Greetings. I hail from the faraway land of the Alienware boards...and I come here on a sad mission.
My m15x shipped with a keyboard problem. Under certain conditions (such as installations running, games being played, or files downloading), the responsiveness of the keyboard would drop to unusable levels. After spending many hours trying to fix this issue, I sent it in to Alienware for repairs. That was a week and a half ago. I got my system back today, and despite their having replaced the keyboard, the issue is not resolved.
I'm not sure what to do now, but one option I am considering is returning my m15x, and getting a Sager NP5793. I have a few concerns though, which is why I would like to ask some Sager users about their experiences. (I couldn't find an NP5793 owner's thread, so I hope I'm not posting really common questions or anything..)
1. How do you feel about the look/size of this thing? Granted the m15x is large for a 15.4" system, but I'm still skeptical about getting a 17". According to official measurements, the NP5793 is about 1.2" wider than the m15x. Still, I've seen a number of 17" systems on store shelves, and some seem large, some don't. In your opinions, is this laptop very cumbersome? If any owners could post some pics for size comparison, I would really appreciate it.
2. Is the wedge design annoying? I'm apprehensive about the wedge, partly because I'm not sure if I like it aesthetically, and partially because I'm wondering if it makes using the system awkward. From what I can tell, it appears that the base of the notebook is always on a sort of slanting angle. Does this noticably affect keyboard use?
3. The m15x has a host of known issues with it. There is downclocking with the 8800M GTX, build flaws, and like in my case, keyboard response problems. Not all units have issues, but several do. Are there any common known problems that pop up consistently with the NP5793, or is it more on the safe reliable side?
As you can imagine, considering options like this are kind of stressfull for me. I was so excited for my m15x... Thanks for taking the time, and all responses are welcome.
-
1. Size-wise it's much lighter than both the Sager NP9262, Dell XPS M1730, Gateway FX AND the new Alienware m17x. I have no problems with it's weight or size at all!! You can take a look at my review for some pictures, not comparison pictures, but they should give you some idea....
And for a 15.4" laptop, the m15x is not just bigger but heavier as well.... I find that for a normal person carrying slightly more weight in a bigger chassis should be equally easy, considering the weight is spread out even more evenly. So weight (atleast for me) was/is never a problem, maybe size... but hasn't been a problem so far!
2. The design isn't annoying, infact it's fantastic..... it gives a nice opportunity for the fans below to suck in air from the bottom, as I see it.... then again Clevo always does a fantastic job on the cooling systems! And if you read my review, you'll know that the laptop looks MUCH better in person, especially the orange trim..... infinite pictures and reviews can't explain that to you till you see it yourself!
3. There are zero heating issues with the NP5793.... I wouldn't be too sure about downclocking.... I've seen it happen to mine with one particular driver.... changed that and everything was perfect...
It shouldn't be stressful, it should be a relief.... welcome to the performance lovers club!

nice Cloud-Hello Kitty avatar... LOL.
Pretty much there are no issues with the Clevo M570RU-U (aka. Sager 5793, Rock Xtreme 770, etc..)
Its the ideal single-8800M GTX notebook for the money.
And the Fan Toggle feature is amazing for maximum cooling. -
Also, I love playing Crysis on my Sager and kickin' Alien butt.... if ya know what I mean!
-
I see. Clevo only rebrands, never sells directly, correct? Thanks for the input, and Prasad, could you please link me to your review? I read the one by Chaz, but don't think I saw yours.

welcome to the brightside callidor... soon your troubles and worries will dissappear. all kidding aside, get a sager. you wont regret it and you'll save yourself a few extra bucks.
-
"a few extra bucks" being an understatement....
And this is more like the DARK side!! -
you can in fact buy it as a clevo if you wish to that is just the barebones version but then you add the rest. so you would buy your own cpu, ram, and hdd. this can be bought like this from xotic or rjtech. or you buy it branded as a "sager" and then it comes with everything installed otherwise its the same thing

i was going to say darkside but i didn't want to scare him off like darth vader scared luke

