    Hi all,

I'm hoping I could get some choice on a suitable (or better) replacement for the lcd display in my clevo M570RU laptop - Sadly, the entire lcd panel is cracked from travel damage :(

I've found some results from around the net, as well as on here, but I feel I need to ask myself, for the sake of being safe.

I've removed the lcd panel and I see it's an AU Optronics panel, and its Model Number is B170UW01 V.0.

From what I can gather, an LG LP171WU1 lcd panel is a suitable replacement, and would be ideal for me as I seem to be struggling with sourcing any more AU Optronics panels from where I am, within the U.K.

I've seen several posts, namely from from zfactor, recommending the LP171WU1 TL A2 panel being the best panel to get, but I am curious as to whether this is still the case to this date. I'm also curious as to how much difference there is between the different versions of the LP171WU1 (i.e., TL-A1 through TL-A5, and the a4-k4 ones, etc.), and why a seemingly older revision (TL-A2) is better than the seemingly newer revisions (TL-A3/A4/A5).

I would be most appreciate for any help provided on making a suitable choice for a replacement, as well as providing me with further insight.

    Thanks :)

(p.s. I would spend more time researching this matter, but I am in need of a replacement lcd display asap, due to University work :( )

Welcome to the NBR forums. :)

the LP171WU1 is definitely a good panel... I love mine.

    zfactor's recommendation is good.

    Thanks for your reply :)

Apart from struggling to source any AU Optronics replacements in the UK, the only options I'm getting on the LG replacements displays are too far and few between. :(

I've found one online retailer that is selling several versions of the lg lp171wu1 (including the TL A2), with all versions retailing at the same price of £185 inc shipping ($282 US , or thereabouts). Here

I'm seeing very few on ebay too, other than the ones from Ebay shop version of the same online retailer mentioned a second ago. The only 'cheap-ish' ones I see on ebay are the (A4)(K2), (A4)(K4), and the (TL)(A1), selling at £96 ($146), £90 ($137), and £120 ($183) respectively, of which some are used and in good working conditions (apparently?). eBay

In terms of comparative performance between these variations of the LG LP171WU1, what would any of the lcd experts ;) out there recommend as being the best bang for the $$$/£££? Is the (TL)(A2) worth the extra cost, or is it only a minor improvement vs. the other revisions?

Thanks, yet again, for any help :)

Just wanted to add to what I've asked above, if I may...

I believe I read somewhere that the LP171WU1 (TL)(A2) is a 2006 model, so correct me if I'm wrong please :) If this is indeed the case, are these displays still being produced now, or might I inevitably be purchasing a 3 year old lcd display if I went for the A2?

Furthermore, If the A2's buyable are all going to be fairly old, have any of you peeps out there suffered from many dead or stuck pixels after receiving your TL A2, or any other older revisions for that matter?

    Thanks :)

they were still being made till a couple months ago. they no longer make anything but 16:9 panels now.

i have owned all of them. the tl a2 is better than the a3, a4, or a5. it has better angles and better colors. the a5 is horrid with color reproduction and ive had 9 to try trust me its the way they are.

remember the tl a2 will have upper and lower brackets to remove for use in the clevo in most cases but its pretty easy to do.

i went through dozens of panels in my testing and that is my pick for tn type 17" panels. all panels can suffer from dead or stuck pixels even ones made yesterday. sad to say but thats quality control now for you. ive had about 12-14 tl a2's pass through my hands i have personally hooked up and sold prob another 9 or so and i had only one with 2 stuck pixels. the rest were fine

Ordered the lcd the other day, and just received delivery of it this morning.

Well, it seems the retailer took the initiative of sending me a Samsung LTN170wu-L02 panel, instead of the LG LP171wu1(TL)(A2)

Rung them up, and they said because the laptop I'm buying it for (clevo M570RU) isn't listed as using the LG screen I ordered, they sent me out one that they knew would work - they're both the same listing price.

Whatever happened to the phone call I should have got informing me of this decision, I do not know, but now there's going to be more delays due to this. :(

Any idea how the 2 models compare, as I cannot find much in the way of opinions for this Samsung model? Out of principle I have demanded the retailer take this lcd back and send me the one I asked for, but the fact I'm in need of a screen quickly has led me to come back on the forums to ask about their comparitive qualities. :p

Any help would be highly appreciated.

    Thanks! :)

    Hey,

Haven't been on in a couple of days due to University exams :( ..... thanks for replying :)

I got on to 'em and asked for the replacement to be sent asap before the weekend. Had a phone call from them yesterday asking why I want a screen not compatible for my laptop, instead of the one they sent me - they seem to be having trouble comprehending that I just want the bloody LG that I ordered... doesn't matter what I want it for; I'm paying for it. Sigh. I think I might finally be getting the correct one though after a hefty arguement with them :p

    Thanks once again :)

The correct screen finally arrived today.

I'm most definately happy with the image quality, especially after software calibrating it. The sad thing, however, is that I have a stuck red subpixel 1x1 inches away from the bottom left corner :(

Haven't removed the inverter or clamps off it yet, so may see if the retailer would be willing to swap it over. Trying all kinds of software methods in the meantime to see if I can get that subpx going, with no luck so far, I might add.

