What Speedy said. Do a fresh install of Win7 onto a clean formatted SSD. Win7 will "know" that it's being installed on a SSD, and will install - or skip - necessary or unecessary modules/settings. If you port a clone from a spin disk, it won't, and you will have to repair some stuff later. Often with not so optimal results.

Before installing, check your BIOS to see that your disk mode is set to AHCI.

In addition, I have a few links for you, on how to tweak SSD's and Win7 further for best performance.

SSD Tweaks and Optimizations in Windows 7 - Windows 7 Forums

Guide * Windows 7 Ultimate Tweaks & Utilities * - (includes a section specifically dealing with SSD tweaks)

SSD Tweak Utility 1.6.1 - TechSpot Downloads

This last one is a good little tweak utility for those who's not keen on reading all that text, and just want the most important SSD/Win7 tweaks done.

It is not necessary to follow all these tweaks, but some of them makes very good sense, and will enhance performance. Some of them deals mostly with reducing SSD "wear", and is not really that important anymore, with the newest and best SSD's on the market now - ie the Intels, Crucials, and Sandforce 1200 based ones.

Btw, Speedy - this thread is becoming huge, and competes with the owners thread for attention - isn't it better now, to have only 1 main thread for the X7200? I feel the PSU "issue" is just as well served if we implement it into the X7200 owner's thread, really.

Well the owners thread is boring because is nothing new to be exited like new vantage scores new benchmarks but at the same time this thread is boring because there is no fix yet for the PSU issues so they can merge this thread to the owners lounge and this will be the same a big boring thread"

i don't own the machine no more but i really hope for the current owners a fix for the PSU issues but not a patch only like they talking about with the PSU splitter :)

i remembered that there was once i was on the Alienware threads they did mention about steps of which drivers to install first, and the problem is that i have no idea how to safely pull the drivers on one folder,

I'm planning to have my 500GB Seagate as data storage (the OS and drivers will be in there with my notebook) and the SSD as OS and Important software for fast boot.

im getting myself an Samsung 470 series SSD, i will read up this links soon
its coming to 1.40am at my side. ;)

    Thanks for the links!

Oh i almost forgot, when i gotten my new SSD should i format it on the laptop first or i could just plug in and install de windows?

If you are too lazy to search for the order, the user/service manual has everything in it.

Win7 will format the SSD when you install it anyway, if it's not allready.
And will also find most of the drivers you need automatically, if you're connected to the net. For Intel SSD's, it's perfectly fine to use the default Win7 sata driver, in order to have the TRIM function of the SSD - what you need for the Samsung SSD, I don't know ... google it. Samsung SSD's are not considered to be top notch, but will certainly be much faster than any regular spin disk.

it's called micro stuttering and is prelavent with multi-gpu solutions. i dealt with this garbage since my d900c sli in 2008. this is the reason i have not gone back to sli.

i made a video of it. it shows stutter @ 30fps when normally this is a smooth framerate. first run is with the single ati card. @ 58 seconds the sli run starts and you notice the stuttery mess that it is.

YouTube - BEWARE nvidia fermi cards are stuttering despite good frame rates / ATI HD 5870 vs. GTX 460 SLI

nope. it's like dithering from top to bottom. it's definently a vsync issue. from side to side tearing down the screen.

games that do that require vsync and it locks the sync of the refresh rate

Analog television - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    and from the above link.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Page_tearing

this is what i am having. screen tearing/page tearing due to vsync. :)

no psu issues what so ever.. but haven't begun the ocing yet.

yup, probably is. i suppse i could force vsync.. but that makes you lose fps.. as it usually locks at the lowest avg fps when you do that.

wayackwhen... i was playing jherico.. *cool game :) and i was getting lotsa tearing.. i forced vsync via nvidia control panel. custom profile.

this fixed it but locked my framerate at 30fps. no lower no higher.. and boy oh boy.. if there was a detailed scene with lots of crap goin on.. it wasn't pretty.. it's just easier on the eyes is all.

    an annoyance ya dig?

