I put in an order for a Sager 5125 but it appears the 1080 screens are back ordered. After configuring my laptop it appears my order is around $1200. So since it looks like I'll have to wait for my laptop I have a question. For the same amount of money I can get an Asus G73. What are the advantages of the Sager vs the Asus?

    Sager 5125:
    Intel® Core i5-540
    4GB DDR3 1066MHz Dual Channel Memory (2 SODIMMS)
    500GB 7200RPM (Serial-ATA II 300 - 16MB Cache)
    nVidia GT 330M 1024MB PCI-Express GDDR3 DX10 with Optimus™ Technology
    Intel® Ultimate-N 6300 - 802.11A/B/G/N Wireless LAN Module
    Sound Blaster Compatible 3D Audio
15.6” FHD 16:9 LED Backlit Wide screen (1920x1080) Super Clear Glare Type Screen
    No O/S

    Asus G73:
    Intel® Core™ i7-720QM processor
    6GB DDR3
500GB Serial ATA hard drive (7200 rpm)
    ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870
    17.3" LED-LCD 1600 x 900 resolution
3D Audio with EAX Advanced HD 4.0
    Win 7 Home

Asus G73 will own the NP5125 for gaming, but will most likely stink when it comes to battery life in comparison. I've also heard that the G73 gets quite hot under intense load/heavy gaming. Can't be sure of that.

I guess what it comes down to is what you need it to do, as well as screen size. Do you want to play games with awesome graphics settings but suffer a terrible battery life, or do you want a great battery life but play games with medium-low graphics settings at low resolutions?

Also: 1920x1080 on a 15.6" screen is most likely going to induce a lot of squinting. I'd get the lower resolution screen if possible, unless you need the screen space for heavy multitasking.

Sager NP5125 is not a gaming laptop like G73.

G73, aside from its obvious 17" screen, is clearly heavier and bulkier than Sager, but packing more power for gaming. GT 330 M is a mid-class graphics card, while 5870 is still on top of the benchmark board.
Radeon 5870 also can get very hot. In some gaming, you can expect the temp goes between 82C - 85C normal, or 90C - 95C on very intense gaming

The model you're ordering have 1600x900 screen resolution, which is, IMO, slightly lower than what usually a 17" laptop should have.
You can also order Sager NP5125 with Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid HDD which is the best HD out there for transitioning from normal HD to SSD (you have semi/close to SSD speed with high capacity like normal HD).

Core i5-540 runs slightly better for any application that doesn't fully utilize quad-core.

Yeah, the g73 for that price range is only bestbuy model, which is not as packed as full verion of g73, lower quality/resolution screen, no bluetooth, lower quality camera, not sure what else. there's also a thread that it comes with 2 diffeernt screens fyi
depends what you want, can't tell what's better for you

I'm definitely not really interested in a massive 17" laptop. I like to game but it's not my primary focus for this laptop. I have a gaming system at home that I can use. The laptop is mostly for Work, school, occasional gaming, and movie watching. Also, when I use it at work it's on the A/C plug all day.

Well I take your saying "occasional gaming" meaning the odd emulator or two (nothing insane), then yeah the NP5125 would definitely suit you very well. I say this because you mentioned having a dedicated gaming machine at home (assuming it's a PC gaming machine). Unless you're a hardened gaming fanatic, I'd go the portable route and get the NP5125. Plus since you will be using the machine at work, the NP5125 is not flashy and does not draw attention. It's more suitable for a work and school environment.

Oh, have you considered bumping up the CPU a little on the NP5125? Just curious.

The 5125 I have configured right now is at the threshold of my price limit. When I say "occasional gaming" I mean that perhaps when it's slow at work (rare) I might launch a game off Steam. I can play L4D on my current laptop with all graphics down. I can even play BC2 in a window.

Asus should be punished for not providing Full HD screens not rewarded.
On a 17" laptop anything less than 1920x1200 is a total disgrace.

The G73 is generally available with a 1920x1080 screen, that must be a cheaper version or something.

Get NP5125 definitely. IMO, G73 is too bulky and heavy for commuting to work/school. And for gaming, it's not that bad. You can get some decent FPS on recent games with sacrificing a bit of visual quality. Not to mention you can overclock your GPU for extra gaming performance boost.
