So, my 8150 is done as a gaming machine. Three AMD 6990m cards have died in it during 18 months of ownership. Sager wants $600 to put a new card in it, and the laptop isn't worth much if I could even find a buyer. I've decided to use it as a Plex client machine connected to a television in another room. At least that way, that expensive hardware will be doing something than being an ugly paperweight :)

Since the AMD card is toast, and the onboard Intel GMA graphics are apparently hard-disabled, I need a new card with HDMI out. Does anyone know what the cheapest possible solution would be? This will be used ONLY for HDM output - no gaming graphics or anything.

I was told 2 years ago that you cannot switch between AMD and Nvidia cards in the HM series (something to do with two revisions of the motherboards).

Anyways, that means you need to get an AMD card agan. Else, a nvidia gtx560m would be a cheap option (if someone can confirm that it will work out of the box).
Otherwise, AMD 6870m would fit too, but there are no Clevo 6800 series cards as far as I know. Acer, Dell ones are present but Im not sure if they will work (Clevo's picky BIOS is mega annoying).

In other words - its a real pain when you have to replace laptop GPU's, especially since Clevo's BIOS is behaving like a blonde spoiled girl.

that thing with non interchangeable nvidia/amd gpus was only targeted at specific batches of p170hm laptops. the p170hm3 with the 3d screen is definitely only compatible with nvidia gpus.

Thanks guys. I'm in the US (Seattle), so I can buy from ebay, etc. The GTX560m and 6870m look like they are $100 or more on ebay :(.

Will the heatsink/fan setup from my existing 6990m work with an Nvidia card if I can find one?

ull most likely have to change the placement of the thermal pads, worst case the heatsink wont fit at all.just be careful, other users have already bricked their gpus due to using incompatible heatsinks.
