Is there anyway to get a hard drive into the optical drive slot on the m860tu?

I know with a lot of laptops you can get an adapter but I'm not sure if there is an adapter for the m860tu.

    nope.

    not possible.

that feature is seldom used, which is why so few notebooks are integrated with that.

Clevo used to do it, but stopped after 2006... since there was little use and popularity for that feature.

I recommend to just get an inexpensive portable external HDD (2.5").

For ~$100, you can get a 500GB WD or Seagate USB-powered portable HDD.

    Didn't kaltmond buy/build a custom smartbay for his M860TU?

I know it doesn't change the answer much but if you are experienced and dedicated enough it is possible but still no easy solution.

the optical drive is using a SATA interface, but going to the trouble is not worth it considering how cheap external HDDs are now.

It can probably be done with one of these. It wouldn't match the M860TU's bezel though.

you can just switch the bezel with the one for your system.... or buy another bezel and use it.

I was able to buy and install the caddy I linked to above, it's bezel only need some minor work to fit properly. I installed my 12.5mm Hitachi 5K500 without issue.

Nice job. What about the temps? Do they shoot sky high because there is very little cooling there?

Oh, and would it be possible to stick them in a RAID-0 config?

The HDD in the optical bay stays around 31 degrees, and my main HDD around 42-52 degrees.

Yeah, I'll run some HDTune tests to see how hot I can get it

EDIT: I was able to get the secondary HDD up to 36 degrees, and the main on up to 52 degrees.

    lol this is pretty cool...

as a gamer thou i probbably wont do this.. would rather that parm rest cool... going to make the best use of the 298gigs i have till i can aford a 500g SSD in afue years ^_^

mmm great info thou really nice to know..

all i want now is a way to put in more battery cells in the disk drive bay..

who seriously uses disks these days any way... 0_0 i think ive used my DVD drive.. 3 times.
    Photoshop dvd9 ..
Mixed CD (from a dreamy person*_*)..
    Windows7 (7000) upgrade..

Digital Distrobution is the future death to DISKZ!

Its prob cheaper to ask some one to build a laptop with out a disk drive and get a cheap external one for the rare situation when u need one.. hope clevo gets wind of this trend and has more agressive HDD/Battery/SLI options in the wasted space that is a disk drive that does little more than be a cool hand rest.

I use the optical disk drive a lot actually. However, something that can be easily solved with an external optical drive. I'd replace it with an extra battery or hard drive any day.

    Hi,

What was the necessary adjustment done to the bezel so it could fit ? Did you have to cut it ? Does the cd\dvd front can be removed and fitted on the bezel sold on ebay ? How about the color ?

    TIA

I just realized that I probably use the optical drives in my desktop about once a month. Having a not-so-external extra hard drive sounds pretty useful to me.

I had to cut a small section of the caddy's bezel out, so that it would fit flush with the laptop. I haven't attempted to swap the bezels, since the caddy's LED is pretty far away from where the optical disk's LED and won't match up.

    The caddy's bezel is black.

Ah, so I did purchase the correct one, I started looking after seeing your thread.

Did you line the caddy's LED up with the DVD's bezel?

In a heartbeat I would trade an internal optical drive slot for a HDD, or battery, or to have that space used for better cooling.

Guys, is it possible to setup a raid 1 ssd on m80tu with 2 internal sdd's ? If possible will the chipset be able to get the maximum perfomance of it ?

Btw, does the m80tu handles the full performance of a single intel x25-e ssd ?

nope no hardware RAID on laptops. You can do software RAID in vista but only raid 0. With linux you can do software RAID 1 though.

Why in god's name would you do RAID 1 of two SSDs. SSDs are pretty darn reliable and last a lot longer than HDs so RAID 0 will be a better way to go.
