I am after a GPU for my dead 9800M GT that is currently sitting idle in my M570TU. I am just looking at buying the cheapest possible GPU to go into this chassis but am unable to find any information on what will fit. I would also love to know where I can get the replacement from if this is possible?
I did purchase a dell laptop to keep me going whilst another powerhouse was being built but subsequently had to cancel so I am now just looking to get my M570TU back up and running. If it helps I have a REV.1 chassis.
Kind regard and thank you for any help in advance.

Hello,
for a test I once had a 8700m GT in my M570TU- it worked fine. Used the same heatsink etc. from an M570RU.
You have to look on ebay, from time to time someone sells one.
I sold 2 of them last year and early this year for about 80-90 Dollars. -

I believe there are quite a few gpus that will work.
Right now I am about to force vbios flashing of HP fx 1600m cards that are the same as 8700m.
A good card out there right now on ebay for 100$ is the hp fx 2700m. Unfortunately I don't think anyone has tested these yet (the HP version), although they are for the same 8730 laptop as the hp 3700m which many of us have used and work flawlessly.
Whereas the 1600m I am working with are for the 8710 which is more proprietary.
if you spend ~100$ I would not buy something like an 8700m which is much worse than the 2700m (9700m gts) beside the fact that there are no 8700m on ebay right now. I actually got a 2700m for only 60$ recently although it is ES. -
Thank for that people, I am no longer using this Laptop for gaming and is just a workhorse for website admin etc. May play the occasional bluray on it but apart from that I wont be gaming. Is there not a card that can be had to just get the lappy booting again lol that won't cost and arm.....Kobalt have said ~700 for replacement 9800mGT

I have the exact same problem, my gpu just died a few hours ago, which is very frustrating especially since its the beginning of the week. So i'm looking for a replacement now but it isnt as easy as i thought it would be.
First of all i have M570tu rev3.1. I found a couple of interesting cards, one in particular actually. A FX 3700m NB9E-GLM3 to be precise. Now i have read on other parts of the forum that people tried replacing their gpu but got a black screen etc. I am wondering if this card would actually function or atleast be compatible with my Clevo since the card is HP.
Thanks in advance! -

The 3700m works 100%, no black screen. I've tested about 12 of them. HP and Lenovo both OK.
Alienwarez, I think this card will work for you: NEW HP 8710W 8730W NVIDIA FX2700M 512MB VIDEO CARD G94 - eBay (item 330508559472 end time Jan-13-11 15:52:14 PST)
be sure to update your BIOS. -
It is better to get this one since you have a high-end laptop:
HP nVidia Quadro FX 3700M 1 GB Video Card NEW NB9E-GLM3 -
thanks a lot for the quick response, i just ordered the 3700m, so hopefully i will have it in a day or two. Kinda frustrating that the shipping costs are as high as the card itself but unfortunately there is nothing to do about that.
I do have one question on the side though, i know it doesnt have much to do with the gpu itself but i have a couple of dead pixels on my screen and the screen itself isnt bright at all, so i have been thinking of replacing it with a new screen.
Now i have been searching around on the forums and found out that the LG.Philips LP171WU1 would be the best one to get according to some (i think i have a AU Optronics one but obviously i cant really check it right now). What do you guys think, worth the replacement?
And thanks again for the help guys, i REALLY appreciate it. -
You should also make sure not to invest too much money in a ~2 years old tech laptop, because your resale value would not advance much even after these improvements, apart maybe from a SSD and some 8GB of ram. -
I strongly advise against the LP171WU3 or LP171WU1 (WU3 is better). They are great screens but have a very high tendency to develop white pixels. Unless you get your screen with a 30 day no-dead pixel guarantee, don't get the LG.
Try similar models from Samsung, they are better. -
Thanks again for the quick replies guys, I am a designer by trade so i really need a good screen, right now i use an external screen which is manually calibrated, but if i do get a new screen i really would like to be able to use the laptop's screen to design also. (which i completely cannot do with this laptop screen).
The only screens i'm reading about on the forum are the LG screens, could you please tell me which samsung screens i should check out Blacky? that would really help me out.
edit: Also i see that there are several subversions of the LP171WU3 (TL B1, TL B3, TL A2, etc). Would this one be any good? LP171WU3(TL)(A2LP171WU3(TL)(A3

