Hi, I'm repasting my clevo p170sm-a gpu and when the heatsink came off there was this band of what looks like thermal compound on the heatsink in the margins that didn't come off with the rest and looks surprisingly neat. It looks like it migtht cover the black margins. I was wondering if I should take it off with the rest of the compound when I repaste.

Also what in your opinion is the best method to repaste the gpu and the cpu (which is rectangular)

Just remove them all and do the repaste.
Only tiny little amount of compound is needed in between the GPU die and the heatsink.
I used the little spatula that come with GC Extreme to spread the paste across.
above is my p170em with gtx1060, applied with paste -

@Billy2789 - How did the spatula treat you? I find it more difficult to get a good spread on the smaller chips with it, as opposed to relying on the mounting pressure.

I ended up cleaning off all the gunk and repasted with as5 with a line for the CPU and an X for the gpu. Idle temps range around 33-5ish for the GPU and 45-50ish for the CPU at idle.

I'd agree it's best to remove the old compound when removing the heatsink. Those temps should be fine

Paste should be re-done when removing a heatsink, the only exception is liquid metal. Pads can be left if they are in good shape.
