Hey I've got this Memorex HDD right now (Ultra Travel Drive, got it for $80 from 250) anyways, when I plug it in initially it detects the connection as usb 2.0, but then changes to 1.1... how do i check what the file transfer speed actually is? and if it's 1.1, how do i make it realize it's 2.0?

Ok I fixed it lol, but I recently discovered that I can now only use the drive in the original port! lol if I try to switch, it will not detect anything... Does Vista just make me have to wait over a half hour before it installs it or is there a workaround?

This is not normal as you can use the drive in all ports... Weird. At USB 2.0, expect transfer rate at about 5MB/s. That's one MP3 file every 1-2 seconds. Well, at USB 1.1, you WILL know it lol. @ 11Mb/s it's about 100KB/s...

The thing is the Mass storage driver is now pretty standard in XP and above. If you switch ports, Vista should detect it wihout a hitch. Try uninstalling the device in the device manager (when the disk is connected) and reconnect it. That's usually how I proceed. Once I ended up uinstalling all my USB line because it was acting up lol. BUT do this at your own risk.

Mhh...USB2 performance for external HDDs should be around 20-25MB/s under normal conditions. Are you really getting 5MB/s with yours?
I tried FW on mine and it's just a little above USB2 (25-26MB/s sustained).
If your external drive supports FireWire, try that better...it has faster sustained transfer rates than USB2 and your 2090 has a FW port.

Which firewire is it in the NP2090? Firewire 400 or Firewire 800? So I can determine which WD MyBook to get.