Well, thanks to those that helped :)

Most definately, yeah... and even better than the samsung I was originally sent :) I consider myself quite fussy when it comes to display quality, so I'm very happy indeed. Colour reproduction is much better than the original too, especially with red and blue, which were a bit iffy before, but I grew to accept it :p

Got it from the only retailer I could find, in the UK, that stocked the exact model and revision. I ended up doing a bit of massaging to the screen when it was turned off, as a last resort to resolving the stuck subpixel, and it's pretty much cleared up now. When slight pressure is applied to the screen in that location, it shows up, but then dissappears after a second or two. Hopefully it will be fine from now on.

Thanks and all the best :)

I hope that you didnt make your purchase from rolta.co.uk (notebookbitz) after all because your experience in this thread doesnt inspire much confidence in me!

Just forked out a hefty sum for a LP171WU1(TL)(A3) on their ebay listing so they better not send me an "alternative" or heads will roll!!!!!

This may sound cheesy but I have a stuck pixel that is green on my sager 5793. If you barely press with your thumb for me it will go away and not reappear for several weeks.

This technique is known as a 'pixel massage' and works on some stuck pixels, but not all.

yeah, the same seller that dogdirt2000 dealt with screwed me over too. Paid £199 for a supposedly BRAND NEW LG LP171WU1TLA3 and got sent a Samsung LTN170WU-L02 that was blatantly pulled from another laptop.

Screen was blemished and scratched up and mounting brackets still attached. Heck, even the anti-static bag looked like it had previously been used for something else.

Demanded a refund or else the matter get taken up with eBay, PayPal and UK Trading Standards. Going to get the correct screen from Smart-Micro USA now - opting to settle for a LP171WU3TLA2. Any feedback on this specific screen?

oh yeah, if based in the UK....stay away from rolta.co.uk (ebay ID: notebook bitz). It seems like a family run business as opposed to a corporate thing. I cant believe he's managed to notch up 9000+ positive feedback if he is pulling this scam. Customers are either too naive or dont bother checking model numbers, i guess. Well, I noticed and i'll ensure that he doesnt pull this crap on further customers!!

Sorry to hear the troubles I had with Rolta.co.uk have occured to you too :(

An absolute joke of a company indeed... I just gave them an earful over the phone as soon as I saw it was the wrong screen. Sent it back to them with Royal Mail next day delivery and demanded that they refunded the postal charges and got the correct one a few days later.

Something of note, however, is that both the samsung and the lg they sent me appeared brand new with no discernable signs of prior usage, so the fact that you received a marked screen is disgusting.

Sadly, it appeared to be the best place to get the screen from in the UK, cost-wise, which is why I stuck with it.

I do think this screen is superb though. The colour reproduction really does it for me, and the brightness and minimal light bleeding is also a winner. Even the stuck subpixel I massaged out hasn't returned to this day.

Hope you get everything resolved without too much trouble and agony.

actually i must admit (now) that i jumped the gun a bit too soon:

whilst i was repacking the screen, I realised that all the blemishes/scratches etc. were on the protective film on top of the screen which i failed to notice when i first opened the package. In fact, I only checked the model number and when i realised they did not match, i was so annoyed that i guess i just didnt notice the protective film - i feel like such an idiot!

HOWEVER, i am still out of pocket by approx. £20 given that i paid £199 for a supposed LP171WU1TLA3 but received a LTN170WU-L02 which the ebay seller prices at £179.40. I'll be asking for a refund on the price difference...I cant wait for a replacement screen as this 1920x1200 was already urgently needed; therefore typing this post with Samsung screen currently installed.

Works pretty well IMO. Certainly better than the stock AUO B170PW06 V2 that i had.

Question...I also (DUH) ruined my screen by dropping GLUE on it!! I have a matte on my m570ru. I noticed a recommendation for this:

    LP171WU1 TL A2

My question is...on the sites it says..make sure the backlight is the same...or something like that. I assume the above model replaces what is in my computer and I assume if I wanted to get the glare screen rather than matte that this would not be a problem. Is this right? Any info would be great.

I'm not even going to ask how you managed to drop glue on your screen. But don't get me wrong; I'm sure it's an engaging story to share over a few drinks.

First of all, what site is saying "make sure the backlight is the same." If you want the best glossy WUXGA screen, get the TLA2. If you want the matte version, get the TLA4.

Yes, well...the glue thing was not the smartest thing I have ever done! LOL

BUT...here is what I saw on several web sites:

"Please make sure your original Screen has the same SIZE ,RESOLUTION ,BACKLIGHT TYPE as above!!"

I currently have a matte screen on my computer...the computer IS a m570ru...I am assuming I can get the glossy screen if I want without problems fitting it in. But I did not know what to do about that written statement. Any thoughts. I sounds like the screen recommended on this site is what I need to get.

    DC

By the way....what does it mean that I should get the same resolution? Currently my nvidia control panel shows the highest resolution as 1680 by 1050. That seems less than the screen I am ordering...but I assume I can still use it. Sorry I have so many questions but I want to make sure the screen works if I order it.