Alright, one last question. I would get this thing with the 1920x1200 screen. I would imagine that things don't look too microscopic at that scale on a 17" monitor...but it certainly is very high res. Would I have to worry about any games simply not going that high?
-
lol You're underestimating the 8800M GTX.... it plays all the games currently on the market (except Crysis) maxed out at 1920x1200 res like they're some old DOS games!!
Crysis however can be played as I did even at very high.... but not great FPS and a custom config, but that's CRYSIS!! Anyway, WUXGA is just fantastic... I simply CANNOT go back to my desktop now
And I find it perfect for the laptop, something higher or lower would just not be right...
-
To put it simple, I've never been happier with the performance of a PC! You won't be unhappy with this machine at all!
-
Well..these are all encouraging things. The config i'm thinking of would be T9300 2.5GHz, 250GB 5400RPM, WUXGA, 2GB RAM, and of course the 8800M GTX.
So you think Lord of the Rings Online maxed out at 1920x1200 would be no problem for the 8800? I've seen demos, and I know it's powerful, but I would really love to see it for myself! Also, does it usually take Sager long to put these things together before shipping them? Alienware takes a while, but I sort of like that. Lets me know that everything's being hand-done. -
lol LOTR ??
I'm talking about COD4, WiC and UT3 maxed out at WUXGA!!!
Anyway I suggest you go with 4GB RAM since there's a $35 Sager promotional on it (when you buy with 8800M GTX) anyway!
Ohh lol you've had experience with AW.... so you'll know how different it is when you order from a reliable reseller like XoticPC!!In the words of some one else..... "XoticPC was SOO fast with building and shipping, I was almost scared..."
On a side note, you're getting a Clevo!Celebrate!
-
-
BOTH!
Sager has a dealing with Microsoft to provide two discs per license. So you have ONE license, but both 64-bit and 32-bit discs!
And XoticPC installs 64-bit Vista by default before shipping
-
wow..that seems kinda crazy. which one comes installed on the machine? and does it have SP1?
EDIT: oh wow I also didn't realize that the special deal made the extra 2gb free. so i would get the 64bit version at no charge, and be able to utilize my essentially free ram upgrade. That sounds fantastic. are there any downsides to running 64 bit over 32 bit? -
-
As I said, XoticPC ships it with 64-bit Vista installed. And they ship all units currently with SP1 installed!
Again, both version discs are provided.
-
Ah sorry I missed the part about 64 bit being the default. Wow...this seems like a seriously great deal. you're making my decision easy...
-
Hmm..xoticpc seems to have it for cheaper than sager's official site. That's where you bought yours, correct Prasad? I take it you would reccomend I buy from there? Or is there some reason I should trust Sager's site more?