So i have been reading a lot about the 7280, but cant find a comparison of the SLI 460m to single 480m or SLI 480ms anywhere, also i see some people are very unhappy with the screen quality - not ideal for photo editing, but i will mostly be gaming, has there been any news yet of a new powersupply?

Im planning on buying one as soon as tomorrow... probably from PCtorque as they will accept a Aussie Mastercard for payment to a US address and this will expediate shipping

    - i plan on buying the 950, and waiting until the 990 extreme comes out, but
not sure to go with a single 480 ar dual 460ms!!!!

It seems that the dual 460m has the same performance as a single 480m. It appears that the power supply is enough for some gaming. IT will be useful to know which combinations of cpu and video are stable.

At least one combination is reported stable.

This is a hexacore and a single 480 GPU. With no overclock it seems to be stable. I do not know about 460 SLI because the information about the TDP is confsing.

Yes thats the problem i cant find any reviews with the 460m's to confirm if they perform, my preferance would be to wait and get the 470's, but the AUS$ to USD$ is good but dropping and if i order now, i will get free shipping home via a mate flying home, i was hoping for someone who actually has this rig with 460's is SLI and or on there own to comment???

Believe me i have been looking for some time....

Please help ASAP if you can.

What about the performance 460m SLi vs single 480m?
What it the TDP for 480m? In wikipedia it is listed as 100W, but it mentions that 100 W is for the total slot. The 460m is given as 40-50W.

384 shaders @ 675/1350 vs. 352 shaders @ 425/850. If SLi is (well) supported by the game (which is the case with all newer games), GTX 460M SLi will perform better. However, GTX 470M Sli is the real winner. 576 shaders easily overclockable to ~675/1350, that would mean performance equal to a GTX 480.

TDP for GTX 480M is 100W (whole board), GTX 460M is probably 60-65W for the whole board.

I was wondering what's the latest situation regarding the Power Supply and Heating issues with the x7200 ?

Especially after reading the latest review on Hothardware.com  :

Is there already a solution and what's actual status and progress of it ?

I was seriously considering buying one, but the more I read about it, the more I get woried and confused about this whole issue...

I'm sure the heating issue is just a single case. No one has reported heat issues here or anywhere.
The power issue is pretty old. Unless you hardcore oc or multitask (ie coding blu ray and running 3 copies of crysis at once) it should be fine. If you really need extra power, clevo is (maybe) coming out with an adapter that connects to PSUs for extra bump.

Last night my PSU shut off a few times while playing Crysis Warhead. On 2 different levels towards the end, one was the cave level. Playing at 1080p with max settings (No AA) i was getting about 60-70fps (due to it being an in-door level) and it shut off quite a few times in that level. And yes that was the only thing i was doing.

    No overclocking.

About 40 FPS average, if I remember correctly, but playing that indoor tunnel level was very enjoyable at that FPS. Wish I could overclock...

    Hello All

I have been following this forum for a while now but haven't decided to register till just recently.

I've just received my x7200 two days ago, and currently have had no problems with it.

Does anyone on the forum know the maximum current the computer can draw before the PSU shuts off?
Oh and I mean the current from the PSU to the laptop not the current from the wall outlet to the PSU.

    My configuration is below.

Thanks babyhemi, is this the power that the PSU actually supplies to the computer?
Since I've read the same number somewhere but I remember that it was the power drawn from the wall but I could be mistaken.

So if your number is correct 18.5 amps gets fed into the laptop, anyone know if this is the maximum rated input current of the laptop or can it handle higher.

Wow. Nice configuration, especially the SSD's. I think it is possible to give it more amps, but you will need a power adapter which can do that. On the forum there was a thread about a custom adapter, but unfortunately it was not available for sale. I guess we need to know what is the max TDP of the motherboard

Well I am currently designing a simple circuit that will allow me to bridge 2 of the 300W PSU and provide even current sharing between them.

This will theoretically supply up to 578W of power to the laptop, I'm just concerned that the X7200's motherboard is not capable of handling that kind of current which can get up to 29 - 30 Amps.

Only if you buy it all as a complete package.

I got the SSD separate at a relatively low price.
Only paid about $1,300 for all three of them.
