I still wonder why Rock has chosen to keep the name of a company that went under, leaving ugly debris. A company that took orders from lots of dedicated fans in November, assuring them their Clevos would arrive by Christmas (but likely knowing they could not pay their suppliers for this to happen) ... then came out with excuses in January, February, March etc until they pulled their forum in the middle of the night :( , and announced a few weeks after that that they were in receivership, and hard luck anyone that hadn’t paid with a UK credit card. Their customers are savvy and presumably will want to know what guarantees there would be this time? Anyone from Rock care to field that one?

Because the name was, at one point in time, associated with good things, not bad, and because they'd catch a lot more grief in the long run if they just tried to quietly slip away from the Rock name, and popped up a week later under a different name altogether - anyone care to guess whom I'm thinking of?

Yes, in the short term, sticking with a sullied name will be a bit of a handicap; however, if they can rehabilitate that name, that will ultimately build a lot more goodwill than just slipping off the old name like a dirty negligee, and slipping into something "a little more comfortable" like a completely different name.

While the proof is, as always, in the pudding, the fact that they're willing to stick with the name, and the baggage it has - good and bad - speaks to their bona fides in a way that just starting fresh with a new name never could.

Or to an erroneous assumption that some people do not read IT news until a week before they make a purchase (and may just have missed the whole saga) / just go on a good review in the issue of PCW they happened to buy in the month they were in the market for an upgrade...

If you look at the Clevo reseller guide, almost all the names there are brands your average shopper (and even IT pro) has never heard of – that’s just the nature of the Clevo market. In Clevo's marketing wisdom, they have made a good product for the initiated only. I constantly get the ‘what?? You paid three *thousand* for something that doesn't even have a badge?! You sure there’s no little HP label or something on the back??'

Stone should have let that name go the way of Worldcom/Enron or at least have something on the site saying what went wrong last time and how they fixed it now. Looking at their pricing now, they are either bleeding profits to entice wary customers back, or extremely good at twisting Taiwanese arms in price negotiations...

I'm quite sure that more people know what went wrong than know much more about the company, so I doubt if there's any need to have a self-applied scarlet letter, or to pick one's scabs in public - so long as there's no dissembling when the subject-matter is relevant, e.g., in response to a direct question.

In terms of the discussion over keeping the name or changing to a new name, that's probably one of those subjective matters on which reasonable minds can disagree, so I say let's leave it at that; agreed?

Fair enough, that's a perfectly rational reaction; let me ask you a hypothetical - if they'd gone and changed their name to, say, Scissors, and not said anything about the connection, would you be more, or less, likely to go with Scissors once you found out that they used to be Rock, but had just changed their name after coming out of receivership?

To be serious, I'd rather put my money into an upstart (DSS for example) that has ZERO history rather than one that has a history of theft.

I think his point is he would avoid them whether under the 'Rock' or 'Scissors' name, which is reasonable, and certainly what I plan to do. As to the scarlet letter, I don't expect anything quite so histrionic. Just a short PR reassurance they they have now got their act together now because of a) b) c), and so it is safe to start giving them thousands of your hard earned dollars again, even though only a few months back they were busy stealing it from you (or more precisely, taking that money in exchange for goods that were never delivered for reasons we partly know courtesy of google).

By "KN" do you mean K│N as in Killer Notebooks?

I believe he/they were banned. Don was here yesterday...and I read a post from Justin 2 days ago so he's around...

I guess they are making rounds on NBR

Banned you say? Very interesting! Ya I saw Power Notebooks on one post yesterday. I wonder why K | N would get banned. Or Xotic, which would be far more surprising.

I have no idea why K│N was banned...and those that are "in the know" won't discuss it openly, those records have been sealed for 75 years.

Hello there peeps, wow I only just got Rock back here and look at that feed back

Rightey I geuss you have all heard lots of spooky stories and all kinds of things since the problem that sent rock into administration. So I shall start by putting alot of minds to rest and explain a few things.

Rock is now part of a company called stone computers which is a very strong company who serve the public sector , emergency services, schools, colls, unis, ect... They have been trading since the early 90's and have a nice reputation not to mention the funding and reliability they can provide rock..

Rock will be still making high performance gaming machines aswell as offering powerfull laptops to stones public sector.

No more loop holes and no more mistakes is the main key that is achieved through this.

As for the poor support customers were getting this is beeing sorted as I speak. The new location up in stafford now has a full time dedicated support team twice the size of the previous Rock team that was based in warrick.

The next 2 weeks should be the final week of all things bad and then the sky will be the limit. Plenty of storage , Plenty of Stocks and no more problems.

As for horrors on certain consumers who had bad gpus , we have decided to revamp the specs of the machines. We will be bringing in the 9800 GTX on the SL8's soon which will most likely be our biggest change.

Also some people experience bad lead times on machines that was mainly due to the administration problem, but again the new depot is huge as is the company merged with us so pretty much end of this month we shall be racing through things.

As is obvious alot of people saw felt let down in the past but things are changing and as soon as the lil back log (which is almost cleared) is out the way things will be totally smooth running.

All older machines under warranty still have their warranty and the warrantys will be hounored.

And finally my personal veiw being new at rock is as the same as anyone elses but in all honesty any person/company that can rectify the error of its ways and come back stronger is a improvement in it self.

Feel free to throw any questions my way. Although I do have to keep to forum rules and will respect that so anything that would disrupt that respect please send me a private message. Also I will offer as much technical support as possible to any users.

Best Regards hope to hear from all of soon

Back-to-school sales rush, I believe - remember all those folks agonizing over whether or not they'd get their NP8660s before school started?

Hello there Deathy I'm pretty sure I've spotted your posts on the rock forums to :d. Hmm we were planning to get them out this week but all the new staff needed complete retraining which left the operations manager stuck not being able to auth dispatches. I have been informed that from tuesday all machines which have had the payments authed shall be dispatched then onwards. But if you want more precise information on that I would suggest you address Ben@Rock on the rock forum and quote your order number for a exact time on your own order. Also I would advise you to push the issue so you can maybe get a priority dispatch for next week. If in the event you feel people are shrugging you off on the phone "Please" Priv msg me on here. It may not be my position but I will try my best to take on the issue directly to the managers and try an get something done about it. The last thing I want right now is any of you being shrugged off because someone doesnt know what to do. And to be fair I cant blame the new staff who are being bombarded trying to come to grips with things :D All in all do not fear and do not fret because I am here and although there are hundreds of promises I make I always intend to fufill them all to the best I can. *hell lol im not even PR* although i must sound like it. I'm basically loyal to my job.

P.S Hope that helps your querys mate , Like I said I am all ears to what needs doing.

    Best Regards
