    Hi folks,

I have searched and searched various Forums and Threads and have NOT found a Straight Answer to this Question that I have.

I guess Lot of Laptop builders ( Sager, ...) are supposedly selling you a Laptop with Intel Chipset PM965 and dedicated GPU (nVidia Card) ... and when you get your darn laptop and you run a PC utility check on it and it tells you have a GM965 Chipset .. you go what the heck!

Q1: Is Chipset PM965 "performance" much superior to GM965!?!?
Basically I like to know if I had gotten Chipset PM965 ... would my laptop "Perform" better and faster!?!?
Please put your answer or explanation in a "dummy proof" lingo.

Q2: Would return the darn laptop for just this one goof on Laptop builder part ... you know sending GM965 instead of PM965!?!?

BTW, I have an observation about Sager and !!! ... when you call them and ask ... well, do you know what is the OEM for the 320GB 5400RPM Hard Drive or for the 200GB 7200RPM HDD!?!? So, you can decide which of the 2 evils you should go with ... their response is ... well we are not sure ... I wonder ... don't they know what they are buying from "COMPAL"!!!

Thanks a Bunch in advance for any help ...

    G!

    Wow, that was hard.

Before you blow a gasket and continue further, most programs read laptop chipsets/processors/graphics cards incorrectly. For example, 3DMark06 reads the 8600m GT as an 8600 GS. Furthermore, the OEM for the HDDs in Sager machines is not Compal. Instead, the individual Sager resellers use a variety of HDDs from many different companies, including Seagate, Hitachi, and Western Digital. Do not throw criticism if you don't know what you're talking about.

    GM965 - Integrated GMA X3100 graphics core
    PM965 - PCI-Express x16, which means cards like 8400m, 8600m, 8800m etc.

Simple answer. Even if you do have a GM965 all it means is that it supports either a discrete video card or integrated graphics. Since it is clear that you have a discrete video card...there is absolutely no performance issue, or reason to be concerned.

All you have to do is go to the Intel website and study the specifications for each chipset.

Just so you know, the GM965 is more expensive than the PM965.

Compal has nothing to do with the hard drive. All Sager is telling you is they do not guarantee any particular brand of hard drive will be used. If you want to know what you have, just go into Device Manager and it will tell you.

As is shown by the previous posters, the only difference is the integrated video. Programs like CPUZ may pick it up as GM965 because they are the same chipset, just missing the video component. There will be no performance difference. I am not sure if CPUZ would read it as PM965 on ANY laptop

    Hi folks,

THANKS for all of your answers ...

@ Nirvana ... Thanks for your answer & help!

@ theriko ... Thanks for your help. BTW, I used the Intel Processor Utility program from their site.

    @ Lithus ...

    1) How in the world you found that link ... I googled till my fingers start aching from typing ... THANKS! And after looking at the Intel Thread you posted ... it seems (and as Paladin stated) ... GM965 it seems does everything PM965 does and MORE! So, I will not blow a Gasket ... thanks goodness! :D +rep for your Link.

    2) I was under impression that "Sager" itself Builds the Laptop and then they Ship it to the Reseller (that is what I was told by the Reseller himself) ... so, I thought they would know which kind of Hard Drive they have on hand and plan to slip inot their machine before sending to the Resellers!!!

@ Paladin ... on Hard Drive ... you know I was trying to make a decision between the 320GB 5400RPM and 200GB 7200RPm ... and the Hard Drive "Size = Capacity" was NOT a driving force for me ... just SPEED ... and may be ... may be ... the Brand ... so if Sager would tell me well I have 320GB in this flavor and the 200GB comes in this flavor then I probably would have made a different choice.

From looking at the Sig Lines of these guys that have a HIGH REP (Lithus & thriko) and know what they are talking about (and I personally see their various responses and can tell they make sense ... to me anyway) ... if you notice they all OPTED for the 7200RPM drive ... so one wonders if there is anything to all the research and reading someone does here or at Tom's Hardware and the Benchmarks and all other mumbo jumbo.

    Again Appreciate Ya'll Help & Responses ...

Wishing All of You Bandits & Your Loved Ones A Great & Happy 4th of July!

    G! :) :notworthy:

Did you ever consider they got their 7,200 RPM hard drives before the 320GB hard drive was even available?

Further, both hard drives perform essentially the same, and one will surpass the other depending on what applications you are running. I think you may have over worried it a bit...either one will do just fine for you.

I have the Sager 5793 with the T9300 CPU and the latest version of CPUZ shows the chipset as PM965 and Device Manager will show the model of the hard drive which you can then look up to see the specs. In my case, I have the Seagate Momentus 200GB 7200rpm hard drive.

The 5793 is a great price/benefit performer and the fact that it is user upgradeable makes it even better.

Sager does build the laptops but then it is directly sent to the buyer, not to the reseller. Unless the buyer had bought custom skin painting from Xotic in which then it would go to xotic. But most of the times Order comes from customer to reseller, reseller sends it over to Sager, Sager builds and then ships to customer.
