When I turn on my 3880, you can hear the hard drive spinning up but the screen is blank. If I try the function key, you can occasionally see the windows log in screen for a second. I've also tried playing with the contrast. Does this mean that the screen will need to be replaced? Is this something that can be easily done?

depends on experience, does sound like ur screen wires might be loose or ur screen is broken.

is it like a BLACK colored screen? like you know its on, but its just showing black? Or is the screen just as dark as if the computer was completely off? and wat do u mean by you can sometimes see the login screen? Your problem can mainly be answered as to WHAT TYPE of black is your screen? "the computer is completely off" black? or "its got the backlight goin on as if you told your monitor to go black while it was on" black?

If your screen is dim, you can check the mechanism that dims your LCD when you close the lid. On the 3880 I think it is above the keyboard. (you will notice a piece on the bezel of the LCD that pushes into the switch above the keyboard) We have seen sometimes where dust or other debris can cause it to be depressed (as if your LCD is closed) and dim the display.

You can also try to hook up an external display and see if that works.

I've been using this laptop hooked up to another monitor for awhile now. I've limited the problem to either the screen needing to be replace or the inverter. Is there an easy way to test if it is the inverter? I don't want to buy another screen if it's the inverter thats bad.
