Hey,
I am a student in Canada currently looking for a m860tu and I looked around a bit. The only shop in Canada for the m860tu is eurocom. So I configured a m860tu with a t9550 intel, 9800 GTS, 320gb hard drive, 3 years warranty and some other little stuff. It gave me a total of exactly 3012$ CDN.. which is pretty expensive if you ask me..
Now I know that they bargain and sometimes price-match but when I configure the EXACT SAME laptop at xoticpc it gives me a total of 1706.23$US.. wth?? Even converted to canadian it gives around 2100$..
A couple of months ago, the xoticpc one would of been 1300$ less than the eurocom, but even with the crazy us dollar going up the difference is still of around 900$!!
I mean, I will probably be able to bargain with eurocom but I doubt they'll take 900$ off their price..
So what did you guys from canada do to get your M860tu and how much did it costs?
P.S. Id rather get from eurocom simply because shipping and warranty will be less expensive/complicated/full of surprises/long

I got it from Xoticpc yesterday... I'm very happy with my laptop.. just pick ups express shipping
I received it in 4-5 days -
Like I have said many times in this forum.
Eurocom is a great vendor, and their prices on their website should NOT be taken seriously.
You should always contact them directly (email or phone). They are usually very willing to price negotiate and even price match for the same system from another vendor..... adjusted for CDN to USD of course. -
While thats true they will only negociate with you if youre willing to spend a lot of money ie. 2k at the very least. Based of my and 5 (though ive read quite a few here and from other websites) other people form my universities experience with them.
Their "discount" for me was $1700CDN for the following
P8400
9800GTS
1680X1050 LCD Screen
2GB DDR3 Ram
2MP Camera
Intel WiFi 5300
160GB SATA
DVD-Rom
8 Cell battery
that regularly (or was) cost $1743CDN
thats not even including taxes. pretty much stripped down compared to xoticpc price and would cost the same after conversion. how much do you think that should really cost?
Now i noticed the T5800 is their stock Cpu from the P8400 a week ago. So that would cost $1853CDN today.
Gophn, while i do agree that their website should not be taken seriously. Its pretty shaddy to put up prices like that in hopes some poor sap will come along and buy 1 at those rediculous prices.
Not to mention get any knowledgeable buyer like L4d here wondering why this website is selling him a laptop at a redicously price and if he has a real interest in it he MUST call them to get an actual quote.
Honestly why not simply put up real prices in the first place? doesnt that make more sense from a business standpoint? saves us a lot of time and hassle and potential customers for them who turn to xotic up here due to their website.
Which is what i plan on doing later on in the year for the new Calpella line lappys -
After some chatting and a graduate discount, I got a my M860TU with the below specs:
T5800
9800M GTS
1920X1200 WUXGA screen
2GB 1066MHz RAM
2MP camera
Fingerprint scanner
No Wifi
Bluetooth
250GB 7,200rpm HDD
(everything else was stock)
For less than $1,400 USD from Eurocom.
I'm located in the United States. -
seems like you were just interested in the screen considering how expensive xotic is for those upgrades. theres really nothing mind boggling about that deal. you got a better screen than standard and HD thats at 7200rpm instead
overall the xotic pc build is better (did that include shipping+gst?) at $1375. gets you all that plus a better warranty (theres is 1 year parts/labour) but a 1680-1050 screen instead. plus you have to ship it to them for any warranty issues, which could take a great deal of time. -

-
was going to say...you could have gotten a gateway for the same amount of money..downfall... no over clocking with them.... clevo you have a chance...
-
The same from XoticPC would cost me over $1,600. -
Well I suppose its more advantageous to be a US customer at Eurocom. They dont seem to give us much in deals and we get hammered with taxes and $40shipping ontop of that...sigh -
As others have said, bargain with them.
Also they offer a 5% graduate discount (so if you graduated high school your eligible).
Also, take advantage of out of province shipping. That way you only have to pay GST.
Finally, sometimes their exchange rate calculator is out of date and it might be cheaper to pay in american dollars. -
Eurocom does not even put wifi into the laptops by standard config; their bluetooth option is not cheap; the price of processor now is readjusted, and is rather expensive for anything hear decent. Though compare that with the $200 no Dead Pixel from xoticpc, its not too bad...
-
I think the mods actually deleted several other posts where I posted a price comparison between several retailers, leaving me with this. For those bashing Eurocom, here's a post I wrote several months ago.

