A friend of mine has a Sager 5720 with the 7800GTX Go that has starting to fail (graphic artifacts, etc.). Been searching with no luck for a replacement avenue (not upgrade).
He's sent it to Sager once already and for ~$200 they did a "refurb" on his existing card - didn't replace it with a refurb, just refurbed his existing card. That was November and now it's having the same problem. He would rather spend another $$$ on a working replacement, but Sager said they don't have them...
Any ideas???
TIA,
Steve

its having the same problem....?
when was the last time that he cleaned out the fans and vents thoroughly...?
if never, then thats why.
1) remove battery
2) remove/unscrew the panels on the bottom of the notebook to get to fans and vents
3) use flashlight to look through vents for the dust
4) go outside, get some compressed air (cans or compressor) and give the vents a good airing out all directions (concentrating on the fans and vents)
5) go get some Q-tips and swab the fan blades and the area around it
6) then go do a second airing with compressed air (all directions again focusing on the fans and vents) to push out the dust that was dislodged from the Q-tips
7*) Now go use the flashlight again and look through the vents (shine the flashlight from the fan, you look through the other end) for anymore dust clogs.
8) Then start up the notebook... and let the fans cycle up (use the Fan Toggle at max speed) to push out any other dust that might have been stuck.
If all goes well you should be able to close up the notebook and...
you're done.
*repeat this step until its cleaned out.
Thats pretty much it.
Just make sure to do this every two-three months... it should take about 15-20min per cleaning if you want to be thorough.

Gaming notebooks are a new thing, you must realize that you have to take some extra care of them over typical use notebooks:
1) Battery: to maintain the longevity of any rechargeable battery
- you must NEVER overcharge it [especially for long durations of time] by keeping it plugged into AC
- when it reaches 100% you should unplug it and let it discharge to 5-15%, then plug it back to power
- OR you can just charge it to 50%+ and remove the battery and store in cool place.. not the fridge [remember to use it occasionally 3-4 time a year to charge and discharge it].
2.) Heat: to prevent a healthy notebook from overheating
- ALWAYS use the notebook on a clean, hard & flat surface
- RECOMMENDED to be used on a notebook cooler... namely the Zalman ZM-NC1000 or ZM-NC2000
- check your fans underneath occasionally (at least once a month or two) for any dust clogs [clean them out with Q-tips and air cans/compressors]
- ALWAYS monitor the temps (CPU, GPU, HDD, etc..) to watch for fluctuations, which would indicate overheating by dust usually
(for Clevo notebooks) use the Fan Toggle to switch all fans to Max Speed when gaming and such.
By doing these simple things, your entire system will easily last for more than 3 years. -
Yeah, we cleaned it out earlier this morning... Just a couple little fuzzies/lint. No big deal, but good suggestion as always.
He's really looking to just get it working again and unload it on eBay. What do you think he could get for it working 100%?? I told him probably $800-1000... -
there is a right and a wrong way in cleaning the fans/vents.
the best way find out if it was cleaned correctly, is to use a flashlight and shine it through the vents (from the fans) and look through the other side and see if there is any dust clogged.

does he monitor temps?
because you should always do that when you have a gaming notebook
he can get another M570A videocard module, just contact:
- Eurucom... they have stock of parts for Clevo notebooks

He can just sell it as is now for at least $800 on eBay. -
Thanks, Gophn! I guess I forgot to read this post back in March...
An update - He got a Sager 95 something (the one with the desktop P4) for free due to dead mobo. It has a 6800 in it and he has swapped the card out and it boots up, but the display looks shifted and split in quarters. Is there something in the BIOS that could be changed or would the BIOS need to be flashed?
As I'm typing this, he's calling Eurocom to ask about the availability of a replacement 7800GTX... Again Gophn, thanks very much! -
Well, he had a mixed experience....
Eurocom tech support was very helpful and tried working with him for a while (diagnosing the problem, asking about the 6800 and video BIOS, making suggestions, etc.). He said Eurocom even seemd more helpful than Sager when he talked to them about the original refub.
The replacement 7800GTX from Eurocom is $545. He said after spending the cash for the refurb, he just didn't see that as very cost effective for a 5720/m570A when it is still just a Pentium M with a 7800GTX...
Other ideas? (He's considering just using it as an ICS gateway or dropping on eBay...) -
No thats not cost effective at all.
The previous generation Clevo videocard modules are ridiculously expensive.
You can find the modules for much cheaper in forums, craigslist, and ebay... but it will take patience to find it. -
Thanks again, Gophn.
Do you think anyone here would have a BOIS for the 5720 to make the 6800 card work?? -
VBIOS or motherboard BIOS?
-
I'm not sure what it would take for it to work, if it is even possible...
I guess we're just grabbing at straws... -
here is the BIOS:
http://www.eurocom.com/support/drivers/bios/m570a_bios.htm -
Thanks, Gophn! You're a great resource!
I'll pass this along to him and get him to try it! -
Okay, I'd figure I'd get on here and actually post. I'm the guy with the busted video card in the Sager 5720-C/M570A. I'd like to thank you guys for your help. I contacted Eurocom and as Sickpup stated, they were way overpriced. He did not however sell the 6800 series so he didn't even have a video BIOS for one. I have also been in contact with Sager and I am still waiting for a response to see if they will send me a bios. I did however find a bios online at:
http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/...ufacturer=&model=6800+Go&interface=&memSize=0
but I am unsure if that one will work. I'm looking to see if I can find one pulled directly off a Clevo 6800 if at all possible. Maybe the real quesiton I need to be finding out is how/where the bios is stored and if it can in fact really be upgraded separetly from the main bios. -
Another question to go with SnakEyes:
What are the "sister" models for the 5720/M570A? Like from Widow PC, Voodoo, etc. from the Clevo FAQ here... Maybe he would have some lcuk trying one of the others? -
Just found this on eBay!
It does NOT specifically state it works in the 5720, but from the auction:
TIA! -
it might work... I forgot about the module connectors.
Look at the bottom pics on the ebay item, if it matches the bottom of the card in the 5720, then it should work.
You would just use the old fan/heatsink, rather than the fan/heatsink that comes with the card (which is meant for a D900T/K) -
It will fit (after changing the heatsink), but not work on a M570A.
It will give you some 4 screens in one, right from the bootscreen.
I got one of those by accident, when i ordered a 7800GTX for my M570a some time back. -
Prema, why don't you think it will work with the M570A? I am pretty sure it will fit physically if I remove the heatsink. The 6800 Go fit in there with the heatsink but it was like Prima said, I got the 4 split screens from bootup. I already have a 7800 GO GTX so my question would be if there is any difference in my card vs the one listed on eBay?
-
I got exactly the one listed on ebay even directly from a clevo reseller meant for the clevo d900t model.
This 7800 gtx model has physically some chips placed differently on its board one chip even was missing, compared to the real m570a model, that i got later on.
The heatsink fitted perfectly, but it gave allways a 4in1 screen.
Just want to keep you from wasting money again on it.
P.S: I have trouble with my M570a motherboard, after a failed h8 kbc flash ( click) and may end up selling all the other parts incl. the 7800gtx -
Thanks for the info Prema. I just assumed that there would really be only one version of the 7800GTX but I guess I can believe so I guess I'm still in a market for a 7800GTX. I see another M570A on eBay that has a dead motherboard that I'll probably be keeping an eye on.
Sager 5720 - need help on 7800GTX replacement
