hmmm....i dont see why not? only thing ud need is a (slim)SATA to USB connector, should also provide enough power for the optical drive. but why would u wanna do that?
lemme guess: u have that desktop drive lying around and u dont wanna spend money on a regular external optical drive?
edit: here u go
SATA (slimSATA) to USB Cable , connect optical drive externally [slimSATA-USB-C07] - $25.95 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks

The problem is to adapt it you are spending as much money as a slim DVD-RW drive :/

i use an ide converter and it works fine. get one at maplins ide convert : Maplin Electronics
-
but the OP has a SATA drive, not IDE....?
edit: nevermind -
-
think we got crossed wires here.
the ide connectors are for running an external drive with your lappy by usb plug. ide goes into back of desktop drive which also has power and then connects to your lappys usb.
i dont think you can put a desktop drive in your laptop as its just too big. -
Ohhh haha, nonono, I know I cant put it in I the actual laptop, sorry I completely didn't realise there was a SATA port on the side of this beast. Jesus that's completely shocked me haha. So I should be able to get a converter to power the drive through a USB slot (I think I already have this) Then Plug the SATA cable from the drive to the e-SATA port to transfer information right? -
Would you think I could use this to transfer the information through a USB slot?

Its going to be a lot cheaper and easier, along with more power efficient buying a basic enclosure and a slim line 2nd hand optical drive.

Mail me and I'll send you an internal DVD drive for £20.
Edit: for a standard one, I'm not sure if you're after super fast writing or just have a drive kicking about. -
Just curious but why would you do this? If you just need it on occasion, map your CD drive over a network (assuming you have another laptop and / or a desktop). I find I rarely need a cd drive these days.
Also if you have an XBox HD DVD external attachment, I found out recently this doubles as a USB DVD drive -
If you have eSATA you could use a power over eSATA cable.
Rigging a desktop DVD drive to a P170EM?
