i am considering to move out of helios 500 ryzen laptop which i am an owner to this series , i am a tech enthusiastic and will buy this a barebone , considering that 4900hs is starting to emerge too i am a bit on the site to wait more to see if actual reviews of this unit will emerge.

Barebone can depend on the prices offered for the parts/software, sometimes getting a basic kit can make sense.

Yep, the AM4 chips are going to give some nice performance and features but they are not going to have the same power efficiency at lower loads as the new APUs.

If you don't care about portability and battery life the AM4 chips are going to do very nicely.

The "Clevo NH55AFW" comes with a regular AM4 Desktop socket.
Der8auer on youtube tested an early version of it.
    link:

    Thats the XMG-branded version.
He has an unlocked version of the bios. Ram overclocking didnt work, yet tho.

I am getting the regular "Clevo NH55AFW" branded version from this shop: https://laptopparts4less.frl/game-l...evo-NH55AFW-RTX-2070-game-laptop-samenstellen

They apparently already have it in stock. They seem to have the cheapest price. I ordered mine via email, since i am buying it without ram or windows-installation.
I have e-mailed them about an unlocked BIOS, but they probably won't reply before monday.

If you're looking to get rid of your Helios 500 with Ryzen/Vega, I'd be interested in that laptop (depending on where you are and price you might want for it - I'm in UK btw).

That said, I wouldn't be so quick to discard the Helios 500 with Ryzen/Vega.
Its a pretty powerful system with a really great GPU which can be overclocked to match more or less desktop GTX 1080 without exceeding its 120W TDP, and it has much larger compute at its disposal than any comparable NV GPU's which is very useful in content creation.

Plus the cooling in the Predator Helios 500 is ridiculously powerful and the unit is QUIET.

    No, they definitely weren't.
But if what you said in the other thread is acurate, i dont mind as much anyway.
If i can flash the firmware from some other manufacturer that sells them unlocked i am fine with it.
Or maybe i leave it as is for some time.
    I ordered Crucial Ballistix 3200 cl16 ram.
That by itself shouldnt be bad at all.

Hard to get hold of such files normally. Mostly cooling and temperatures will be the biggest thing though so those ryzen master settings are key.

Yep. Someone who bought an XMG laptop would have to share the files, i imagine.
I doubt XMG will give them out to anyone who didnt purchase an XMG-branded model.

Havent been here in years. I remember bios files being shared. Is that still a thing?

FWIW, der8auer had those same modules, and could not get them to run at their rated specs in this system despite some elbow grease.

I know. It was a prototype tho with a very early bios, so i imagine thats probably why it didnt work the way it should have.

@Meaker@Sager Any suggestions for places/people that still do that stuff?

Got a message from laptopparts4less today.
I inquired about the change in availability of the notebook one day after i ordered.
(went from in stock to not available)

    Got this reply:
"Yes, I'm afraid this is correct. We have asked our supplier when they receive new stock and perhaps we can offer an alternative with the same specs.

If it takes too long then you can cancel the order and we will send the money back immediately.

    Sorry for the inconvenience.

    Best regards"

Curious to see what alternative they will propose.

Maybe you could cancel, then re-order it from XMG since you want their bios? I am guessing it will cost more, but with regards to unlocking a bios just having it come with it ready to go is probably worth whatever the price difference is. That way updates will already be unlocked too, as well, and support won't ever be an issue because of it.

For the same specs XMG costs around 1800€, where laptopsparts4less charged me around 1500€.
Thats one hell of a premium. Sure it would be lovely to overclock my ram, but thats not essential.
I'd rather just wait for their alternative offer or get my money back until they can source the model.

I'd take functional bios over a bunch of unlocked settings that do not work. How much is locked off in the stock bios?

I dont think anyone has a final retail unit, yet.
    So hard to say.
Der8auer had a video up recently, but that was only a prototype, according to him.
Ram overclocking was available there, but non-functional.

Yep, thats a pretty big premium. Overclocking RAM isn't worth it in my opinion. Once stuff with better JEDEC timing is released, you can simply install it and it should pick it up automatically.

XMP would do nicely, but i have googled a bit and found this:
    Link: https://www.win-raid.com/t4243f36-Successfully-unlocked-N-xEJEK-Coffeelake-Clevo-Notebook.html

Apparently that Clevo model didnt even have XMP available. Yikes, thats rough.
Is that the case for most clevos?

But what good would that do if you cant apply XMP/DOCP profiles and cant change any ram settings.
They would just sit there at around ~2000mhz with terrible latencies.
RAM speeds matter when it comes to Ryzen.

I was offered the "NH57AF1" because the "NH55AFW" wont be in stock for another 3 to 4 weeks at laptoparts4less.
Switching to that model would cost me an extra 50 bucks, so i assume something has to be different.
The descriptions at clevo.tw are exactly the same tho.

    EDIT:
I asked about the differences and the shop replied the following:
"Yes, the hardware is the same. It looks like the NH57AF1 has a better screen, 90% sRGB and the screen lid is made from aluminum instead of plastic."

I have an NH55AFW on order. I ordered it on the 15th. The shop (laptopparts4less) is working on it now (seems to be an issue with an SSD not being recognized). Really looking forward to receiving it. Even though it is not for me but for the wife :-(

MP510 960 SSD. I guess it is a DOA, the MP510 480GB works fine they tell me.
I asked to get it with just a single 480GB ssd. I can always add extra storage later (the wife is getting impatient haha)

That worked out perfect for you! That chassis is the exact same as what XMG Apex 15 uses. I would certainly pay an extra $50 for the metal lid and better screen.

I wouldn't worry. They install windows on it so it should be fine. If you ordered it without windows on it they will at least check the bios to avoid returns.

Which CPU did you go for? I ordered mine with the 3700X. After seeing my friends 3600 wrecking my 7700k in cinebench I think it might be a bit overkill XD

I went for the 3700x, too.
Price to Performance is amazing on that CPU and the 65w powerlimit in the notebook doesnt affect it, since thats what it normally runs at.
Sadly, the 3900-series of CPUs have to run in "Eco mode" to fit that power-envelope, so they dont perform as well as they would in a Desktop.
The 3700x definitely was the perfect choice here.

Especially since you still have the option to upgrade to a Ryzen 4000 (Desktop, not the Notebook-4000 series) after those release.

I think the 3700X is definitely a good choice. On par with the 9900k at stock but with far less temperature and noise.

I ended up ordering a 3950X myself. Based on the current benchmarks XMG posted in performance mode, it should be double the multithreaded performance of the 9880H in the Precision 7740. I just hope there are not any weird Linux bugs with the NH58AF1. For the time being I will just keep both until everything is working properly.

Single thread is going to be very similar, but any video editing or similar stuff and that 3950x will murder any other mainstream CPU.

Yeah and it doesnt even seem to perform any worse in gaming compared to the 3700x. Even tho its set to eco-mode.
Thats really impressive and i would love to have gotten one, but i dont have the money or an appropriate use-case for it.
I will just wait the Ryzen 4000 Desktop CPUs to release and when those start dropping in price, i might upgrade to a new 65w part.

It will be a good upgrade from the 9880H for me. I run five WoW accounts, so having two cores for each plus some headroom for Chrome and whatnot will be very nice, especially in busy areas. For work we do consulting so there is always some new horribly optimized project we are taking on that can use the extra power. I used to use a P750ZM for work and fun five years ago and it was a great setup.

@Chaker You are not the only one with issues because of the MP510.

yeah, I also got a mail today saying he is going to put in a Samsung drive. I wonder what the issue is with this combo... I am hoping it is related to this drive specific and it is not an issue with the laptops themself