As you can see, Eurocom is not always pricier than Xoticpc. I am not espousing either brand, merely pointing out that one should do some research before deciding on a company to make a purchase from. And don't be afraid to use exchange rates or price matching to your advantage.
I will add that John Shore was quite helpful, and definitely offered me a 5% student discount, even though I did not strictly fall under the category, seeing as to how I didn't graduate from a North American high school or college, but was merely matriculating in one at the time.
Justin has also been quite helpful, and is greatly loved by many of the users here, which does result in a imbalance of sorts, but that's not his fault. -
I understand what your point is. The price difference is only remarkable when choosing alot of options. To be honest I trust eurocom and their warranty and I know they have good service. But the fact that, especially with the new T9550 they added that costs 475$ extra, you get a pretty impressive total at the end.. is kinda frustrating
Anyway I have contacted them via email and they were suppose to get back on me with a price but I havent heard of them since about 6-7 days.. I think I'll send a reminder in case the email got lost or something.. But I'll post if they price-match xoticpc *lol* -

Do negotiate with Eurocom. After all, you can always go with a whole variety of resellers if Eurocom doesn't work out.
I am not a particular Eurocom fanboy, I just feel bad for it when users start bashing on it without having considered certain aspects. -
1. Im in Canada
2. I dont benefit from the currency exchange rate you do
3. I have to pay 13% more on taxes
Its primarily a benefit for US customers. Canadians on the other hand get shafted. We dont have any other resellers that can compete with them as you do. So youre in a far better bargaining position than us.
I have negociated with them and the cost for this build
P8400
9800GTS
160G HD
2MP Webcam
Intel 5300 WiFi
DVD-ROM
2GB Ram
wouldve cost me $1680 before taxes/shipping. ordering from xotic cost me a bit less after currency conversion at the time. compare that to what i would also get ontop of that from xotic
p8600
Bluetooth
250GB HD 7200
Fingerprint Reader
Better warranty
I asked for a price match and john would avoid the question all together. I can do my own brokerage at the border so Id just pay for basic shipping.
Its rather frustrating. Id rather buy here but I want to get my moneys worth. Especially consider how the economy is going now. I dont just want to throw away money when i can go to another storeand buy it for less and get a better quality product.
BTW what does Clevo include when they ship their barebones to sager? the chassis+screen, motherboard, and optical drive only? or is the gpu/fingerprint reader also included? -
You are wrong about you not benefiting from the currency exchange rate. Should you have chosen Xoticpc over Eurocom, you are already benefiting from the currency exchange rate as well. When the US dollar is comparatively weak to the CDN dollar, you benefit by going with with Xoticpc, just like how American consumers benefit with going with Eurocom's CDN prices when the USD is stronger.
Since they're in different countries, the cost is very much dependent on the rate of currency exchange.
The main point I was trying to get at is that, go with whatever is cheaper or whatever you're most comfortable with, but neither Eurocom nor Xoticpc is guaranteed to have the lowest prices.
If Xoticpc works for you, go with it.
As mentioned earlier, I am not espousing either brand. After all, I didn't go with either.
I'm guessing the GPUs are shipped separately, as there are a variety of GPUs that can be fitted into most of the Clevo models in question. Fingerprint reader should be inbuilt, especially for the Sager models. Optical drive can always be replaced aftermarket, as demonstrated by the option to choose other optical drives other than the default DVD RW. -
-
I paid ~ $2600 USD for my configuration, when it was released (details in my review). But since I bought US funds a while ago, that's pretty much the equivalent of $2600 CAD. Either with Eurocom or XoticPC/Pro-Star, you should be happy there was been the recent $400 price drop + better components for the same price. Also, you have to understand that since Eurocom is based in Canada, they have more taxes to pay as a company and they should logically have more duties to pay when they import from Clevo.
-
Eurocom's CPU pricing scheme with the new processors added in is insane. No way I'd buy from them.
Ridiculous difference between eurocom and xoticpc prices..
