My current HOT hard drive came with a hidden partition which is used to install vista. Is it easy to replace this drive and move the hidden partition over to the new disk as well ?

Or perhaps I should should just go and buy a windows 7 CD, install it on a new drive and sell the existing hot drive with vista ?

There are several programs that allow you to do that. I prefer ACRONIS :D . You can make a copy of the hidden partition and move it to wherever you want. But if you are going to install Win7 why keep the vista installation partition?

    OK, I'll check that out.

I don't want to install Windows 7 on my current disk as it is too hot

I suggest you use Acronis to Clone your entire current disk, buy a new disk and simply write the Clone to the new one and use your old one inside of an external USB caddy as a backup or spare.

Thats a good idea, might give it a go.

I assume its just a matter of removing a couple of screws and a cable to get the drive out. Are you supposed to apply thermal paste to hard drives or not ?

Just remove some screws, no thermal paste needed.

Service manual in my sig shows exactly how to do it.
