Hello,
I recently received my sager laptop and I thought I should let everyone know thhat the touchpad doesn't work fully. The "supposed" scroll area to the right side of the pad doesn't move the cursor, as if it is trying to scroll, but it doesn't scroll either. I contacted Sager about this and this is a known defect in all their laptops. I'm very dissapointed to hear it. Besides that, it's a great laptop.

Are you using Windows XP or Windows Vista? I've heard issues with the side scroll area with Vista before.
-
Vista, the person I contacted at Sager said that all the models he tested it on also had the same issue.
-
Sounds like no driver for Vista has been created to me. Does not seem like a big issue that Sager can't solve easily.
-
Wait, did he say that all models had this problem regardless of OS, or was this problem Vista-specific?
-
The sager support told me that it was a known defect for the 2090. He didn't mention OS. I tried to install synaptic drivers and I can now scroll, though even at fastest the mousepad isn't as sensitive.
-
Known Defect? How dare they sell a defective product. Fired! (or at least dock their pay)
-
noooooo, now i cant scroll comfortably
....ill be using a mouse most of the time anyways. Or ill install those drivers mentioned above.
-
I've installed the included drivers (I'm on XP 32-bit) and the scrolling works. The problem though, is that if you enable the option to disable the touchpad while you're typing, the scroll stops working. I assume that the scrolling is interpreted as "typing" and thus after scrolling about 1cm, it disables itself for a second then works again then disables itself for a second, etc.
One functionality that I have noticed though is the "semi-multitouch" capabilities of it. (If you enable it) Tapping with one finger is left click, two fingers is middle click and three fingers is right click. I belive it is enabled by default, but I don't remember. While the touchpad only has two "real" buttons, pressing them at the same time emulates a middle click.
I'm usually on a mouse anyways, just thought I'd mention these things. -
That's quite interesting!
-
Hmm, its odd because I dont see those options with the default drivers. I'll check again though.
-
What purpose does middle click serve, anyway?
-
well in modern browsers middle click generaly opens new tabs.
-
Ok wait.. this is definitely defective and was sold?!! or is it simply an issue of defective drivers?? Has anybody else noticed this problem and a way to fix it?
-
Is the scroll feature apt to work in Ubuntu? Even with the xorg synaptics package?
-
No its not a hardware defect... Its just a driver issue, should be fixed soon (If not yet fixed by 3rd party). The scrolling on the side of the touchpad is only software... no worries!
-
yea, no need to worry, probably will be fixed pretty soon.

Now, I do not have the machine yet so I am inferring based on the information I gathered from all around but it seems that the Linux kernel also has a problem with Elantech touchpads. Apparently, Linux misidentifies the touchpad which then results in the rest of the OS thinking that the touchpad does not handle the synaptic protocol. So the touchpad works but advanced features are not available. Here's the bug report:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.22/+bug/123775 -
Touchpad works fine without any specific drivers, the included Elantech just gives more options. Haven't played with scrolls or whatnot, but it should work.
-
The scrolling works fine on both linux and windows. It's just their weird glitch with disable after typing on windows that's messed up. Also, I can confirm that linux misidentifies the touchpad as synaptic. It works fine, but you can't do any of the advanced features, like disable touchpad after typing.
Yes, that functionality is very important to me, I keep accidentally hitting the touchpad when I type, and with tap to click, it goes crazy clicking everywhere. I wouldnt mind if it just moved, but the clicking is very annoying. -
When I went to XP Pro yesterday, I found that only Vista32 KTP driver worked to enable scrolling, BUT KTP.EXE PROCESS WAS KILLING THE CPU!!!!!
When you swith users w/o loging off each user keeps the KTP.EXE process running with 50% CPU time...I noticed a lot of lag on everything I was doing so I checked task manager....and WOW.
Maybe Vista users should check how CPU is doing under that driver!!!
I am trying synaptics driver to see if it helps....Elantech software even looks cheap, I wouldn't expect better. -
weird.. mine scrolled fine without installing KTP.. i had to install it to get disable when typing which was just flippin annoying me (without that feature). However scrolling is now shot! scrolling in certain windows works fine.. firefox, google earth, and many other applications don't work with scrolling at all... I now have to make a choice between having scroll that works, or being able to type without worry of random mouse clicking
-
but do you switch users or it's just a single user PC?
For me it worked fine until the second user's logon. -
My sager 2090 touchpad works just as it is supposed to. The right side scrolls when i move my finger up and down on the internet or Word and I am using Vista.
-
Word 2007 u can scroll with? All of office 2007 im having issues with scrolling on touchpad.
-
I have an ifl 90 the same machine as the sager, it also suffers from the same problem with the touchpad. The basic vista drivers work fine with the exception of disable tapping when typing. I agree it is an annoyance. The computer runs slower with KTP installed, boot-up takes longer, typing is fine but no scrolling in microsoft office programs, word, exel, outlook, etc. Firefox buggy. Similar problems occurred with the previous compal model using the elantech pad. There never was a fix provided.
