    Hi,

Are there any Sagers/Clevos 17" laptops available with Penryn yet?

I'm ready to buy an Uber laptop with:
    17" 1920 X 1200 screen
    2 - 200G HD in Raid-1
    4 GIG memory
    Windows Vista for Business 64-bit

Quad processors (I need the speed for multiple programs and power hungry games)

    Dual SLI 8800's

Please let me know where I can get my hands on one within the next 30 days or so.

    Thanks in advance,

    Douglas

You can take a look at the Sager 5792/5793.

    It can be equipped with:
    -WUXGA
    -PENRYN
    -4GB RAM
    -Vista Business 64

The only thing it does not support is Raid, SLI or Quad CPU. The Sager NP9262 is the only machines that supports Quad & SLI 8800's. :(

    Hi Justin,

    Thanks for the info.

Because of my work I really need the peace of mind of having RAID-1.
Plus the processing power of Quad processors and the new SLI 8800s.

Will any Penryns be installed in any Sagers/Clevos in the future?

Does any one else know of any laptops (any brand) that would have what I need?

    Regards,

    Douglas

The Penryn Yorkfield (45nm) Quad core processors such as the Q9450 and Q9550 are due to be released by Intel sometime in Feb or March.

Based on their specs, it appears these *should* work in the Sager NP9262, although a BIOS update may be required or possibly even a motherboard update (NP9263 perhaps).

I would say if you can wait until April, Sager may have exactly what you are looking for.

Guys, thank you for your help.

It's my understanding I'll need to wait until after April to get what I need.

It's just too bad that it's not available now. I don't want to drop $4-$5K on a platform that will be 1 generation back, in just a few months.

If all things are the same, the Penryn should last for 1-2 years just like the Santa Rosa now used in the Sagers/Clevos, before a new and better motherboard/chip set comes out.

    Regards,

    Douglas

    Hi Mecha,

I do want a Penryn, but it must be a Quad and have Raid-1.

Just getting a regular Penryn without any of the other stuff (Quad processor/Raid-1), it's not much of a deal compared to Sony's Vaio, or IBM's Lenovo. Even the Alienware Fx's got the Penryn now and they do have RAID-1 capability.

Main reason I'm leaning toward a Sager/Clevo is because once I get what I want on it. Even if something newer comes out 1-2 years later, it should be easy to upgrade.
Getting a Sager with the Santa Rosa platform, and later switching to a Penryn, will cost me around $700-$1500 in the future. That's on top of the $4-$5K I would already have paid. Makes sense just to wait a few months then.
    That's my thinking...

    Regards,

    Douglas

No Alienware laptop has Penryn. We are talking about laptops here, not desktops. And yes, this Clevo is the only laptop in the world to have a desktop CPU at the moment, from the Core 2 Duo line. Wait a few months to get it.

I'm just curious as to what work load would generate the type of horsepower you claim it need, abstravel. It sure seems to me that a desktop would be a better solution. The laptop that you're describing is going to have abysmal battery life so you're going to need to be tethered to a wall outlet. Also, just about anything requiring the graphics power that you're spec'ing seems to me to would be better served on a larger monitor.

    Hi guys,

My bad on the Alienware info. I misread their coming soon, as "now available."

I need a laptop with Uber power because I travel alot, and also move from room to room in my house. Battery life is of no concern, since I'll always have it plugged at the hotel room or home.

As to the power needed, I use Eudora Pro, 3-4 Explorer screens, TRAMS (that's a database program for travel agencies), Photoshop, Adobe professional (design/create pdfs), and Dreamweaver.
Anyone that uses any 3-4 of the programs above will know that even the fastest processors will bog down and slow down your working speed (specially when you have an antivirus program running...which you must now a days) By the way, don't tell me NAV is slower than Zone Alarm, or that McAfee or Kasperky is better - they're all slow as HELL, and mother*ucking CPU hungry bastards (but you gotta have one running or you'll pay for it in the long run). I've used all on our office computers.

And if any of the above programs crash (which they do from time to time!) you'll also realize that whatever you were working on will go ** SPOOF ** and be lost forever.

I'm not one that likes to retype or start from scratch when working on things. It's just not fun.

Then, on to gaming... If I need an Uber beast for work, ain't no sense to let it sit idle with the great games out there!

Hope this helps in understanding why I need what I need. In the past I've had Dell 8200 and 9300 (topped off), and Toshiba SP-105 (topped off).

    Regards,

    Douglas

Not getting tired of this joke yet? Still think the word "upgrade" is hilarious?I've seen you laugh away in so many posts now..

..I'm suspecting that you will tell me that you will keep on laughing until all the "idiots" that think the 9262 is upgradeable will come to their senses. :)

If you meant desktop quad cpu, then yea, the clevo d901 is the only one.

