I have a Sager NP9280 (Clevo D900F) with an nVidia GeForce GTX 285M, and the video is more or less dead. The system no longer identifies the type of video card, and can only use it as a VGA card.
Does anyone know of an available replacement that would work in that computer? I can't justify spending much on a computer that old, but if possible it would be nice to fix it. Otherwise, the machine still works great.

You can try and find a 680m for cheap. It will boost your gaming performance many folds.
Or just get something like a 485M, they go for cheap on eBay if you find a good seller. -
You can buy any GPU up to GTX 680M, but I think the price of it did not exactly come down a lot. But maybe you get lucky and find a cheap one, who knows
It is by far the best choice, expensive though.
When looking for a GPU keep in mind you will likely also need to purchase a new heatsink and readjust the pads as the 285M one will probably not fit for every other card.
Found this, maybe worth looking at. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the 670MX should also run in the D900F? -

Not for certain unless it has been tested as technically the 670MX came after the 680M.

670MX with the right vBIOS works:
