I set it so that closing the lid and pushing the sleep button will sleep the laptop, but when I close the lid, the fans go on like its about to sleep, but then it stays on and when I open the lid, I'm at the login screen again. When I hit the sleep button, the display turns off like its going to sleep but then it doesn't sleep and when I move the mouse, I'm back at the login screen. I am able to sleep it once in a while, but it's messed up more than it's worked. Sometimes, hibernating does the same thing (seems like it will turn off but goes to login screen). What's wrong?

I had closing the lid to sleep. Should I change it to hibernate?

I set it so the power button hibernates my laptop. When I tried to hibernate last night, the screen shut down and it hibernated for about 1 second then it started up again without me touching anything. This happened twice and I eventually closed the lid and it slept.

Also, when I press the sleep button, the screen also turns off, but immediately turns back on to the log in screen.

I changed everything but the sleep button to hibernate. I left the button for sleep in case I ever need it. However, any idea as to why it comes back to the login screen right after it turns off the display?

It goes back to login for security purposes. Windows will do that unless if your user account has no password.

Sleep is different from hibernate... are you sure it didn't go to sleep?

No, I mean when I make it go to sleep or hibernate it, the display shuts off as if its about to sleep/hibernate, but then sometimes it will come right out of it and bring me to the login screen without me touching anything. Yes I know the differences because it has worked before and it brings me to the login because my setting has it set that it requires a password on wake up. However, I never woke it up.

ah I was wondering what that was for. It's Fn/F1 on mine. Thanks for clearing that up.

Since I asked about that button, what do the two buttons on the left by the USB ports off of the keyboard do?

Bump, it still turns off display and then turns back on right away. I cannot get it to sleep.