    Yes, it does, my mistake.
Alienware will not have a quad core in a notebook until May-June or maybe a few months later. That will be a mobile quad core and will cost around 1000$.

I've read some articles about the coming quad core mobile CPUs. It seems they have a very different socket, so no notebook on the market today can be upgraded with a quad core mobile CPU.

In theory it is possible to update the bios of the Clevo D900/D901 to accommodate for the Penryn quad core desktop CPUs, but it seems Clevo will not do so. Instead there may be a new motherboard or even a completely updated D900/D901?

Yes, this next quarter (Q2) Intel will release a mobile quad core which will cost around 1000$. How many times do I have to repeat myself?
I believe Clevo needs a new motherboard for these new CPUs.

"Intel in Early 2009 will release the second iteration of Nehalem processors for desktops and laptops (first iteration for laptop chips). The mobile version will be Clarksfield 45nm (Centrino / Core 3 Quad)." This is from Wikipedia, though I believe it also might be Q4.
Their first quad core will be released this next quarter or maybe Q3, but it will be an extreme CPU. Not quite mainstream.

I wonder if the new Quad core Mobile CPUs will be as fast as the current Quad core desktop CPUs (Q6700).

I believe that the QX9650, Penryn based, should be faster than any new Quad core Mobile CPU coming out in the next year or so.

If so, would anyone recommend waiting until the QX9650 is available in the Sager/Clevo units?

Quad-core processors won't help with games, they're almost universally single-threaded.

That is not entirely correct... especially in the current era of games.

Previous (pre-2006) games did fine with a single core.

The latest games have shown to be quite CPU intensive, as well as utilizing multi-cores.

The Unreal Engine 3 (Bioshock, Unreal Tournament 3, Gears of Wars, etc..) has shown to be a highly optimized graphics engine to take full advantage of all the cores that you have in your system to use them for rendering and physics.

Even the over-hyped CryEngine2 (Crysis and Far Cry 2) is utilizing the CPU, the faster the better, the more cores the better... however it is not fully utilizing the CPU (only 60-80% load of the CPU on all cores), as compared to the Unreal Engine 3 (that pull 100% of load of CPU on all cores).

The future of games will be multi-threaded, and the more cores the better. Its not just going to be the GPU and RAM to be the bottleneck anymore.

But other than games, quad-cores are amazing for media work/rendering/editing.... for audio, video, and 3D work. And quad-cores are awesome for ripping and converting.

Those will be Penryn CPUs, so you should compare them with the current normal desktop Penryn quad cores Q9300, Q9450 and Q9550.

Yes sure, Extreme CPUs are always the fastest of the bunch.

Then you can wait until eternity because here will never be an extreme quad core in a notebook. These things run far too hot. However you will see the normal Penryn quad cores in the D900/D901 in a couple of months.

Not true. It's not the heat, it's the power consumption. Clevos never had problems with overheating (this D901C). The reason why you never saw a quad core CPU earlier in this laptop is because they used to have a 105W TDP, while the current generation has a 95W TDP (last ones work without damaging the motherboard). The extreme CPUs have much higher TDPs, this being the reason for not having them. From what I can tell the D901C will have no problem handling a Q9550 (2.83Ghz) CPU.

That's almost the same thing. All power is converted into heat. I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem to supply the electric energy to the CPU, but getting rid of the heat would be a problem. You don't want a charred motherboard.

    = more heat
That is what I wrote, normal Penryn quad cores are no problem.

I know there is a tight connection, but I was saying that the heat gets dissipated quite well by the D901C, so this is not the reason for the CPUs not being there, but rather about how much power they need.
Heat has nothing to do with the D901C. It seems that it's limitation is supplying the power to the CPU, 95W for a laptop being too much. Even so, more than 95W can damage the motherboard (especially the 105W TDUs).

That was Sager`s word on the quad cores, they did not use it at first due to the TDP. Issue fixed by a mobo revision.
The 926x will probably be using quad extremes also if they`re going to make them less power hungry.

On the 5793, at first, there will be a single quad core, an extreme edition, but later in the year other CPUs will be released and used.
On the 9262 as soon as possible, maybe even this month. I believe though that this laptop needs a new motherboard to support them.

I really hope the 9262 with Penryn Quad core comes soon.
That setup with dual 8800 in SLI should kick some mean beans for at least 1-2 years before it's considered a "modest" laptop again.

That new Skulltrail motherboard would come in handy.
Stick one Quad chip, or make it two Quad chips for 8 cores.
Later when the new Octo (8 core) chips come in, take one out or put 2 Octo cores into the motherboard for a lightning 16 Core laptop.

Now, if the Skulltrail is really that upgradable, as explained in http://asia.cnet.com/crave/2008/02/06/intel-s-eight-core-skulltrail-platform-ahead-of-game/ that makes one AWESOME expandable motherboard.
