Ahoy hoy all. First post so be nice :)

I'm currently in the process of replacing the 7950 on my old Sager 9261. It gave up the ghost after a few months of warning. So while I had this thing cracked open I thought I might replace the slowest part of the machine, the old Hitachi who-knows-what it came with. Now I've never even dealt with SSDs before so I have no concept if I can replace the Hitachi with one or what to even look for in one or even who the good makers are and which are the ones to avoid.

With that in mind I guess I should just lay out what I am looking to do with it now so I can get some advise. I plan on giving it to my 12 year old boy to use as his first computer. He will mostly be using it for schoolwork, online research and music. If he keeps his grades up, he can use it for some PC gaming. Since its not my main rig, I'd like to keep costs down below $75 if possiable.

    So, suggestions?

    Thx in advance

I don't think there are any good SSDs below $75..Though you should stick with either Intel,Samsung,or Crucial. Not sure how much an Intel X25-M G2 costs nowadays but give it a try..Take a look at Samsung 470 and Crucial C300 as well. :)

It's going to be tough to find one under $75, but it's possible you can find a relatively cheap 64GB on sale that fits. It may not be the fastest or newest out there, but if you shop around it's not unlikely that you'll find one. That said, you may want to get an optical caddy to keep the HDD as well since 64GB is not going to be much for storage.

If your son is gonna be using for school work and music and such, I'd recommend getting a high performance HDD instead of a pricy SSD..Something like a WD Scorpio black 7200RPM drive or a Seagate Momentus XT Solid State Hybrid drive..

    Belated thanks for the info.

Life got lifey there for a moment.

Anywho, the hybrid drive sounds like a good idea. Might look into that once this thing gets up and running.

To which ...... So the card I bought off ebay apparently isn't compatable with the 9261. I tried to snag another one that specificly came from a 9261 but lost in the bidding. I would LOVE to post up a "Wanted ....." in the for sale forum but the rules might keep me from doing that for a bit. 20 posts isn't much but I honestly have little to truely add to such a well versed community. So its either some inane ramblings from a newb or maybe I can get some help from a moderator? Just want to try and find someone with a 7950go from a 9261 sitting around collecting dust.

Either way, again thanks and will be seeing more of you all soon.

Thanks for making my first post feel welcome