Samsung LTN170CT05 or LTN170CT07 (I doubt you can find the last one). They are very very hard to find. But I really like them. I have a LTN170OCT05 and I really like it. -
Thanks the help Blacky. I did find all the screens, though most of em will have to be sent from china, also most companies that do have them send them only in bulk (10+). I will make some phonecalls and see if i can somehow get a single samsung LTN170CT07 screen.
I assume you already did some research on this since you changed your screen to a samsung. I would really appreciate it if you could maybe tell me some keypoints why you prefer the samsung ones over the LG-philips ones.
As i stated before i really want to use the screen for designing so if the lg-philips ones tend to have dead pixels in comparison to the samsung ones, but the lg-philips ones are brighter, have better contrast or have more neutral colors, then i would rather take my chances with the lg-philips. -

You can find decent 17" LCDs all over the place.
There is a new one in the marketplace right now for 60$. Its WSXGA+.
Just don't pay 100$ unless its dual backlit matte WUXGA or something. -
Anyway.
The reason why I gave up on the LG were dead-pixels, I had one and had dead pixels from the start. I've tried to negotiate with another company to get a non-dead pixel LP171WU3 but they were quite frank and said they are not stocking them anymore because most of their buyers complained about them, again due to white pixels.
So instead they switched from LG to Samsung. I've tested this screen before I bought it and from my perspective it's just as good as the LG. Good light, good colours, natural I might say although a bit blueish. Very little graininess. Some ppl. in the past complained about the LTN170CT05 because it had terrible back-light bleeding, but with the new ones it seems Samsung has mostly fix the issue.
The only thing that I can see as a main difference is that the Samsung doesn't have the best viewing angles. The Lg had very good viewing angles and the other AUO 1088 that I had also had excellent viewing angles. But I have to say this hasn't been a major problem until now, even when watching movies with 7-8 ppl. in the room.
Make sure that the LTN170CT07 is 1920x1200 resolution. It should be, but when you try to get something on special order, it's not always whant you want.
I've paied 200 USD for my screen. -
Thanks a lot for the feedback guys, i am going to wait first till the gpu arrives and see how i will replace the gpu. I havent done this before so it will be a first time thing for me.
The only thing im worried about is the copper "shield" around the gpu i have right now, no idea how to get it off. But i only took the gpu out for a quick looksee so i am not sure if i just slide it right off or something. I'll figure it out, but i'll keep you guys posted.
I'm not sure if there is a how-to guide out there, else i will try to make one once the 3700m gets here. -

200$ is too much. Period. Doesnt matter what kind of screen it is unless you find some of HPs dreamcolor to be compatible.
I got a samsung WUXGA 17" lcd for 60$ from ichime. It was from an old alienware. Its 100% compatible with my m570tu. In general as long as the backlight is CCFL and they are the right size it will be compatible. Of course if your looking at an odd brand like hitachi then you might want to avoid it, otherwise I've never experienced and incompatibility. My dell XPS m1730 LCD works on my m570tu as well.
Now heres a well priced screen HP COMPAQ NX9420 LAPTOP LCD SCREEN 17" WSXGA 409975-001 - eBay (item 220723250140 end time Jan-17-11 08:40:04 PST)
I've asked the seller if this one is WUXGA. Dell Precision 17" Laptop LCD Screen Assembly 17.25" - eBay (item 220715763478 end time Jan-27-11 18:01:57 PST)
The only problem I've had with my m570tu is that one of the brackets that hold the screen was very strangely shaped, so I had to break it into a few pieces. It stays in just fine though. -
Thanks for the tip niffcreature, i'll keep it in mind while i keep searching for a screen around the $100. Though most screens i find are around the $200 so far. I just need to search better i guess.
That is indeed a very nice price for that hp screen, it is just unfortunate it is a wsxga screen and i really need a wuxga one. I am already used to the resolution and often have Illustrator and Photoshop open next to eachother on my screen, which i cant right now. (i'm using my macbook pro right now while waiting for the 3700m and the resolution of 1440x900 is just very limiting for me)
I am not sure if this is normal but the more time i spend looking around for certain items, and the more i learn about this whole mobile upgrading scene, the more things i want to upgrade on my m570tu. Was looking for a x9100 cpu to upgrade my t9400 with yesterday, i assume spending too much time with this can be quite addictive hehe.

2nd one linked ships worldwide.
and if that means you're talking 200 euro, then it only makes it more true. -
So i just got my 3700m and replaced the gpu and my system is up and running again
mostly thanks to you guys, thanks again for everything and kinda leading a noob through this.
So now i have this 9800 GT here and by the looks of it nothing is fried. Though what i did notice on certain "chips" on the card, was that they are covered in some kind of oily liquid, not really sure what it is, it doesnt look like any cooling paste i've seen before. I am not sure if the card is still fixable, but first ill make my 3700m run some projects and see how it runs.
Thanks again guys.
