuit. i read a lot of posts about bricked laptops and desktops, but just do your research. I also replaced all my thermal pads (last pic, which isn't mine gives an idea of sizes). some of the measurements are wrong so just measure yourself the mm.
overall idling and gaming i am down approx 20 °C.
here are the steps i did:
1) unscrew heat sink in reverse order, remove caked up thermal paste with 99% isopropyl (wax paper, q-tips, paper towels)
2) apply 3 coats of clear coat top nail polish (20min dry between coats)
3) kapton tape the all areas in case of spillage
4) apply thermal grizzly (test on aluminum foil to see how it comes out), swap it around with the q-tip it comes with to make it a shiny, sheet, liquidy film.
5) put a but on the copper heat sink also
6) put screws back on in proper order

good job there mate
just as an additional precaution, id recommend using a foam dam for added spilling protection. but that depends on how much you move your laptop around.

And how good you are at applying LM too, remember it needs a tiny amount. There is a bit too much in those screenshots I think.

thx m8!
i looked into those alread. laptop stays at home, moves around in the house only and will make sure to keep it FLAT.
the "light" + angle in pic make it shine moar. if anything i under put compared to all the youtube vids i watched/threads i read. it's an extremly thin sheet like foil, with no bubbling.
thx for advice.Last edited: May 17, 2019 -

Fair enough, everyone online seems to go ham with it :/

Just to clarify, for step 4, you used Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut, correct? Pictures and steps indicate this was the case, but just wanted to point that out to other readers.
Also, curious if you kept the foil around from the test. Did it disintegrate?

i totally understand, and read followup threads days later of bricked cpu's or gpu's.
i made sure to research intensively, last thing i'd want is a bricked gamin laptop lel
always owned (sager/clevo) never had a problem.jaybee83 likes this. -

It does run so easily when it gets out, not everyone is as diligent as you have been.McAudi likes this. -
A little upd8, played around a bit with oc, got it to stable 4.00 and overclocked gpu. max temps in intense gaming situations like high 80's.
here is some fun benchmarks. for 2+year old laptop pretty impressed. still able to play every game maxed out.

just goes to show how long pascal has already been around and how unsuccessful rtx adoption is

1070, 970 while there changes in power they served basically the same market.jaybee83 likes this. -

1070N replaced 980M
1060N replaced 970M -
and 1080N replaced 980N

Not really if you read what I said in terms of the market they serve. -

Not really, 1070N and 970M were neither price nor TDP comparable. -
you're both right
if nvidia had kept to their "M" designations, the 1080M wouldve been the 980M successor, likely comparable to 1070N performance.hmscott likes this. -

When you factor in the change in the dollar and inflation it is. -
yrekabakery Notebook Virtuoso
Nope, 1070N laptops were similar or more expensive than 9 80M laptops, same with 1070N vs. 980M MXM cards. Inflation is not a factor over such a short timespan especially given how 1070N laptops were around 50% more expensive than 970M laptops. -
The old Mobile graphics (M) is in short exactly the same as Max-Q nowadays. A crippled down graphics card vs. the real deal (N)

It did give up at 178W to be fair

980m not in a like for like chassis during its prime time. -
Nope, didn't anticipate it would go that high since I was just in a game at the time and not benching. I think the settings for it were reset since i changed my refresh rate and V Sync was disabled, so it ran as fast as my CPU would allow. Wasn't even a demanding game either

I'd that with a full set of VRMs or on an mxm board?

178W shouldn’t have been possible as the core power FETs were only rated for 120A peak.

yep thats why im so surprised. im getting a black screen once wattage goes above 125-130, the stock mosfets just cant handle any more than that.Arrrrbol likes this.

That's what it showed in HWInfo before it died, not sure how accurate that is though. Shame I didn't screenshot it.

Those last 20-30w were not getting a lot of performance.

Repaste Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut definitely worth it (clevo p650rs-g)
