Maybe he just feels better buying it direct.
People have their preferences, even if others can't explain it, I mean, think about it, how else does Alienware still gets sales with amazing deals like this?![]()

Alright guys...I'm really hoping to pull the trigger on this order either tonight or tomorrow night...we'll see what happens. You've all been a big help in my decision making process, and I appreciate the input. Before I press that shiny order button, I just want to be as certain as I can that I'm making the right choice. Aside from the noise and minimal keyboard flex, neither of which should really bother me, are there any other common issues with this notebook that I should be aware of? Aside from performance, which this thing clearly has, I want this notebook to be reliable. I'm taking it off to college in a few months and I don't want to be spending time fixing it instead of note-taking and gaming.
And one last question for you all. I know I asked this in another thread, so I apologize...but I think I phrased it poorly because none of the responses really answered my question. Concerning the fan control... I know that fn+1 is full blast, and fn+3 is medium. Are medium and auto the same thing? If not, how do you switch it back to auto mode? Also, does it always boot up in auto, or does it stay with what you had last?
Sorry for the rather random specific question, but at this point I think it's more or less the only thing I haven't covered -

Medium and Auto are two different settings. Auto is the default setting the systems boots with without pressing any additional buttons.
FN + 3 is the medium setting. You press FN + 3 to toggle Medium Fan on and FN + 3 again to toggle it off and back to Auto mode. -
Ahhh that makes sense. Thanks.

I think you look sweet,Bill Clinton
One a side note, this particular Clevo would not be good for taking notes in quiet classes...
Better get the 9262 and start getting beefy -
-
Yes, this thing is loud, even with the med fan mode on. I'd have to be an inconsiderate ass to take it to classes.
-
I only take it into places where there is AT LEAST some background noise.
I tried taking it into a study hall.
Had to power it off 1 min later -

In Chaz's review, he says its "audible but acceptable" at low/idle speeds. Even just running word this thing would be distracting to a room of people?
-
Ya, worrisome.
-
Not really imo.....
Its fan noise. Its perfectly bearable and bearly audible. Unless you have fanspeedphobia or something, you and the people around you should be fine -
It might be "acceptable" as I said where there is background noise.
Study halls or churches, no way -
Okay you guys are probably exaggerating, full blast is audible, but when on auto, for me, it's like the thing isn't there! Maybe it's noisier for you eleron, since you have the older version, 5791 for some reason ? Not sure.... but I'm rather sure the 5793 and with the latest firmware is very quiet.
-
Perhaps, and I really hope you`re right. Because I will upgrade to that chasis pretty soon.
-
But as I've also mentioned before.... it could be since I've been used to noisy desktops all my life... My friend who ordered a 5793 himself along with me, was himself shocked with all the NBR members complaining of it bieng noisy... we both find it pleasant even on full blast, but definitely audibly... however not so on auto mode.
-
imo its not at all noisy without the fans spinning up all the time. now that they are on a steady rpm most of the time i find it only to be loud when it is first turned on then after maybe just a few minutes it slows them down and then imo unless im p;aying games or something (which shouldnt be during class anyway =) ) i dont even know its on..
i have had in my hands the 5791 which i have and the 5793 which a freidn has ...there is no difference whatsoever in noise. if you have the updated bios and firmware there is 0 difference as they use the same internal hardware.
the new "chassis" is not going to make any differences. its only the bottom cover not the whole bottom of the notebook. if you flip over your 5791 and look at the panel that can be unscrewed to get to the hdd, ram, cpu etc.. you can take off the one from the 5793 and swap it to the 5791. that is the only thing that has been changed. again its not the whole bottom of the notebook this is one reason i choose not to do the full upgrade, imo not at all worth it since there is no reason to minus the new heatsink. i dont care what the bottom panel looks like lol.. -
I don`t care about the looks either. But still,a lot of 5793 users report it as being very acceptable in terms of noise levels. It might be just me,or might just be a better chasis. I dunno. The fact is that either way the new chasis has the X CPUs supported and OCable. And that`s a plus.Besides,I`m not too confortable with doing the upgrade myself.
But if I change my mind, Z , you`ll be the first one I`ll contact about it -
well the old one can use the x series as well they just tell you "you cant" and they are oc'eable as well once they are installed it opens up the options for it. the upgrade .... is just to easy.. honestly.. its seven screws and you really cant screw it up.. you simply plug it in and screw it down apply paste screw the heatsink down and rwplace the bottom.. lol.. not saying this to be a shot at anyone but imo the extra $$ is only for the bottom / heatsink and their labor to do the job.. im sure i may hear about that statement but i have 0 issues and all works just fine..
-
Well, I know for sure that the noise won't bother me. I turn on a room fan at night for white noise...and my Alienware desktop is almost as loud as it is lol. I certainly won't be playing games in class, but the school where I'm going (Bard College) is going to have small, intimate classes. In most situations, it's safe to assume that there are going to be about 15 students sitting around a table, mostly just discussing things. If laptop note-taking is common, I'm hoping it shouldn't be an issue there.
On the one hand, it'll be a small enough setting that we should all just be speaking at normal tones, and everyone will be heard. On the other hand, it could be a little embaressing if my computer is the noisiest thing in the room.
EDIT: Turns out I won't be ordering until Monday ; ; -
lol i think the looks i get are funny.. kind of like what?? yeah i have the most powerful thing in this room right now!!!... sorry!!??
-
Haha...time will tell how well the gamer side of me (it's a pretty big side...) fits in with the artsy crowd of the school I'm gonna be attending.
-
Well for the me the only extra cost would be the mainboard and the shipping.
But what I really want is the TU chassis with added HDMI and e-Sata ports -
well that im sure will never happen via a upgrade.. im pretty sure that will rquire a new system
