I purchased a Fiio E17K DAC to hook up to my new NP9758 (P750DM).

I went with the E17K because I read somewhere, here I think, that the S/PDIF port on the Sager 15 inch is Coaxial and not Optical. However, when I direct sound out the S/PDIF port, no sound is received by the Fiio.

I looked at the Specs on the Clevo site and they say the S/PDIF port on the P750DM is Optical. I asked Sager and they say it is NOT Optical. Doesn't the red light coming out of the port imply that it IS Optical?

I ended up using the E17K with USB and it works fine, but I'd like to know one way or the other if the S/PDIF port is Optical or Coaxial.

    Thanks,

    Kenny

Yes, the red light is the proof you want; hook optical cable to it and if it's blinking rapidly at the other end then optical is functioning alright.

Thing is ... you bought the new "K" model, which ditched optical S/PDIF. Only its predecessor, the E17, had coax and optical. There's a few used E17s still on offer, so might return the K and get the optical version for much less (snatched mine for $73).

    Thank you.

I hooked an Optical cable to it and a red light comes out the other end. Played some sounds, but it doesn't blink.

I wonder why Clevo says it is Optical and Sager says it isn't?

If it wasn't so hard to get to the back of my Receiver, I'd bring the Laptop into the bedroom and hook the Optical up and see if any sound comes out!
