Initially I was going to hijack the msata thread, but didn't want to disrupt the conversation there with my question.

I mainly want an SSD for running my OS, potentially Adobe's Premier Elements and a few games. I wouldn't use it for much else, I don't think.

    My two options are:
    1. Crucial M4 128GB SSD 550/175 Mbs Read/Write + ODD Conversion Kit for Extra Hard Disk [500GB 7200rpm HDD] (optical drive) + external Bluray player. This costs me $340 + the price of a bluray player (recommendations welcome).
    2. Other option is: 500GB 7200rpm Hard Disk Drive + OCZ Nocti 120GB SSD 280/260 Mbs Read/Write or Crucial M4 128GB SSD mSATA 500/175 Mbs Read/Write + internal BR player (more convenient for me). This comes to between $260 and $310 for me - so it's already much cheaper and more convenient.

I am ordering from logical blue one at this stage - Logical Blue One - Horize P150EM Clevo Notebook

Thoughts? How much more performance can I expect from the first option?

    Thanks in advance.

Go with the 2nd option, it makes more sense for your usage patterns, and I've heard the mSATAs have better IOPS.

One thing... make sure you truly evaluate your storage needs. Some people think they use 200-300 gb when they truly could easily Do with a 128 gb SSD with an external HDD for any other misc long term storage.

Think about how often you use your optical drive. I did the same thing when thinking up the rig I will be getting for my girl here in about 6 weeks. All said and done, I'll be going the SSD/HDD combo with an external bluray player. Really the only time we use optical drives is if watching a movie or installing software. The nice part is when I finally get to purchase my laptop... which is either going to be a 170EM, 370EM, or if pricing doesn't hold me back the DTR 270WM or whatever it will be named. Either way its going to be my main computer for college work, gaming, CAD work, etc. I'm quite happy I'll be buying hers first and pushing my purchase off a few months. Gives me time and the rest of the world time to sort out this ATI/Nvidia stuff! lol

Also make sure you remember the mSATA will be running at SATA II speeds, instead of the SSD SATA III!

120/128GB is enough for me at the moment. Maybe even a little more, but 60GB is probably a touch too small. I would love to have more, but alas...

I'm aware of the SATA II vs SATA III issue - hence I'm trying to gather a proper list of pros and cons. As it stands, I would be stretching my budget to afford option one and losing some convenience. If the gains were large enough it would a consideration.