Actually, you not only get as good or better pricing from Sager resellers like Xoticpc or PowerNotebooks.com, but you also get Lifetime Toll Free 24/7 DOMESTIC Customer Service and Tech Support and an additional 2 Years Labor Warranty provided by the reseller.
We also both offer a 3% Cash Discount that Sager does not, and offer our laptops without an Operating System for those who don't need one...Sager does not.
You will also find both PowerNotebooks.com and Xoticpc have excellent Customer Service ratings at www.resellerratings.com -
Callidor,
Back in '02 (I think) I bought my first gaming laptop direct from Sager. March 31st of this year, I was convinced I should buy my new one from XoticPC and holy crap did I make the right choice! Not that Sager isn't a good company to buy from, but XoticPC is not only cheaper, but contacting and speaking with their people is a customer relations dream!
I spent more on my 5793 that I ever have on a PC before, if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't even search for another reseller! XoticPC is the choice for me from now on and I've even referred a few of my coworkers to them. I don't know how serious they are as far as buying, but I've caught them pricing up laptops on the XoticPC site during lunch!! -
Get the 4 gig!! For $35 how can you go wrong with that?!?! Check out my sig... it's an awesome machine!
Downsides... I haven't found any yet. I've heard of driver issues, but I have yet to experience an incompatibility with anything I use. Even the 2 year old Printer/Scanner I have works fine... through my home network at least. -
For those who don't know, all vista licenses from HP up are usable on 32 or 64 bit versions. If you don't have the right disk, download one and use your license...I bought OEM 32bit Vista Ultimate and d/l'd a 64bit disk and it works fine
-
Thanks for the input, but I think I've decided that I'd like to buy straight from Sager..call me weird, but I don't mind spending the extra $40 or so for the reassurance of buying straight from the official site. (Also, this is going to really be my parents' money anyway lol)
And yea, I'll definately get the 4GB ram. All I need to do now is work with AW and try to get that full refund. Hopefully I'll be ordering the Sager soon. Thanks for all the input guys, and I'm getting pretty excited. My m15x was an impressive system, but it looks like I'll be ordering a real monster from Sager. Here's hoping this all goes to plan...
oh yeah one more question. I know Sager offers to ship with no OS installed. If I select vista home premium as my OS option, it does come pre-installed and everything, correct? Not that installing windows is a huge labor, but I would much prefer for it to come pre-done and with all the drivers etc... -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
If you buy directly from Sager I would recommend asking for Frank...he will take good care of you.
-
If you select Vista Home Premium it will be pre installed.
Not to try to push you one way or the other, but know that if you buy from Xotic, you get the exact same PC, but with a better warranty than buying direct from Sager. Just an FYI -
Ok..this is the last time I'm going to ask the same question again. (Sorry for being so crazy lol).
Prasad, you sait that XoticPC ships with the 64 bit installed and both disks included. Would Sager itself do it the same way? I know a number of you are saying I should buy from a reseller, and I'm thinking about it...but I actually noticed that when I first configured it, I had no OS included...once I checked off Vista, the price was actually higher on Xotic than off Sager.
So uh yeah..sorry to keep asking but..buy off Sager and get 64 bit out of the box? Thanks. -
xotic pc doesn't ship. they send the orders to sager and have them ship it. so probably same way
-
-
Any reseller like Xotic or PNB would have it cheaper, as Donald mentioned...
If you feel uncomfortable take a look at this.
http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Xotic_PC
vs.
http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Alienware
And you've bought from Alienware before... -
What's the latest veridict on Intel Robson?
-
-
Yeah. I'm such a derelict. Your response was along the line of "it sucks", without much explanation. Thanks anyway.
-
-
The gears are officially in motion. I sent an email requesting an RMA from alienware. Hopefully I'll be able to get a refund without much trouble and order the Sager soon. Also, as for inquiries about the reseller prices...I'm sure I'm configuring them the same way. XoticPC is cheaper than Sager only after the cash discount is factored in. This thing is going to be paid for on one of my parent's credit cards though, so it seems like I would be getting a better price off Sager. There is still the longer warranty to consider. We'll see how it goes.
-
Not just the longer warranty, but the trustable and awesome XoticPC customer support.... that you won't necessarily get through Sager directly!
C'mon... it's just a bit more but fully worth it
And why don't you wire the money... to get the cash discount ? Also once again, without the cash discount, prices on both Sager and XoticPC would be same unless there's some mistake on the XoticPC site... it could NOT be more on XoticPC....
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Sager's price will be more than either Xoticpc or PowerNotebooks.com if you have the identical configuration, plus you get the extra 2 Years of labor warranty and Free Lifetime DOMESTIC 24/7 Tech Support from both Xoticpc and PNB. If you are coming up with a price that is not less than Sager's there is something wrong with your configuration comparison. Try calling for help figuring out where the difference is.
Also, when you order the 64bit VISTA you will get the media for both 64bit and 32bit (the license works for both, but you can only have one or the other installed at a time) whether you buy it directly from Sager or either of the resellers. -
The OS in 32 bit will only recognize 3.5GB but apps can use more if needed. My dads desktop has 8GB RAM and when he does photoshop/premeire in XP 32 it sometimes does that
-
RMA sent from alienware. full refund granted. m5793 will be ordered within a week or so.
-
Awesome! ^^^ Congrats Callidor!! Enjoy your Sager!!
-
Here's hoping nothing's wrong with it ^^; Out of interest, has anybody ever under any circumstances experienced anything remotely resembling the keyboard problem i had with my m15x on this notebook? lol
-
Not really, although I due remember one user had flex, but there has been no problmes for me and most of the people

My major complaint with the 5793 is that its baddassness makes me look like a fairy, so I have to get tattoos and scars and take steroids so I don't look like a weakling when I'm around it so I can get girls too.
-
Otherwise, the girls will go for the nb and not you
-
the keyboard does have flex to it. around the top f4 - 58 or so keys.. and in the middle area around the h and l keys. other than that no issues. also there is a small spot around the f4 key where the keyboard is slightly raised up a bit if you look straigh on from the front. not sure why. i took the keyboard out gave it a slight bend and it was fine. after a bit of moving it it was the same as before though...
but these are VERY minor things. i did have to have a keyboard replaced but they sent me one free of charge and then the old one went back to them. -
flex doesn't bother me at all.. I was just asking if anyone had experienced what I described in the initial post...where certain conditions cause the keyboard's responsiveness to drop. seems like nobody's experienced that.
