I picked up a P153SM-AS through Pro-Star a couple of months ago (before the downgrade price-drop), and so far I couldn't be happier. However, in an attempt to preserve my batteries (I picked up a spare), I'm wondering if I can just run the laptop with no battery installed, so that I'm not leaving leaving one installed charging constantly after it's reached 100%. My understanding is that the new Li Ion battery can handle being charged at 100% for long periods of time without damage. However...if it would not damage the charging system, I'm more inclined to pull the battery and run without it. Batteries aren't cheap, and when I'm focused on school work I don't want to have to be monitoring if a battery is within the 20% - 80% charged capacity range.
If I CAN run without a battery installed, my next step would be to find an empty BAT-P150HM battery case so that I don't have an empty bay left open and uncovered. I can't be the only person that's ever had this question, but oddly enough, I can't seem to find any reference to it.

    Thanks,

    Walt

I know that it Would work, but (especially since I've now posted the question on the interwebs where it will exist forever) I'm hoping top get Pro-Star's blessing on this so that I don't end up in a warranty war if by doing so puts the charging system at risk. When I tried to buy a replacement battery for my old Sager 2090, apparently something must have happened to the charging system prior to doing so. Though I never tried running without the battery installed...the battery just crapped out, and then I was never able to replace it. But that PC was built in 2007 I think and batteries have come a ways in the last 7 years.

you can run it without a battery with no problem but if theres a mains power drop it will just switch off which in the long run can cause hardware damage if it happens a lot.
also i dont think you will find a dummy battery cover as its been brought to clevo's attention but they havnt brought anything to the table for years so i cant see them doing it now.
my laptop has been plugged in continuously and also has the battery connected on 100% and ive only lost 12% in 20 months so its not that drastic of a loss compared to my 7 year old clevo which lost 30% in its first year.

theres some monitoring software for batterys in my sig below if you want them.

Yep. 3 years 4 months here on my 5160 and only 17% loss. My compal jfl92 only lost a few percent in 3 years but compal had special software to keep battery half full.

Hey klipsch! It's good to hear you're enjoying the laptop. :)

To answer things in a word: yes. Yes, you can run off the mains, no battery inserted, and with no repercussion to the charging circuit or your warranty. It is best if you keep the battery discharge level between 20% and 80%, as mentioned, for the sake of the overall lifespan of the battery as well.

    So you're all good!

Thanks! Is it possible to get my hands on an empty battery cover so that I don't have a wide open bay if I'm just running off of the main? With everybody's input and software suggestions (installed Battery Care) I'm not "as" concerned about accelerated battery deterioration due to over-charging, but I rather be safer than sorry. Feel free to answer via PM. :)

    Thanks!

    Walt

PS: You never realize how fast your rig is until you try and use something else. I can't use the PC's at my college. They make me crazy!

as i said in my earlier post
"i dont think you will find a dummy battery cover as its been brought to clevo's attention but they havnt brought anything to the table for years so i cant see them doing it now"

so in other words there is no such thing on the market to fit clevo battery bays.

I was thinking more along the line of " bad battery sitting around the shop that's serving no purpose other than taking up space or will be recycled, that I could pull apart just to salvage the cover" That could exists. :)

I would just have your battery in, the design does not heat the battery when loaded and all the hassle kind of defeats the point of a convenient computing device.

never thought of dead battery but im guessing when dead they would be dumped even though its worth asking.
is the battery on the SM models the same as the HM or EM

Exactly. It won't hurt the battery to leave it plugged in. You run the risk of losing data or damaging storage drives if your power goes out or accidentally knock the power cord out, etc. People spend hundreds of dollars on battery back ups for their desktop PC's, so when you get one built in to a laptop, then use it.

And also I wouldn't buy a spare battery until you actually need one because you will have to charge it periodically to keep it "fresh" and it will degrade over time even without use.

Yes a second battery should be used by people intending to go on longer trips and used on a regular/semi regular basis.

You can find a very cheap battery from Spain in ebay. It isn´t new, but has a good price.
There is a guy that has bricked his laptop (clevo p170em) and is selling a lot of things.
I´ve already bought him a ram. He is also selling a 680m for 200€, I´d bought it him if I weren´t under warranty with my 7970m
    Regrets.

You can't always rely on getting good second hand parts but if a deal pops up then it can work.
