Hey guysSince yesterday I have a serious problem with my laptop and my 6970m.
I was watching a movie when my screen suddenly got black. I restarted the pc, went to safe mode and understood that the problem was from the drivers. As soon as I uninstalled them I could start windows normally. However when I try to install any ATI drivers the screen becomes black after restart. I reinstalled the Windows, but the problem is still here and its quite irritating because without the drivers my max, resolution is 1400x1050.
Has anyone got similar problem and can you help me with some solutions?
EDIT: The card is 6970m, the drivers I try to install are 13.11 Beta 9.5 (which are the recommended in the amd web site). But I am not sure that the driver version matters as the blackscreen occurs with every driver I have tried.

telling everyone what graphics card you have would be a good start.
what driver did you have installed
what driver are you trying to load
more info the better -
Really sorry, I am quite frustrated at the moment. The card is 6970m, the drivers I try to install are 13.11 Beta 9.5 (which are the recommended in the amd web site). But I am not sure that the driver version matters as the blackscreen occurs with every driver I have tried.

Sounds like a bad card to me, specifically how it went out while watching a movie.
-
agree. if its the same for all drivers then its most prob hardware and the card is on the way out.
do you overclock? -
Yes I used to do it quite a lot. Damn a bad videocard is a terrible option. But doesnt the fact that without drivers I am able to use the laptop, just on strange resolution, and even watch movies, means that the problem is software?
-
No without drivers it's using generic windows drivers which will keep everything very basic limiting how much memory to use on the video card and stressing the card. Once you actually try to install the AMD official drivers, it will put it through it's paces and it fails. Baking the card will probably buy you some time but it's not a guarantee. In time it will be get worse and booting into Windows wont work.

The problem is that I am a student in Germany now and there is a month to go untill I get back home. Do you think it will hold up that long, because I have a lot of things to write.
Also it might be stupid question but what do you mean by baking the card? Like this Save a Dying Video Card with a Quick Bake in the Oven ? -
cant post link as at work but the idea is you put the gpu in the oven at a certain temperature and it slightly melts the solder which then reconects and brings the card back to life. reports have shown it can last from a couple of weeks to over a year.
just dont do what one silly done and put it in the microwave and almost burnt his house down.
i will post the link tonight.
also we have to make sure it is defo a dying or dead card but i have no idea whatsoever how to test amd cards to make sure. -
Thanks for the help.
As I mentioned I am a student abroad now, so I hope the video lasts me in this condition (without drivers) for another month, and then I could get it to diagnostics and if it is the problem to try and put it in the oven as a last option.
So I would be great if you can share the link.
However if it does not work I was thinking to upgrade my video card. My motherboard is P150HM at the moment, so 7970 should be working on my laptop. Or is it better to go for Nvidia this time? -

The 6990M is known for its failure rate unfortunately. The oven method of reflowing is not the best approach but it might work.
-
as prostar said it might work. so somehow we have to make sure the card is on its last legs first.
this is the baking method The Oven Trick (repairing your broken video card with an oven) | Overclockers
